Catch and Cook Monkeyface Eel - Lowtide foraging

  • I go poke poling along the Northern California coast during an extremely low tide (-1.71 ft) and explore the tide pools. I catch a monkeyface eel with a poke pole, and some rock crab by hand which I cook up for my lunch. There were some surprises along the way as well!

    I appreciate the comments regarding the safety of the crabs in which a single claw was harvested. The crabs are probably at a disadvantage, but I figure it gives them a chance to live rather than harvesting the entire crab and killing them, and that's a 0% chance of living. Here's a video of crabs that routinely amputate their own claws after injury. If it was completely detrimental to their health, I don't think they would have evolved to do this on themselves. It seems that having a "bad claw" is more disadvantageous to them (and hence why they amputate their claw) than regrowing a new one. Check it out: • Crab amputates his own...

      I want to try them eggs, there's plenty of rock crab, I bet he just put it back because the pussies in the comment section, or the demonic acid, but whatever I wanted to know what them shits taste like

      @@dirkschmitz7884 People do it with stone crabs all the time. They are able to grow them back. It is more sustainable than taking the whole rock crab.

    It's not legal to remove claws from rock crabs in California; you have to take the whole crab. I don't personally have a problem with it, but that's the law.

    Picking up where fisherman's life left off. He don't do shore videos anymore I liked those 2. I like the idea of just taking the claws. They grow back and the crab can live and keep spawning.

      I beg the difference, they'll starve to death without claws, usually people take one, so that they can defend & pinch off food to eat, if you take both claws, most likely they'll die. I'm sure it takes more than a few months to grow back even a small claw.

    • @josephsaeteurn9158
      @josephsaeteurn9158 6 лет назад +6

      if i do decide to not keep the crabs, i'll take one side off just like you stated. they need to eat and defend too. imagine if we don't have arms.. pretty hard to eat food.

      I looked it up and even taking one claw results in about a 30% mortality rate within 24 hours of declawing.

    Great video! Just a suggestion based on my experience. I skin eel (and Eel Tail Catfish [an Australian Native if I recall correctly]) before I gut them. Once the skin is off, no more slime issues. I like to use ocean water with some added salt when I cook crab over here. Looks like good tucker, mate.

The crab Cooker restaurant down the Newport Peninsula has always been good. Good Luck

    I’m following all your new videos but diving into the older ones too. This is a great one. I just was poke poling last Saturday with my wife, daughter (and Danny) on the HMB south jetty where we saw Chensi with his dogs digging for clams. We got a small MF PB and a tiny giant reef fish and only some tiny rock crabs. Next time we’ll go more south down the coast where less people and hopefully get some bigger game. 😁

    the rock crabs you caught is actually the brown rock crab (or Pacific rock crab), which is Romaleon antennarius. Also the small sea anemones are not starburst, they're aggregating anemones (Anthopleura elegantisma). I know this is dumb, but it's illegal to harvest the claws (because there's no way to determine the size). I guess if you eat it all and get rid of the crab, then you're all good, but since you're making a vid, gotta be careful ;) I still liked the vid, just want to help you out.

    Next time use a towel , it’ll help with the eel , also can be use to wipe your hands from touching fish too.

    Also... you should take a look at fisherman's knots. Not because I only think your knots are crap... but only because I know that you don't know the difference. So I'm recommending you go download a free knots app, or knots book. Basically there are two kinds or generally accepted areas of knots, there's sailing, and lines and so forth, and there is every other knot that's actually got a specific use and function depending on the type of knot, it's the same in sailing. There's also several specialties with in knot tying, ex Fishing knots, climbing knots, knots for lumber, knots for torture, knots for knots for knots for something. So look them up, then pick at least 3 to 4 knots that you know you have a good idea that you will be needing or using them.
