    I have my car in shop right now. They were going to do timing chain on it, but they are checking this first. Here’s what’s been going on. Every once in a while it would throw a light. I’d shut it off then it would be fine. While light was on it would run rough. Well here lately on cold start it would have high rpms and be bouncing from 1100 to 1400 cutting in and out. Once warm it would idle at 600 with a feel of a mis fire. So I cleaned throttle body. Seemed to get worse. When running down the road, sometimes it would lurch. This has been going on for a good 6 months. Would changing the actuator fix any of that. Should I have just replaced the throttle body? Fantastic video! Its interesting how just the p0017 code was thrown despite other codes available for actuation on other cam banks potentially being mismatched (p0116 etc..) remained intact? I've got a feeling many mechanics have been fooled by this code and an improper expensive repair protocol was followed. Ouch ! Does this scenario require a replacement crankshaft? More comprehensive than my mechanic offered,👍🏽 who's hated GM since the bailout. He's gonna have to do until I find more competent service. Have p0017 '08 3.6, 112k mile, Outlook which has cleared the p0017 after several hours of highway. But code returns on typical 5 miles per day driving. Runs great otherwise, but because of the code, can't use the keyless start. Two questions; will the loose reluctor ring be indicative of my stated problem? Working on an 09 malibu 3.6l P0017. Came in with a crank no start complaint. After some cranking got it to start but runs rough, and P0017. Found the TSB on the reluctor and this video. Checked counters as you show and same results you got, leaning towards reluctor. Pull CKP and look at reluctor with borescope, bar engine over to find edge of counterweight and reluctor gap is approximately 3 1/2 teeth as described by tsb, not the reluctor. Further scanner analysis shows the exh cmp variance 10 to 51 degrees while cranking and no start, continued attempts variance goes to 0 and car starts. Speculating that vvt actuator is bad and not locking at home/park. If this is the case why is the ckp active counter all over the place?

    • @RustBeltAuto
      @RustBeltAuto  9 месяцев назад

      My guess is you have more than one issue. Cmp sensors usually tell the pcm when to fire spark, and time injectors on most cars. Ckp just finds tdc usually for timing. Ckp should not cause a no start on most cars. The vehicle i worked on started, and drove fine.

On idle i can see light fluctuate nothing severe. Oil is replaced every 5000 miles but i have to watch for oil level and was adding up to 1 quart before i have to change oil . There is oil leak on timing cover nothing major. I try to ad lucas oil stop leak did not even use half of 1 quart and that is after some time get P0017 and P0008 code. You think it is timing chain? And how long i can drive before it get worse? All start after acadia was sitting for some time like 3-4 weeks and first it did not want to start starter problem, replace starter and have hard time to start i have to use starter fluid and after that no problem with start. It takes the values it has from other sensors, and "guesses". There are a few reasons why it can actually run. For instance, a DFI waste burn doesn't really "need" to know TDC on #1. Most of the times just dirty screens in VVT solenoids due to lack of maintenance. People believe oil producers and keep the oil in the engine for 15000 miles. On an engine that burns oil, and pretty much all GDI engines do by the time you do oil change you don't have enough oil in your engine and becomes too thick and dirty which will clog those screens and prevent a proper oil flow to the sprockets and as a result proper advance or retarding of the camshafts as comanded. Reluctor moving on the camshaft? Really?

      @@RustBeltAuto I meant crankshaft. Not necessarily VVT is off at idle especially on cold start in newer engines without EGR valve use VVT to reduce startup emissions and speed up de warmup of engine and cats. You have valve overlap which is done by VVT right of the bat.

      @Cristi N okay. And how does VVT operation determine ckp sensor function?

    • @cristinastor
      @cristinastor Год назад

      I've seen bad readings of ABS sensors because of metal shavings stuck to them, they are magnetic after all. Or corosion in the contact points of the plug to the sensors. I find it hard to believe a reluctor ring that is hard pressed on the cranckshaft has slipped without anything to impede it's rotational movement along with the crankshaft. They say you could verify the reluctor ring is out of position through the cranckshaft position sensor. Anyways without actually verifing that is what happened you cannot absolutely and without doubt diagnose this a case of crancksaft reluctor ring slipped out of position. Just my 2 cents

    • @RustBeltAuto
      @RustBeltAuto  Год назад

      @Cristi N agreed. However it is rather common for this to happen on these engines. Many people are replacing the ckp sensors on these to no avail. You need to read codes, and freeze frame data in order to know how to diagnose it. Timing chains on these are a common failure. I cannot answer your questions, because you create more of them out of nothing.
