- With research suggesting only 24% of care homes in the UK provide rooms for couples, despite evidence suggesting companionship is a key part in living a longer, happier life, many face difficult conversations with their partners about what to do when one falls too ill to stay at home. Kaye thinks we’re getting better at having difficult conversations about death but we don’t talk about the chapter beforehand whilst Denise admits that she only thought about care when she had the privilege of caring for her Dad in his own home.

I look after my mum full time and live with her along with my brother and it is so rewarding she lights up our world and after 5 strokes and a heart attack she is the strongest person I know and once in a while I feel so guilty for just wanting an hour or 2 on my own to do stuff that I love but I wouldn't give it up ever
You are an amazing person. I don’t see the point in taking your loved one to care home. Our parents sacrificed so much and looked after us and I would love to do the same thing for them. You will be rewarded so much.

@@distorbia20 with respect, you're missing the point... not everyone can care for their parent. I've worked in loads of care homes where the families have tried to cope mentally and physically and financially to the point of themselves becoming poorly. If you can't see the point, open your eyes and ears wider.

I'm a 40 year old person. I get private paid carer that sees me in my home. Sadly, it isn't cheap to have a carer these days. Plus, it's hard to get carers these days. Sadly, social care and community services are under funded. Remember, it's not just the elderly that need home care support or residential care support.
All care homes should be very good in the services it provides, unfortunately, that is rarely the case.

I worked in a care home about 22 years ago that had couples rooms. We had 2 couples with us.
My mum is 73 and in reasonable health apart from arthritis in her hip which is now becoming debilitating I will 100% move in and look after her if the time comes. I think you are wonderful.
My mother and stepfather lived in a home together, but had separate rooms. Unfortunately, they bickered quite a lot and naturally caused problems to the staff within in the residential home, sadly, my stepfather was moved to another home. If couples get on really well and the facilities are good, then it would be an excellent idea.

Children should care for their parents
Children should be able to live their lives. I wouldn't want my kids to have to look after me.
It can be too much when you’ve got a full time job and a family of your own.
