There's sort of a catch 22 (I think that's the right term) thing going on. Viewers want to see new people react to horror movies. In all honesty, they want a mix of positive reception to what is being shown as well a trace of their own commentary or experience with the movie. But I think most people just want you to like it as much as they do. But if you or any of the other October horror reactors were actual horror fans, then you probably would have seen certain movies by now. So, it's just a bad mix because non horror fans just don't appreciate or like certain elements as much as horror fans. I don't blame non horror fans for their dislike of the genre. Do I disagree with them? Yes. But they can enjoy whatever they enjoy. I'll leave it at this. A lot of new movies that rely on jump scares suck imo because they don't build tension throughout and the stories lack. So, building tension is done w ok wonderfully in this movie. Even take out the horror element, the tension in the family is palpable. So if you don't feel that, I don't know what to tell ya. We must have watched two different movies.

    "Heeeeere's Johnny!"
Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Danny Lloyd.
Not An American Fact: As he lived in England, Stanley Kubrick was not at all familiar with the "Heeeeere's Johnny" line (from The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson (1962)) that Jack Nicholson improvised. He very nearly didn't use it.
Hot Take Fact: There is a great deal of confusion regarding this film and the number of retakes of certain scenes. According to the Guinness Book of Records, the scene where Wendy is backing up the stairs swinging the baseball bat was shot 127 times, which is a record for the most takes of a single scene. However, both Steadicam operator Garrett Brown and assistant editor Gordon Stainforth say this is inaccurate. The scene was shot about thirty-five to forty-five times.
Method Director Fact: Despite Stanley Kubrick's fierce demands on everyone, Jack Nicholson admitted to having a good working relationship with him. It was with Shelley Duvall that he was a completely different director. He allegedly picked on her more than anyone else. He would really lose his temper with her, even going so far as to say that she was wasting the time of everyone on the set. She later reflected that he was probably pushing her to her limits to get the best out of her and that she wouldn't trade the experience for anything, but it was not something she ever wished to repeat.

    1. Joe Turkel/Lloyd plays Tyrell in the original "Bladerunner" 😇
    2. "Here's Johnny" was adlib by Nickelson.
    3. It took over 60 takes for Jack to chop through the doors. He used his voluntary firefighting skills to get through all the takes. They had to keep replacing the doors because he went through them so fast..
    4. The reason King didn't like this adaptation of the movie is because he didn't like the changes Kubrick made. This thing was remade just for King and although the remake was more in line with the book IMVHO it wasn't as good at this one.
    5. Two of the changes he didn't like were Jack's decent into madness was too rapid, and Wendy wasn't such a patsy in the book.
    6. Shelley Duval said making this film was the worst thing she ever experienced in her life. She says she wouldn't do it again.
    7. Jack Nicholson and Scatman worked together in "One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest".
    8. The real villain here is the hotel itself.
    9. Watch Dr. Sleep. Danny is an adult and many of the loose ends will be cleared up.
    TUESDAY😲😏

Which is a joke lost on you because your Soo young. If you have time you should see some of the tonight show special segments with stars of the day.✌️❤️

You get the screeching music because of the dread of knowing he is descending into murderous madness. He shouldn't be annoying you, he should be terrifying you. Jack sells it so damn hard. I'm surprised you weren't buying.
This isn't the case for the book, but for the movie the primary horror is domestic violence. Wendy takes forever telling the dislocated shoulder story because she is in the FOG (fear obligation guilt) & working hard to rationalize her abusive husband's behavior. Maybe it's not sticking with you because you don't have the abuse experience needed to understand Wendy's feelings of helplessness. If that's the case, you are a blessed person.
The composer helped to develop the Moog synthesizer she used in this soundtrack. Groundbreaking stuff that led the way to digital music today.

This movie is not meant for people of your generation is a psychological horror which takes longer and more thought unfortunately your generation has a 2 second attention spand and way too many distractions with the internet and smart phones you never have to spend time alone with your own thoughts that is why the internet generation is so thoughtless. I wish the younger people of today would turn off their devices and spend a day with themselves to see if they like themselves. But instead they'd rather see how many likes they can get from others. And this is why we have snow flakes because the entire self-esteem of this generation depends on how many views and likes they get. Do they think not being famous is a form of punishment?

C'mon man, there were literally THOUSANDS of font styles available to be used on a movie even in the 80's. So, they decided to let the "scenery" be more prominent than the opening credit fonts. SO WHAT? The scenery and the setting are FAR more important than impressing YOU with the opening credit font style. . .GET A CLUE! They had tons of font styles they could have used, but they used the very plain ones ON PURPOSE!! They wanted the scenery and setting to be front and center and DOMINANT. Don't you get that??

What a judgmental guy you are. Mystery Science Theater 3k would have a literal field-day roasting your reaction to this movie.
    1. Why was the music so ominous when most of the time nothing occurred? The director clearly wanted the audience to feel surprised and have suspense considering the fact that the book he'd filmed had been a best seller world-wide for a decade. He wanted the viewer to not have the plot of the book in their mind like a map and an compass.
    2. Why would you mock the boy for leaving his hiding places repeatedly after realizing that the ghosts can speak and even unlatch pantry door latches? They could lead Jack right to Danny potentially, also, that isn't Danny in the end scene, that's Tony controlling Danny's body. Tony is someone older and wiser than Danny. How would Danny know how to back-track through snow to throw off his father and hopefully lose him inside the hedge maze?
    3. You constantly looking around talking about shadows and demons and ghosts was hilarious. Clearly the movie had an effect on you, but you negged the film towards the end until you convinced yourself it wasn't any good.
No offense, Jason, but you might have a touch of the 'tism as Theo Von puts it in his podcasts.

Suggesting a complete stranger has autism to discredit an opinion you disagree with is such an ableist and ignorant take. What are your credentials exactly to imply that? And if anyone is being judgmental, it's the people roasting this guy for sharing his first impression of a movie. The Shining is my favorite movie of all time and I don't think his criticisms are quite fair, but he's entitled to his thoughts regardless. Getting mad over a movie reaction is so insane IMO.

    • @johnnybmean74

@@brockhampton3078 I didn't read one critique of this guy's opinion that said he wasn't entitled to his opinions; they merely thought his opinions were shallow & stupid.

The "Here's Johnny" line is based off of "The Johnny Carson Show". Jack Nicholson improvised the line and at first Kubrick didn't get it either.
But yeah, I know what you mean by this movie not being scary. The only scary part I found in this movie was the bathtub scene. (That I still cannot watch to this day.) And maybe the Furry giving head scene, because wtf. But still, it's 2023 so things don't really surprise me anymore. Dr. Sleep (the sequel) was worse imo. But I've heard the book is way better. Same with "It". The original was kind of wild, but I've heard over and over how the book is nuts.
Also, they don't say it but I always thought Danny had Dissociative Personality Disorder and Tony was his alter. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
