I grew up with LEGO and Sonic (points gingerly at username I've had on LEGO's website for 20 years), this set was the best 30th birthday gift I could possibly get and I enjoyed building it, repetition and all... but I don't even disagree with most of what you've said here. The 2D gameplay is definitely not for everyone; I myself suck at the early games, even though they do appeal to my nostalgia so I can't hate them. The fandom itself generally agrees Sonic 3&K (and for that matter 2) is better than Sonic 1, even if purely from a gameplay standpoint. Certainly the set could've been so much better in so many little ways, and my (our) criticisms of the set coexist with my love for what we ended up actually getting. The fact that the fan submission was based on a newer game that people aren't familiar with is a big reason why they based the final product on Sonic 1, though. Much as it is disappointing for fans of Mania I think it was the right thing to do. And I personally am not mad that Tails and Knuckles aren't included, though of course it'd be amazing if they released more sets featuring them. And between this and Bionicle, you guys got the sickest McDonald's promotions (though the Snoopy stuff I got wasn't anything to sneeze at either). Thanks for posting this segment.
