- When Motown began in 1958, it had just two male groups, The Miracles and The Satintones. The Satintones were James Ellis, Chico Leverette, Robert Bateman, and Sonny Sanders. After a couple of years, lead singer James Ellis left and was replaced by Vernon Williams. We got all five members back together, no exceptions. Sonny Sanders had become a legendary arranger, having made many million selling records including all Jackie Wilson's 1960's hits on Brunswick. As soon as they all met up again in Detroit, they were rushed onto a TV show to sing "Shake Me Wake Me", before they'd even had proper time to greet each other after the passing of about twenty eight years. We cut five songs on The Satintones, "Perfect Combination", "It's A Rough World", "I Can't Get Next To You", "Half A Man", and this one, "Shake Me Wake Me". We also cut solo records with both Chico Leverette and James Ellis. We re-edited this video to improve it, so we reposted it up again and replacing the earlier inferior version.
My grandfather is James Ellis he's the best I Love My GP
Oh they sound great. So good to see Robert Batemen in action once again!
I showed this to my mom and now she wants her own personal copy of it.
one of the BEST motown songs ever! great live video! thanks so much
This is the greatest vid I've seen on RUclips to date...
Everyone knows the popular major groups from Motown..These guys were at ground zero when Gordy formed Motown...They never got enough credit for all the great R&B music they recorded. Thank God for You Tube..Now the average person knows about the Satintones..Not just collectors like me!
Just love this . Makes me feel all nostalgic for Motown .
That's correct, from left to right. Vernon's dead now but I think the other four are all still with us. I hear from James Ellis all the time.
IanLevine Chico Leverett is dead now the 3rd man going left to right.
@Mikkinumberone How cool. My home was filled with music growing up, but not like that. I have loved Motown since I the earliest 1960's. I was born in 1958, but had a sister who was a teenager, so I didn't miss any of the "younger music". I loved the British Invasion, folk and Beatnick jazz. I liked rock & roll. Loved classical as my mother was a classical pianist & gave lessons. But Motown was my favorite. A close rival was the soul music genre & then funk. How cool for you.
Hip way before the term was misused and abused. Thank you for posting.
At last some faces to match the sounds from way back when.....Cool.
Agreed.
Haven't heard the Satintones for probably close to 40 years. Good to hear them again. (Was this from "Kelly & Company" in Detroit?)Ian, You're making history by preserving history and making new history too! Keep it up...please.
I AM AN IAN LEVINE FAN!!!
Is this the line up Ian?
L to R - Vernon Williams, Sonny Sanders, Chico Leverette, Bob Bateman and James Ellis.
People always wonder what they would have sounded like if they had stayed with Motown until the company broke through with their signature sound. They wonder if they could have moved on from R&B to Soul and The Motown Sound. Here's the answer! They'd have been stars like The Temptations, Miracles, Four Tops and Spinners. Too bad they bailed out too soon, for Wilbur Golden's Correc-Tone Records. I loved Robert Bateman's productions with Brian Holland and Freddie Gorman at Motown. I imagine what great music they'd have made from 1962 through 1965.
Just love this version & prefer it to the FourTops .
