Just adding to the chorus of kids who heard this recording twenty years ago, whose lives were changed utterly 😭. Not to upstage any one else's story, because music affects all in so many ways, BUT I started playing banjo and bluegrass as a result of it, and it's led to a crazy career in music. I got my first banjo in November of 2001, had no knowledge of how to play other than listening to this recording, and though slow, I started figuring things out and I've now gotten to play some huge stages and festivals (including Strawberry!) in something like 30 countries and most every state. So, immense thanks to these guys. The combination of tradition, improvisation, humor and beauty is unparalleled. T o be able to see this concert has been a dream of mine, thanks so much to the uploader and the folks that recorded it, and most of all to the musicians. Really stoked to try and catch the newest album release that's happening right now!
What strikes me about the high standard of musicianship on display here is that without Tony Rice we may not have got to this level. I remember reading that Tony would “encourage” JD Crowe to tighten up his timing (its been sometime since I read this so I’m improvising on a memory) … the New South were arguable the best bluegrass band we’ve ever seen and from what I’ve gathered it was Tony who pushed for the all-round excellence they achieved … and Tony has passed on but these guys carry his spirit onward … thank you Tony! … and thank you Bryan, Bella, Sam, Mark, Jerry & Gabe . . .
Yes TONY RICE is/was the real INSPIRATION for these men to achieve this level of musicianship - And with that said TONY RICE left behind a great legacy not only in his own musicianship but in his influence to other players - Not only these we hear and see in this video BUT to many , many others as well !
I too had a copy of the soundboard from this show years ago. This is personally the most influential recording that I can think of, and now to be able to see it live is unreal. Thank you!
Just to clarify there wasn't (to the best of my knowledge) a sbd out there... there's a small fm transmitter at the festival that broadcasts the main stage and that's the source of the recording everyone has
I had the CD. Boot leg, at that. Rawked my world. : ) I'm a rock guitarist, but this changed my view of reality. Good stuff is good stuff. Nuf said. OHhhh. One more thing. Thanks for posting!!!!
I was there for the Bela Fleck and the Flecktones show in '94. Went for my 16th (my god that seems so long ago) birthday and it was amazing! This show is what turned me on to Bela Fleck and introduced me to one of the greatest bassists of all time: Victor Wooten. To see music this good, in a setting as pretty as Strawberry, man, it doesn't get much better than that. What a show. Thanks to Chris and Tom for giving me a heavy nostalgia fix.
The video is a bit rough but the sound is really, really good. Musicianship is 100% and the banter makes it all the more real. I wish I'd been at that gig...it was a doobie, I mean a doozie.
thanks to both of you for this. stumbled across this concert on nugs.net about 16 years ago in high school and it became one of my most played cds. never knew a video existed. the spanish point is insane
Big hand for Telluride Tom Heidger & Chris Stockwell for recording and putting this upload together. Much admiration and recognition to Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas, Bela Fleck, Bryan Sutton, Gabe Witcher and Mark Schatz for this historic all time highlight concert !
Thank you for this video! Awesome music, good sound, great to see these ingenious musicians. How can this video been online since early 2018 and still having only 172 likes?
You should at least give me credit for the video portion of this show, since it's obviously mine. Did you edit in the audio you got from a soundboard recording?
Telluride Tom Heidger, Sure thing! I'll add your name in the description and add your credit. Thanks for taping this! I added the music from the soundboard recording.
I know the sound quality in my video recording wasn't as good as the soundboard, but I wouldn't take the time to edit the entire set like you did. Kudos to you for that effort.
The audio from the camera is fine. I've had the soundboard recording since the show, and synced it up for my buddies who are show collector's to see/hear. Easiest to post on here and share to them. Again, Thanks for taping this! Must have been incredible to be there in person to experience it live.
Yes, it was an incredible show. That's why I decided to share it on youtube. It's one of my favorites. It took three 1-hour tapes (DVC) to record the entire show and I put it on 3 DVD disks to share with my friends.
I've also had the soundboard audio since the show ... and I was at Strawberry that Spring, but not in the Fall (and also there in 98 ) ... so finally seeing the video for this show is mind-blowing. Thank you both so much for sharing!!

We had this on four bootleg CD's and Overgrown Waltz was the bridesmaid processional at our wedding 23 years ago!
It don't get any better than this! :-)

Been waiting 20 years to see this. Thanks to poster and to Tom!
Gads has it been that long? I was there too, hubby videotaped it , I recorded off the HogRanch radio. This performance was unbelievably good.

To have been there was amazing. We videotaped it too. One of the best performances we have ever seen.
