Wireworld Aurora 7, Electra 7, and Silver Electra 7 power cords, • Time to think about up...
My wife woke up this morning and said “I’m nervous. I heard Steve Guttenberg’s voice last night on your phone, and I’m afraid you’re going to buy something. I don’t like it when you watch his videos.” She’s never even seen him, but he strikes fear in her soul. Haha!
Hahaaa, that's hilarious, mine does the exact same thing but at least she has watched a vid or 2.
I must say, Steve is very convincing, and most of the time he’s right!
My wife also recognises his voice now. I wear headphones now
Do, do, do. Do-do. Do.
My wife and I both work, so if I buy something it’s my own doing, she can only shake her head in disappointment.
Greatings from Germany, great review! I think this describes the current Canton sound quite well! Had several pairs over the years. Currently still operating Vento 890.2 in my living room and Vento 826 with two SVS SB 1000 in my listening room, powered with two IOTAVX PA3 and a Marantz NR1710 as pre-amp. Great combination!
For whatever reason Cantons here in Germany are not so highly regarded by audiophiles. Probably they are just not exotic enough. But in the end they offer quite a lot value for the money. Great sound and the build quality and finish is outstanding.
Well Nubert is nothing I would consider buying.... Tastes differ.
I gotta say Steve, with all due respect to your deep knowledge and kindness in doing these videos, you won the award for the most hifi adjectives possible in one review.
I've heard these speakers and they are fantastic IMO. Crazy, crazy levels of clarity and I did not get a hint of listening fatigue. Pretty special. One of the tracks I listened to was a choir in a cathedral. I could clearly hear the absolute size of the cathedral. Not just that they were in some amorphous cathedral. Focusing in on the choir I could clearly hear the individual rows of singers. My mind was completely blown. Definitely give these a listen if you can.
How is it with movies?
@@fraddi Simply excellent. I can hear details in sound from movies that I’ve seen multiple times. They’re beautiful speakers.
I am very content with my Canton Reference 9.2 DC standmounts. Wonderful speakers, that I can enjoy all day without listener fatigue. Welcome back to the US, Canton.
Finally a canton review. Nobody reviews speakers from this brand
I always wondered why no one talks about/ reviews Canton.
I have a pair of 809s and they are great I have to say
Good point! Especially regarding that is 3rd European producer of speakers by DALI, Dynaudio, B&W, Focal...
My dad would love your profile pic.
They also have really nice looking online exclusive speakers which might be good value per money because they skip the cost for the dealer and distributor
I have the top of the line towers in the Canton Vento Series, the 896.2 which have the same midwoofer and tweeter as these stand mounts but also 2 8" woofers and I love them. I bought them basically blind because there aren't many reviews of Canton products but after debateing for a few month I decided to pull the trigger and have been very pleased since.
Wasn't aware of Canton not being present in USA/Canada. Thought that lack of (american) reviews is due to lack of interest in that brand. Glad to hear, that more Canton reviews are coming in the future...
Excellent review. I purchased the Vento 896.2 towers this past summer and my listening experience is exactly what you describe.
Curious if you listened to the 886? I like the smaller Vento's and am thinking of pulling the trigger on these in cherry.
@@sdemosi I have not listened to the 886, but I have the cherry finish on my speakers and love the look. I am using a pair of Schiit Vidars and the Freya+ preamp in balanced configuration along the an Ares II DAC. This set up pairs well with the Ventos.
I have been watching your blogs for a way over a year now and I think and you’re so endearing when you speak to your audience I think that all you need to do buy a top hat and black cane and do a soft shoe. What Charisma!
Thank you for pointing out the wonderful craftsmanship and sound of this not so well known brand.... I absolutely love Canton speakers. They are extremely detailed and very accurate. I wish they had a factory here in the US, but for now.... We will just have to keep importing these wonderful speakers, totally worth it.
I envy your ability to recognize the fine details deference between systems. Cheers
Thanks Steve another great review, I'm always enthused by your enthusiasm 😁
This is the most utilitarian and accurate review you have done of a speaker IMHO, well done Steve.
Yes!!! You’ve done a great job conveying the “Canton sound”
Big Canton fan here, having owned many models - mainly 90’s era, including the (then) flagship Ergo 120DC.
I just inherited one of my old systems that had been sitting in a bedroom at my parent’s house.
- Canton Ergo 100DC in walnut, mint condition
- ‘94 Yamaha CX-1 preamplifier
- Yamaha MX-1 Power amp
My beloved Zu Druid IV-13’s are now for sale. 😂
Canton is back in the house.
I look forward to seeing reviews of Canton’s new Reference line
Pretty speaker. Some of the better speakers on the market. Very good description from Steve, that's exactly how I also would describe Canton generally.
I've been using Canton CD 360 F speakers for L/C/R since 2008 and have always been completely happy with them. Solid as a rock and crystal clear sound.
At last, a Canton speaker review! After many various good quality speakers, have for the last year had the Canton K8. In my room they sound the best of the lot.
last 10 years with Canton. Absolut transparency that sometimes asks for a soul, totally agree on that.
It’s great when your enthusiasm punches through.
I own the Canton Ergo 690 for the last 20 years. They are great speakers with strong bass but otherwise very clear and defined sounds without any boominess. Driven by a NAD C 328 now and before a Denon unit.
Canton was my very first purchase in my long, but joyous, journey down this audiophile path. They were the Canton CT 1000's in solid walnut finish purchased at Dave Wasserman's first store in lower Manhattan in the mid 1980's. They were an aggressive speaker that had finesse! Sadly, they met their demise during a trip back to Canton, USA in 1990 to fix two fried titanium tweeters. Canton graciously replaced the damaged speakers with a pair of Karat 60's with an experimental (one off) prototype cabinet design. I still own these speakers and will most likely donate them to Canton, Germany where they house their museum; displaying all of their models throughout the history of Canton...
Good story!
Steve - Thanks for reviewing a Canton. Growing up in the Minneapolis area, I can find a number of old pairs of Cantons, they used to be distributed out of here. Like you said, for years they have been gone, and while you could purchase them, there was certainly no place to listen to them. That should now change. I would have liked to hear to review some of the floorstanders!
Thanks again, for justifying my purchase of the Ref 9.2s last year. :)
Yes!!!!!!! Steve, you made my day! Great review! My favorite speaker manufacturer. I own the 890.2 towers and Reference 9.2 standmount. So so glorious top to bottom. Not to correct you....but Canton uses an aluminum dome tweeter with a ceramic coating. Dont forget about their special folded surround too. Which they call DC.....more or less no bass distortion no matter how loud or deep you go. Finally Canton gets the recognition they deserve. Thanks Steve:)
836.2, at least according to the Canton website, has "Keramik" dome tweeter. Reference 9.2 is "Aluminium Oxyd Keramik". Are they really the same?
@@2by3 I'm willing to bet it's just like my 890.2's...aluminum dome with a ceramic coating. Would be extremely difficult to create an all ceramic dome. Dont think it would be acoustically practical either. I emailed Canton. I'll fill you in once they reply.
@@ryanschipp8513 thanks, keep us please updated.
@@2by3 will do!
@@ryanschipp8513 Canton ever get back to you?
Listening to combinations of equipment is why live auditions in an audio salon can be quite revealing in a single sitting.
It's just too bad there are very few of those left....I miss those days. Thankfully I still have one nearby that I can drop in and "play around" for an hour.
Glad to see Canton making waves. They had an ad in the latest Stereophile too. They've been under the radar way too long.
Thanks Steve - always love how you express the way various albums come through the equipment you're reviewing - - after all, in the end, it is about the music. It's like getting a double "whammy" - - even if I'm not in the market for what you happen to be reviewing, although it doesn't matter to me whether or not I'm a "buyer" because it's fun to keep up with what's going on which your channel is so excellent at, but anyway, t's not uncommon for me to go on a "hunt" for some of the music you present along the way.
When I was in grad school a friend had some big ass Canton 12" or 15" floorstanders on a NAD 3020 and an obscene amount of LPs strewn across EVERY room in his New York apartment, lol.
Big, bold sound. Pretty impressive back then!
I truly love your enthusiasm and your approach to really giving a comprehensive review of these Canton speakers. The swapping of components to tweak the speakers capabilities is always welcome and I'm sure the funnest part since you can actually hear the differences in tonality, bass response, etc. But I must confess that your video most of all makes me yearn to be in an audio store listening for myself.
Still running canton plus s and plus c combo for about 30+ years now. These things are made to last and more importantly sound amazing. Great to see they're still in the industry!
So nice, me too! Since 26 years. Marvellous Set!
Hi Steve, I feel that bass is overlooked, if not all out ignored by a lot of recording artists and producers and engineers. I have Magnepan 1.7i and REL Tzero subs with McIntosh front end. I played some Carly Simon tracks this morning on vinyl and was blown away by
The sound of the studio, and the drums on“ that’s the way I’ve always heard it should be” and several other tracks. More times than not recordings don’t let you hear the drums, you only get the beat, but on really good recordings not only do you hear the drums but you can hear the decay of the skin as it ceases to vibrate right before the next hit comes, that’s what keeps me coming back for more.
System matching is the art of building true audiophile system... must be heard to understand and admire.... most folks do not do that and will never know what their system could sound like after good equipement matching
Yep. Those W-surrounds combined with Cantons overly damped cabinets make for a very stubbornly stiffened, box-free sound. If you remove some stuffing behind the midrange and also remove the bass sponge in its downfiring port, you can get a more lively, reverberating speaker.
More than thirty years ago I bought a pair of Canton CT 80 floorstanding speakers, sold them three years ago and they still went flawlessly.
First of all, the Sun Valley Drive comment is hilarious. Secondly, the Loki EQ works wonders on RUclips Videos!
Hi Steve - interesting unit. It looks remarkably like the Atohm GT1 series, which I strongly recommend to anyone who can find one. These are surprising. Greetings to one and All.
Subbed to this channel. Listening with the old Canton LE 9's paired with the very rare and superb Tandberg Studio Monitors from the 70s through a Pioneer VSX-AX3. As pure reference speakers, The Tandberg's are way better of course but the Cantons supplement very well. As a musician, I never felt the urge to change this antique trio until now as I'm retired. As for the Canton's ... they do 100€ secondhand here in Europe due to audio fanatics who believe that newer is better. 4 woofers, two midrange speakers and two tweeters, etc giving away for 100€ in total??? I'm also on the brink to part with the Tandbergs in exchange for something small with Bluetooth but it feels like parting from your beloved wife who's gonna be missed for sure. Damn... a hard choice.
Bought a pair of 3.2 DC new in for around 4k shipped. Thomas had a great review on these, also a Stereophile Class A rated Tower. You won't find them for those prices anymore unless you go used, but I would highly recommend them..
I'm considering a pair of 3.2 DC used for $4.5k. Do you still love your?
@@paulgyro yes. they are extremely forgiving of placement. Incredible with just about any genera of music .
@@Merlin-wo1kj awesome thanks, where did you get such a good deal on them?
@@paulgyro Accessories 4 less... They had a direct contract with Canton for a few years. This was before Canton had any significant US dealer presence.
7:22 Steve: "I wanted to push the pedal to the metal"
Me: oh boy, oh boy, The Audiophiliac listens to metal. What did he play, Opeth? TOOL? Devin Townsend? Oceans of Slumber? Ayreon?
Steve: pulls out a reggae/dub album
Me: oh... I'll crawl back under my rock.
You probably won't find very many audiophiles reviewing metal music to determine the quality of audio components........ Sorry bro
And that is a damned shame....😔
It is a shame, because just like all genres ... there's examples good and bad.
There's poor quality, low clarity, slammed up against the limiters metal.
And there's quality, high clarity, open and articulate, well executed, and powerfully dynamic metal recordings.
They are beautiful and the attention to detail is impressive, talking about the 809ds I have ❤️
Us Canton owners might actually get some respect in the US now :-)
thanks for the Brian Eno suggestion....big fan of his but never heard of this recording. Sounds great even on my moderate system.
I have seen their products at good prices at accessories for less but I never had a chance to listen to them or hear/read a competent review.
Thanks Steve!
But are they an authorized dealer? That place has a poor BBB rating too if you have any troubles with your purchase.
@@FelixtheMetalcatIf price is 70% off new like product it maybe worth the risk
@@FelixtheMetalcat I bought some Polk refurb speakers there and came in factory packaged in like new condition.... My brohter got some Focal Arias and these were like new in fact boxes .
Arias were 599uad a pair what is more than half off....Polk S20s were 179usd a pair what also is 50% off
Same question applies, are they an authorized dealer? You bought refurbed or 2ndary stock....I looked at the site, and using Focal, a brand I know very well, they dont have anything Focal puts out that is part of their best product line for home stereo systems. I saw no Chorus, no Aria none of the new Chora line, which leads me to believe that this is an operation selling discontinued or 2ndary stock. Either way, it's your money, I don't care. No convincing on the planet would ever coax me to spend my money there. I want first rate products and service and could care less about "taking a chance" to save money. I am in this hobby to spend my money and enjoy music and grade A products, not take risks for the sake of chincing a few dollars.
I have an old small Canton Plus S. It sounds ok for it’s size - the proverbial description. Let me put it this way, the similarly sized RadioShack speakers sound a little better. The model reviewed is first class in appearance.
I love the ducks in the shelf!
Great episode. Makes me want to find a pair to audition. Ever consider reviewing Totem Tribe Tower? Another great little 2 way speaker made in house. Crazy good for it's size. Much different sound than what you describe from the Canton though.
accessories4less has been selling Canton for as long as I can remember (but not the complete line).
Perhaps not anymore as they may seek dealers to stick close to MSRP.
Looks like a4l has minimal inventory now.
@@hokifan1 I was told he can't get more at the previous prices he had. Oh well.
This is true! I got my vento 826.0 for $600 last year from them.
as usual I do really appreciate your review, hitting the nail as usual...but still have some tips if you accept suggestions...
Sly and Robbie "Language barrier" or "Nordub ( with Nils Petter Molvær), , for female vocals try Hector Zazou's " Chansons des mers froides" ( with contributions from Bjork, Värttina, Siouxsie, Suzanne Vega -with John Cale, Jane Siberry...).
And finally I do have a vinyl -the original version of "WalterCarlos'Clockwork Orange"
I am here for the music selections. ✌
That's good
Construction sounds similar to Vienna Acoustics. The wood cabinets, painting, crossovers are all made/done internally like Canton, but not the design materials used in the Canton drivers. Ceramic and Titanium is not the norm, for sure.
Not to correct Steve. But the tweeter they use is aluminum with a ceramic coating. I own two pairs of Canton. 890.2 and Reference 9.2. They are glorious sounding.
You forgot to mention the special woofer surrounds ! Have a second look to see what’s different !
13:46 Upriver. Upriver is what feeds into the speaker; downriver is what comes out of the speaker. But, excellent review as always!
Another great review, and an excellent statement. You got to make sure you are having fun! What’s the point if you are not, and that certain goes towards any product in a review.
Great review Steve 👍
There are many great sounding small speakers
I sold Canton 25 years ago in a boutique store... There were pretty bright then, although their little sub/sat system was the ultimate Bose AM5 killer...
I have the Vento 830´s and they´re a bit better than my LS50´s I sold a few years ago. In Europe the price is almost similar.
Hmm i got my 836.2 working on a axa35 and adi2 and its pretty good IMO. 😇
Looks like wharfedale Evo 4.2!!Multilayer speakers (different density) are also the wharfedale diamond series like the multi awarded 225's.
I love my Canton's!!
Hi Steve, great as usual!
I have a non-audiophiliac question, if I may ask.
Would an under $1000, all-in-one solution (stremer+amplifier, like Powernode 2021) be a good match for these Canton bookshelf speakers?
Any suggestion?
Kind regards
Forget audio ... Steve is the new Jesus .....
I got a pair of canton vento 809 dc and they are amazing

Keep it rocking Steve!
As Amir pointed out in his audiosciencereview video, unless you do a mono review of a speaker (and this against a benchmark speaker) you can't really decide how well it performs because stereo listening is deceptive when it comes to frequency balance.
What a serious contender for dream speaker 2021
Great review Steve!!
Most of the time I like my own music better with a good HIFI-system or by changing parts of the system. The other times I discover through the better HIFI-system or parts, that I appreciate more and more music that is not my own, so it becomes my own because of de better system.
I have an old Canton Plus S (take that Apple) in my shop, it sounds ok for it’s size - the most hated descriptive other than price comps. Let me put it this way, the similarly sized RadioShack speakers have more bass. The new one’s finish is first class.
I love the ducks on the shelf!
Are they Ducks 🦆 or Geese on the shelf Mr. Rabit ❓
That's absolutely no comparison to the Canton Vento, A or Reference line!
@@andreasheiden7122 I compared my Canton Plus S with my RadioShack. Both speakers are from the 80s. I commented on the Vento's finish not the sound.
Mr. & Mrs. Goose ? Your place looks clean and organized, finally, hmm. Very nice
all Dub produced by the Mad Professor is special
Canton speakers are on my radar since listening to your review. I hope to A / B test them against Sonus Faber speakers. It should be interesting. SF Sonetto III -vs- Canton Reference 8K.
I can get the Canton Vento 836.2 for as little as 720€\$ here (Germany / Retoure) atm. I _think_ they sound good. Wonder will they show up low quality recordings? (I often listen to older poorly recorded/mastered/remastered music)
I feel like this guy has similar taste as to what I consider good quality sound. Not everyone hears the same.
Nice to hear ! While browsing RUclips, I often come across Steve Guttenberg! What do you think of Dynavoice speakers? For example: Dynavoice Challenger M-105? Continue to ferret hearing!
As a bass player and listener. I hate thud bass. I want a deep bottom ( I play a 5 string), but I want it to have clarity and "growl" if you will. I always use round wound stainless steel strings. I want to hear that in a recording.
Steve,
How do the Canton’s compare to the Dynaudio Contour 20i’s?
Wow they look gorgeous! Im saving to get Dynaudio Special 40’s, I wonder how will they compare with these. Different price point tho.
I got floorstanding Canton 896 for six months. After listening to Dali Rubicon 6 and Dynaudio Focus 220 MK II,both of them sounded to me too laid back or polite comparing to my old Canton Ergo 100 DC.So I decided to get Canton 896 to replace my old 100DC and I am generally satisfied .But authority and punch bass of the old 100Dc still not reached, the 896 have other obvious qualities.Any suggestion?I listen classic rock, blues rock, classic jazz.Plinius integrated amplifier,Hana cartridge on MOFI turntable,Audioquest cables.
German’s are pretty good at engineering quality👍😀
Ha .. and over engineering.
Yes... They are too good at engineering... 👍
@@peekaboo4390 I know about the “over engineering”..I’ve owned two Mercedes😂😂😂.. never again. I guess speakers should be a safe bet🤷♂️
I'm German and I agree with the German engineering thing but when it comes to loudspeaker the British engineering (especially Harbeth) is much more natural and generally better in my opinion.
@@johnruppert5630 did u switch over to a bmw or an Audi or is it a VW ??? 😉😂
Unique driver materials utilization here, w/ceramic and titanium ... German quality.
Accuton, also German, produces über high-end ceramic drivers. I'm curious about a potential connection.
Steve PLEASE answer 💕 This or Dynaudio Special 40?
Are we gonna see you on an episode of hoarders some day?
Steve ....you will ruin me ...on your reviews I change my perception about Klipsch ...and ended up buying one ...which I didn't need practically...thats the power of your opinion ....'disclaimer ' ..I dont have any regrets ...about my purchase ..thanks a lot steve!
So you mentioned you liked the B&W 607s... but have you listened to the B&W 606S2 Anniversary stand mounts? I’d be keen to know what you think, great range and very capable across a range of genres imo.
I don’t disagree with what he heard with “Raising Sand” ... listened to it again and compared it to how Alison Krauss sound in her other records and yes Raising Sand is grainier overall... might be what T Bone was going after but I did not notice it before until now lol
Totally get what you mean about that Robert Plant/Alison Krauss album. Thuddy. I loved it the first time round. What have they done on that mix??
it sounds tube will bring a balance of tone & add little life into the speaker ?
"...here, in the South wing of my listening room..." 🧐
Don't get *too* posh on us now, Steve! 😅 😂
Wish you could review the canton 9k stand-mounted,Wooo.
Other European reviewers say the opposite.,..Canton is Klipsch or Polk of Europe.... better go for audio vector or dynaudio......marten ...😁
I'd like to hear how it works with more affordable electronics like Schiit or an A10 or A2 amp
If you can afford them you are not driving them with Schit gear.
Excellent, thank you
Would be interesting to know how it compares to kef ls50 meta, thanks for great review Steve
These are much different than the LS50's.......not even in the same class of sound.
Can anybody offer any advice on the sound of vintage ones? I have seen a pair of Karat 30s ~ 1988 for sale in the UK for a reasonable price and they seem super rare. With an 8" bass driver they seem like they'd offer decent presence but mainly they just look so cool with the felted front baffle and rounded edges.
It'd be awesome if you add a section 'albums mentioned in the video' in the description. Sometimes it's hard to find the exact spelling when the album cover doesn't mention it clearly. ☺
Vived that's a new tech term
Good one, Steve.
I wonder, are Nubert speakers available in the US? I guess not... they are quite reputable here in Germany.
Just out of curiosity, can you steer me to a "special" binding post? Great review!
WBT Binding posts are real nice but expensive !
sorry for this odd question! I love the aluminium racks in the background where you keep your records and books! what brand are they, please? or how would you call them (non english speaker here)?
I recently bought a pair of used Ergo 602's. They replaced a pair of JBL 308 mk 2's in my bedroom system. They fit the room better acoustically. My room is terribly boomy. The 602's are lean, dry , and clean. Bass light. Much better for listening to dialog on you tube, which is what I use them for in that room. Got my JBL 4430's and Luxman M4000 in the living room
Great move. Please review Quadral speakers too.
