it really irks me that Emily Gilmore, the ice queen herself, did a fantastic job at making Dean feel welcome and comfortable despite her feelings, yet Richard could not even be so much as polite to the boy. I hate it when people put themselves on an imaginary pedestal, thinking that they are SO much better than everyone else. Dean was only 16 here - it's not the end of the world if he doesn't know exactly what he wants to do for school or where he will be in 20 years yet. Hell, I didn't even know what university I would go to until I was in grade 12. Richard knew exactly what school he wanted to go to and what opera he would see at which opera house as early as 10 years old? Great. Excellent. Amazing. I don't exactly expect much less from a child born into wealth and opportunity - one who had the privilege of experiencing high culture and realistically envisioning a monumental life at such a young age. It doesn't matter what concerns you may have for Rory, or the fact that Dean is in your house eating your food - you DO NOT treat people like this.
I feel like Rory is being so innocent. Before you invite your boyfriend to your grandparents place or any family gathering, you need to see how well they might get along. Rory is aware of her grandparents. Did she really expect her grandparents to be nice to a guy she brings ? I feel like she's only book smart and not socially intelligent. Doesn't matter who your boyfriend is, before inviting your partner to your family gatherings, you need to fill the host/hostess on what this person is like and if it is ok to invite them. You don't know the temperament of people whose house you are visiting. They may be teddy bear sweet to you but not to your +1.
No, men have a knack for spotting other men who will waste the time of the women in their life. And he spotted Dean a mile away. A man with no ambition will latch on to a woman with ambition and then drag her down with them. Which Logan eventually did with Rory. And the reason Richard turned on Logan in the end and so disappointed that he handn’t spotted Logan earlier.
So..... Richard claims that Dean is holding Rory back the same night they celebrate her being the top student? Funny how overprotective feelings cloud your judgment huh.

I think part of the reason why Richard is behaving this way is because he fears that Rory will end up like lorelai and doesn't want her to miss out on all the opportunities
I think you are right. A lot of harshness comes from fear and trauma. We see less examples with Richard than Emily but I'm sure what happened with Lorelai hurt him too. They got a do over through Rory and Dean became an easy target.
@@boost-9689 it's so annoying though because what happened with Lorelai was due to her dating Christopher, a boy from a "suitable" background who they felt was appropriate for her. In the early seasons Dean and Rory's relationship was incredibly pure and he treated her so well and never got either of them involved in any trouble. But her grandparents, especially Richard, decided to ignore that and only focus on his common background and grades etc. Simply snobbish behaviour
This is why Rory turned out the way she did later on. She's been treated like she was some sort of miracle by her close ones for so long it left her unable to deal with any kind of criticism or failure in real life.
I don’t think so. Her dad basically abandoned her, his parents called her a mistake and refused to have anything to do with her, Lane’s mom kept giving her Bibles and waiting for her to turn into a wanton woman, the kids at Chilton didn’t like her until she was the only one who calm down Paris, the head of the school told her she was too cowardly. I feel like only Sookie, Babbet and Luke were her cheerleaders. Kirk & Michel only tolerated her for Lorelei’s sake. Even Lane’s band members didn’t really like Rory.

That’s because rich people mainly care about money and they know exactly that big money can‘t be made, it can only be inherited. For the millionaires Gilmores they wanted for to Rory marry upwards, for the billionaire Huntzbergers it would be marrying down.
You could even argue Logan was the one who held Rory back but in reality Rory held herself back she chose to steal a yacht 🛥️ none of her bfs or friends suggested it

You'll have to point out her rude and disrespectful behavior in this scene, because I can't see it.
This scene sent genuine chills down my spine and real proper anger into the pit of my stomach, the same way that it did when Rory was treated the way she was by the Huntzbergers. Classism, it would seem, is one of my triggers. And as someone who took years to figure out my plans and who has only recently decided to go into the service industry, this scene along with others where these families of old money demean service work, tradeswork, or any type of blue collar work as well as chastising a teenager for being unsure of his future… all of it, enrages me.
Not just huntzbergers, straub and francis hayden too. How they made lorelei feel like she should be ashamed of telling where she works. Such buttholes. It's not like Richard's behavior surprised me but that was just so wrong. I learned one thing in my teen and college years is that if you don't know someone, always meet them at public place. It's the safest space. If Richard attacked him like that in public space, Luke or someone would have stood up for him too. Rory is so stupid. She put him in a vulnerable situation where he had nobody from his side to back him up and stand up to Richard. Richard obviously would not let Rory talk back to him but he wouldn't have able to control if Luke or Patty came in Dean's defense. Dean was sheltered so he didn't anticipate Richard's behavior but I liked Jess because he let her know he wasn't comfortable with the idea of going to a stranger's house for dinner.
This is how Christopher should have spoken to his parents when they went after Rory when they first met her. Rory has more backbone at 16 than her father as a 32 year old man.
Right? No boy is good enough for their precious granddaughter, no matter how good he is to her, as long as he comes from a wealthy & well-connected family, like Christopher or Logan
They always kept Rory on a pedestal. That's what's wrong. Not just them but the whole stars hollow. You get all kinds of managers and you experience failure in certain stages of life but kids who are given high expectation without teaching them that "hey its a tough world out there and you need to realize you aren't the only one wanting to go to Harvard" can be detrimental. Rory was shocked to get a D in class and when she missed her test, she lost her cool and Lorelei on top of that was defending her instead of explaining "hey you gotta understand that its real world. If you don't get what you want, you gotta learn to deal with it or talk to the teacher to make up for it. " Everyone made her feel like she's some perfect Goddess. She's not. She's human and "to err is human".
If Richard was always smart enough since 10 years old with high standards then how was his daughter pregnant at 16? All that matters is being a good and polite person to everyone. Why don't snobs get that??
It's helicopter parenting and being involved in your kid's life in a positive way not in a domineering father sort of way. Dad gives guy advice saying " honey at this age boys are stupid and will walk out on you if you god forbid got pregnant or something. You need to watch your own back". These people were always so busy in their meetings and stuff, they probably weren't as warm with her
Because Richard was as thick as a brick. Nothing intelligent about that man. No sense of humour, money from his mommy, pompous, condescending and rude to a kid (Dean) for no reason. "Rory is going to Yale" Yeah, she's also going nowhere in her life at 30 smth. And stealing a yacht because she got criticised. Sleeping with married men. What a special kid that one. @@edikto33 And the weirdest part of this is that this was Dean's thing first. When they met they connected bc of his curiosity about her reading habits and they constantly talked about those things. And then they gave those attributes to Jess to make him seem more suitable.
I mean, I am not really team Dean, but considering how Rory's career ends up, maybe her marrying Dean right out of high school and then running the town newspaper, maybe working up to the Hartford paper, wouldn't have been the worst option for Rory. Rory or her kids could taken over the inn someday and I am sure that Lorelei, Emily, and even Richard would enjoy seeing their great/grandkids grow up right in front of them, Richard and Emily did regret that they didn't see more of Rory when she was a kid, maybe the family should have focused on going to college for the next generation, after Rory had raised an army of book worms
@@PhilospherDjPsychologist24 Rory never marrisd Dean right out of high school. They broke up during their high school years. Did you watch the show at all.
Allow me to differ , dean didnt get straight A's but still he has built a car at the age of 16 , with proper motivation and tutoring he could've persued a carrer in mechanics, engineering or similar fields
I really hate Richard in this scene. I don’t like how he talks to Dean. Richard was wrong for what he did that what no way to talk to Rory’s boyfriend like that.
Although I don’t blame Richard it was nice to see Rory get the exact treatment through Logan’s family. Dean was treated so horribly later on by Rory and she definitely had it coming
Yall being a little hard on Richard. As Lorelai said Richard got scared because a boy derailed his only daughter life and he didn't want that for his only grandchild.
But on the other hand, Christopher was from the "right sort of family" got good grades and probably at that point, even if he didn't, everyone assumed he was planning to go into his father's business. So, the questions Richard is asking aren't in any way indicative of whether or not Rory's life will get derailed.
What I find ironic is fast forward 20 years and Rory is the loser and Dean is the one who has a job and a family and basically figured his life out. Would have loved to see what Richard had to say about that...
The grandpa wasn’t wrong. Men have a knack for spotting other men who will waste the time of the women in their life. And he spotted Dean a mile away. A man with no ambition will latch on to a woman with ambition and then drag her down with them. Unfortunately Richard didn’t spot Logan in time. Logan was the one who had Rory out partying with him every night and wasting her life. That’s why Richard looked so defeated when talking to Lorelei that he had let Logan sweep through the cracks.
Richard backed Logan and criticized Dean for only one reason. Family background. Don't forget that Richard and Emily both loved Christopher and he had less ambition at a much older age than Dean here.
Dean is 16; a lot of teenagers don't know what they want to do. But later on, Dean gets married (after Lindsay) and has a successful job and a stable life. Whereas Rory is just a train wreck and has become perfectly fine with being both a cheater and a mistress.
@@katymvt Christopher lacked ambition but he was always willing to do what his parents and what Richard wanted him to do. So they didn’t think he would drag Lorelei down. As for Logan, they did like him for his money. Your granddaughter marries a billionaire’s son, you assume she’ll be set for life.
@@TimberlakeTigerGirl Yes, because Dean married two trad wives. I know Lindsey was one not sure about the second. But it seems like she was as well. Had he married a girl who was smarter, more ambitious than himself I doubt he would’ve done those things. He would’ve resented her and held her back.
Me and my best friend met a man like this lol. He tried to attack us but I said "sorry we're losers". So we basically started attacking him and asked if he had a bad childhood. Lol I love rich class people. Easy to make fu m of.
I can understand where Richard is coming from, and before you people start going off I am Team Dean all the way. I defend him in every thread that says he is the worst b/f. But I can understand how someone could feel when they see someone they love dating someone they feel isn't good enough for them. You're not doing it to be hurtful but you just want to make sure they're not setting themselves up for failure. But parents should always teach their kids how to handle moments like this.
I actually think (with the exception of Richard, of course) that everyone handled the situation as well as they could have. Dean respectfully and politely answered all the questions. A lot of teenagers, and even older people, would have gotten mad and yelled, or walked out. Dean actually had quite a bit of grace in this scene. Lorelai kept trying to bring the attention to her. Emily was really very polite to dean, especially considering the fact that she felt the same as Richard, and tried to change the subject. And Rory stood up for him, very forcefully for Rory, without, IMO, crossing a line.
No, he is shit. If he was so smart and respectful like he thinks he is, he wouldn't butt his nose in what doesn't include him. Or judge people he doesn't even know. I hate such narcissistic people who would invite a guest then treat him this way even though he's nice. The grandfather is shameless and his behavior is disgusting
I understand that, but he deserved respect, always and at the dinner table. He's not a bad guy. Grandpa could have spoken to Rory privately, just in case. It's interesting how I received your message today, one year after my comment, following a long conversation with a friend about a similar situation in Sweden. In Sweden, if you fall in love with someone who is not as wealthy as you and is not Swedish, there is no socially acceptable way for you to have a stable or public relationship with them. People often meet secretly in other cities or even countries and cannot get married. That's why they teach you to only associate with people who share your background, nationality, and income.
Yes Richard was a snob in this scene but I think Dean is also at fault here. Who wouldn’t expect to have to talk about yourself and your future when meeting your girlfriends family. It’s pretty common that these types of things come up. So knowing what you want to do in life or at least getting a good story instead of saying I don’t know half the time would be a good thing to have prepared. Can you blame Richard for wanting someone with ambition for his granddaughter.

Can't disagree there.
He didn't have to be mean. And he acted like Rory dad instead of grandpa. I would of told my grandpa if he acted like a jackass
Emily in this one tho. 🖤
In his defense, he was really the only father figure to interrogate dean
I mean, I am not really team Dean, but considering how Rory's career ends up, maybe her marrying Dean right out of high school and then running the town newspaper, maybe working up to the Hartford paper, wouldn't have been the worst option for Rory. Rory or her kids could taken over the inn someday and I am sure that Lorelei, Emily, and even Richard would enjoy seeing their great/grandkids grow up right in front of them, Richard and Emily did regret that they didn't see more of Rory when she was a kid, maybe the family should have focused on going to college for the next generation, after Rory had raised an army of book worms
no I don't agree.

I'm just thinking, 'Why do they still have food on their plates when they said they were done?'
They treated Dean the same way Logan’s family treated her afterwards
Lorelei- “That’s because you were always picked last in Dodgeball”
Poor Dean :c
*Poor Sam*
History repeats itself when rory is not good enough
Dean plans to go to Stanford & study law
The book was left there.
Lorelai probably grabbed it on her way out.
I Love Gilmore Girls 💜❤️♥️❤️💜♥️❤️💜♥️❤️💜
Not Richard's finest moment😢
@@katymvt Exactly. That’s also part of the reason he liked Logan as well
Interesting how when Richard is tough Emily has such Grace and when Emily is rude Richard has such Grace
@@joanclayton5212 Or he grew out of that and got over it.
The last line🤣🤣🤣🤣
Me and my best friend met a man like this lol. He tried to attack us but I said "sorry we're losers". So we basically started attacking him and asked if he had a bad childhood. Lol I love rich class people. Easy to make fu m of.
And Emily as well here Treating poor Dean too!
She told Richard not to grill him and tried to distract him by getting the book. She didnt' do anything bad to Dean until years later.
This was so mean and STUCK up of Richard
"Rory is special"
Why? Because she can memorise 💩?
Nothing special about this chick. Nothing.
The Chinese are scared of this video
Que capítulo es?
0:11 excuse me?
Richard is usually nice I was very surprised at his behavior here.
do not talk to your grandpa rory
Don't you mean don't talk to your grandpa like that. You saying it the other way is telling her she can't ever talk to her grandpa.
Isn't a good and responsible guy someone to be respected in the US?
Ideally yes, but a lot of people will judge based on superficial reasons like wealth.
@@auroradeja-vu8763 Your point? That's a long comment.
maybe
Yes Richard was a snob in this scene but I think Dean is also at fault here. Who wouldn’t expect to have to talk about yourself and your future when meeting your girlfriends family. It’s pretty common that these types of things come up. So knowing what you want to do in life or at least getting a good story instead of saying I don’t know half the time would be a good thing to have prepared. Can you blame Richard for wanting someone with ambition for his granddaughter.
He's 16; most teenagers don't know what they want to do in life.
Cute
