Except for housewives. Apparently we are fine to return to full active duty at 2 months. Because people who haven't had knee surgery, have no clue, what we are going through.

I wonder if he’d be saying all that if he actually had a total knee replacement…. He makes it sound sooooo easy! Everyday is a challenge, I don’t think anyone wants not to succeed. The realism is that everyone is different and you do what your body allows at that time… it’s work in progress…..

I agree. It is foolish to make people think everything is always honkey dorey for everyone...I am 61...10 weeks post op with 2nd tkr...and I flex at 117...its stiff and it swells everyday...I don't squat or kneel....
And yet I am so happy to be pain free...and I drive and I walk....what more can you ask for????

Starting to feel a tad better, I am retired. I still am sleep deprived…my knee bends and extends well, stairs going down bother me a bit. I have physio twice a week. It has been way too cold to swim lately and the weather has not been kind to my poor knee.

Had tkr 12 weeks ago. My insurance only covered 6 weeks of pt. Can’t afford to go to the gym or get a personal trainer & can’t afford to join a swimming pool. Had to go back to my full time job after 6 weeks & this is now 12 weeks & my knee is stiff & can’t straighten leg & still is uncomfortable at night when trying to sleep

Not a Knee replacement - I had a Quad Tendon Rupture Feb-2022. I have had four surgeries - all of which have failed to at least some extent, and a major arthro cleanout due to a Staph infection. I am well over 70. The first two surgeries failed completely. The last one with a Graft and anchors has a small tear but appears to be holding. They held me from PT for two months to allow some healing on that last one. The staph infection required 13 4 liter bags of cleanout fluid to clear and 6 weeks of IV antibiotic infusions so I am WAY behind in my recovery. I have been told that I might not achieve 90 degree Flexion but I am close to 100 and might get to 110 this coming month. Funny that I never really had any pain (Always had a high pain tolerance) and never needed the Narcotic Pain relievers but take Ibuprofen as an anti- inflammatory. My swelling is now finally starting to diminish after more than a year and I can drive a car but not my tractor. I am finally able to actually walk reasonably well although there is some discomfort from the swelling still. I still take steps one at a time though. They have deliberately been careful with my PT due to the tear since the DR says there is no possibility of another operation. Progress therefore has been slow but I have progressed more than they thought I would. I am back to regular workouts in addition to my PT but miss squating - can only us a Leg Press so far.

This doctor makes it sound easy im at 7weeks and do physio twice a day, i britain you get to go to physio once a fornight and pay a fortune for a personal trainer, off canes after 5 weeks and manage stairs okay, but still get days when i feel im going backwards stiffness and still sore at times frustrated and depressed at times

I think this is in general advice. I am 2 months into my second TKR and have found compared to my first that this time is much easier. I'm at 110 flexion after 5 weeks, still some swelling and pain. Short walks with no aides. But you just got to keep going every day keep at it work through the pain ice and cryocuff help a lot. Anti inflamatories. Each person will have different response and progress. Do the best you can. Good luck to all of you.

I had bilateral TKR 65 days ago . There isn't any pain . I go for walk every morning for about 1 km and do recumbent bike ride for 8 minutes in evening besides twice a day isometric exercises at my own . The swelling is 90% gone and stiffness too is much less . I am 70 years of age. I don't yet drive a car and can climb stairs or bend comfortably. But , to be not overdoing , I am gradually but progressively inching towards full recovery after 90 days . I hope so .

I'm 6 weeks Post Op. At 3 weeks I had 70 degrees flexion from subacute rehabilitation. Checked out and went to my Physical Therapist. He freaked out and said I should be much further along saying I was heading towards a manipulation (MUA). He scared me so I intensified my exercises. Was in the gym daily, home exercises, and PT thrice weekly. Now after six week my Flexion today was 130 degrees and zero degree straight. So now I'm working on knee and quad strengthening. Yes it was excruciating painful but I committed to the goals. Now mostly achieved. It can be done but ya just gotta work harder and fight through the pain.

Well, well well you are the success story that I would like to be. Not sure how you work through the pain anymore than I have. I’ve been in physical therapy since the day after surgery three weeks in my house and four weeks at the PT center so here I am at seven weeks and only at 80° was 55° the day after surgery I have the MUA scheduled for the end of the month and yes, it is scary but I see no other way. I’ve been working so hard every day if I push any harder, it feels like something is going to snap. Maybe I have a low pain tolerance but the painkillers don’t work for me and I can only do so much. Hopefully I will have good news to report soon.

I just finished month 2. I'm moving around, doing exercises daily, PT 3X a week. I am experiencing a LOT of swelling in the joint only, so it has NOT been an easy go of it. I am 60 years old, 145 lbs, in good physical shape. I think this doctor is doing patients a disservice with this advice. I am not happy with the amount of swelling I can't seem to get rid of (because every time I exercise it comes back with a vengeance). I have to get back to work next week on a reduced schedule...there isn't enough time to exercise, ice and elevate! I have two friends who had far worse trouble than I am now, and I'm sure others out there comparing their situation to what he says we should be doing may be disappointed. Don't be. And by the way, my PT told me 120-125 would be perfectly acceptable for flexion.

    • @tomk3928
      @tomk3928 4 года назад +9

I agree with you. I'm nine weeks out from my total knee replacement and I am at 120 degree knee flexion. I have been told this is perfectly acceptable. I also have swelling after exercising and have been told by my every member of my physical therapy team that if it swells, cut back on the exercise. I have done that (only exercising my knees every other day) and it has helped quite a bit. I rest, elevate, compress and ice the knee in the morning before work and again after work for about twenty-five minutes. My team also told me that the swelling is normal due to the trauma of the surgery to the soft tissue and it may take up to a year to stop. Additionally, the swelling makes it difficult to attain the higher degrees of flexion, so my ROM may increase as the swelling decreases. Good luck!

I am at 8 weeks and don’t have swelling but I have intense stiffness even after sitting for only 20 minutes which makes me dread standing up, and I still have pain and that tight feeling around my knee so walking is very sore. I also have very bad pain on my thigh and hamstring ever since the surgery. But my doctor fobbed me off because I have full range of motion with excellent flexion (127) and very good extension. But I don’t consider it a success if I am in more pain than I was pre-surgery.

I am 67, in great health & doing my exercises every day religiously. I do still have some swelling. I seem to be stuck at 110 degrees. That’s unacceptable to me. Is there a point where I will just be unable to get any more flexion than that? Or is there hope for more bend…it’s very frustrating to me. I am retired, but back to doing all of my normal every day activities, just stuck at 110

The only thing I don't like is the strange sensation at lower portion of knee where some of the nerves and muscles are healing. But it's not pain just a different feeling from normal. But I believe this too will pass with time

If you haven't already done so, you should contact your orthopedic surgeon and see what he/she says.

This is not 100% correct. I’ve had two knee replacements. (Last one 3 months ago) I agree that this works for most people, but my body has not adjusted to the foreign object that is in my body. It’s still sensitive to the touch and I’m dealing with a lot of pain. I would recommend that you talk to your physician and not over do it. I’m 42 years old and there is a huge difference when you have a knee replacement at 40 vice 60. Also, I weigh 270lbs so my knee is taking a huge load everyday(former football player) I’ve started going to the gym doing low weight high reps, but I stopped due to pain, will wait till next month to try again. Remember, everyone is different and if you have multiple ailments like back and ankle problems, going in blindly will do more harm than good

  • @bohickity

No one can tell you what a total knee replacement is like, you have to experience it yourself. My problem is the inadequate pain management of early discharged patients. You should stay at least two days for pain management. Oxycodone by mouth doesn’t compare to IV narcotics. This is the third most painful surgery out there, don’t sugar coat it. It’s a long painful recovery, but it beats sitting on the couch the rest of your life.
