Modified 1995 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4 - One Take

  • The Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4 (sold as the GTO in Japan and overseas) was an incredibly advanced and complex car for its time; it was eventually priced out of the US market at the end of the 1990's alongside the Supra, 300ZX, and RX7. This one has been modified with a full exhaust, intake, coil over suspension, and the darkest window tints we've ever seen.

    Hey this is my car! Just wanted to say thanks to all 255k people that watched the video! Also thanks to Matt for having me on. Also wanted to clear up the smoking issue. It was actually the front brakes overheating causing the smoke. Running a 3700 lb with two heavy guys up and down a canyon for 13 minutes will do that lol. I have Hawk HPS pads which are great for spirited street driving but they will overheat on a track or a hard canyon run.

    VR4 owner here, the hate in these comments is expected. People who've never owned, driven let alone even SEEN a VR4 saying "it didn't break at least 3 times during the shoot". Not sure why these cars attract so much hate, I daily mine and have for years, rain snow or shine and its never broken down or let me down. Apart from regular maintenance like oil changes, timing belt etc. I never had to fix anything.

      I also had a VR4 for 5 years and it really doesn't have many problems, its a crowded engine bay sure, but I've worked on pickup trucks that are tight as well. You sit so low in these things, its really quite neutral in cornering and the 4ws makes the turnin very crisp, a car I miss owning despite a bit tough to source parts and a bit tough to work on (25spline output shaft set)

      The bad reputation comes from back yard mechanics that are in over their heads with trying to mod an unforgiving engine that is difficult on a good day to work on. Coupled with an engine computer that does not like to be messed with or tuned. Most guys do not know how to trick that computer without blowing up their engine. This is the cause of the bad reputation. If you mod this car you must know what you are doing. Most do not then they sell that half assed mod to some body else and it becomes the new owners headache. First time he opens up the throttle and parts fly out. Busted this or that. Story becomes most unreliable car ever. Stock these cars go well beyond 300,000 miles on routine maintenance. But it has an interference engine. meaning if you do not change out the timing belt every 60,000 miles which is not cheap, you will probably trash the entire engine. This by the way is part of the routine maintenance. These cars cost about 2k these days used. The cost of doing the timing belt is about 1,500. Almost the same price as the car itself. It is not a car to cut corners with. If you put off or delay maintenance because you are short of cash it will come back and cost you triple when it does break. I have owned my 95 vr4 for 18 years and it never broke down on me and left me stranded.

    • @blackmount1
      @blackmount1 8 лет назад +18

      Kanaric. No, I definitely would. Since I've wanted one since they were still new on the show room floor when I was 10, and have owned one for almost 7 years. Playing Grand Turismo as a Kid and this being almost a star Car lf the game sealed the deal for me. The Supra, RX7 and GTR didnt do it for me.
      First time I saw one Neighbor across the street brought home a brand new 1999 VR4. At the time I had no idea what it was, All i knew was I wanted it.
      When I retire at 50, I will have 3 cars in the main portion of my garage among my collection. A Ferrari F50, Jaguar XJ220, and parked between them will be the same VR4 I have today.

      I think the 300ZX is the better looking out of the 1990's Japanese trio of sports cars (That were available in the US.) Exterior wise, all you'd really need to do if you were Nissan, is put some modern LED tail lights, Xenon headlights, LED daytime running lights, and a 17 or 18 inch wheel and you'd have a car that could go on dealership lots today. And if it had the V6 from the 370Z as a base engine option and something like a de-tuned version of the VR38DETT for the higher spec models, along with a good 6 Speed as standard, along with a DCT as an optional transmission.

      The did a multi year hard sell on zero down, no payments for a year and no interest loans to anyone no matter their credit. This was mid 2000's before the recession. They didn't think that Americans would sign up for loans they had no ability or even intention of even paying off. Well, many people did - got a free car for a year then gave it back to Mitsubishi saying oh well my credit score already sucked.
      They were left with thousands of cars that 1 year later after harsh ownership (and likely not even an oil change) were worth less than it cost them to manufacture. They lost a lot of money and tanked the resale market on their vehicles. Which means why buy a 2008 when a used 2007 costs half as much?
      Then the coolant lines they made for San Onofre nuclear power plant north of San Diego were found to be faulty decades before they were supposed to be rated for and the bill was going to be $7.6B in settlements and repairs. Mitsubishi finally gave up on life and now just produces shit.

      @blackmount1 8 лет назад +3

      Must have been an article/review by some stance fanboy kid. That would mean the Supra, and GTR are also heavy and under powered since they had the same power output...
      The only reviews you should truly take to heart on these cars are ones from when they were brand new, and time could not take any effect on them.
      I have a large book that has every article written for 3000GT by all the major magazines from 1990-1999. I've read it obsessively, one of the best articles in there is called "Fast Five" from 1991, and features various cars including the 3000GT and the NSX where it tests and breaks down the performance data, the 3000GT killed the test, and even put down a faster lap time then the NSX.

      I wonder if you could be ruled partially at fault for a rear end collision by having your tail lights so dark that it's hard to tell if you're braking? I've had a couple of close calls with people that have tinted tail lights and people with shitty eBay aftermarket tail lights that the tail lights are almost exactly as bright as the brake lights so when they brake you can barely tell the difference in the brightness.

    Great car, and I miss mine! Andrew's driver's seat appears to be too high, (driver's knees in the wheel) maybe it's been raised slightly? My personal preference is to be as close to the floor as possible while also maintain a straight line view over the hood. The car translates the road better in a firmer seat, and near the floor. The suspension seems stiffer than stock. The weighty feel is just right IMO. It's a GTO, comfort and cruise is part of the package, a lighter feel would not be a GTO. I have found the base model to vary in performance car to car. Some base models are more torquey, mine had something extra at the top end, easy to light up the tires, (and keep them going through 2nd) and it broke traction (front wheels) at the top end in 2nd range, that would be 68 MPH at red line. I fault the base trans as being too wide in gear spacing... a 6 speed would be heaven. The base model is not a car nobody wants, I disagree.. it's lighter at 3200 Lbs, an advertised hp of 220 varies... some cars develop more than that.. it's a four cam engine (cross flow head) which really should do better than the advertised figure. The 3000GT does corner flat, and these cars are underrated IMO.

    You can make 600HP on the stock Bottom end of the 2nd Gens no problem....You are playing with fire with the pistons and the rods but the crank and block are fine. The driveline is the problem. Around 600 crank you start to need to worry about the bellhousing but a couple hundred bucks with a brace and you are set till you start making closer to 700 at the wheels but the community has that solved too.

      It wouldn't be your baby if it was in that series since you wouldn't be able to afford it. If Paul Walker pulled up with a VR4 on the trailer instead of the Supra it would be the car worth 40 grand now. As much as I would LOVE a Mark IV Supra I would never pay a Fast and Furious tax. I'd rather buy a Mark III Supra and spend the 20 grand I saved on a built motor and all of the goodies. When I was younger I would have never considered the older Supras but they've grown on me for sure. I like how unsuspecting they look; if you made big power you would really piss people off lol. It just looks like any average 80s beater car.

    The reason why this car is so loved is because this was one of the first cars you could reasonably expect to own that broke 0 to 60 in sub sixes. And, while hard to work on, the engine had easily twice the hp just waiting to be unleashed... in the 90s. Let that sink in.
    Doesnt sound like much now, but when they came out the vr4s were monsters, and the AWD essentially guaranteed you always won 1/8ths and quarters vs any stock car for the time period. Heavily modded, they basically beat everything. Still beat most things to this day.
    Additionally, while everyone complains about the weight on paper--remember it's a grand touring car. You dont want anything that weighs much less because the ride quality becomes shit over the long duration races these cars were made for. GT cars, to this very day, keep roughly the same vehicle weights.
    Sadly, them being hard to work on compared to the legendary Nissan 3.0 and rotary of the rx7 killed the car, but for those that knew what they were doing and put in the work you got a up to 640hp car with very little additional investment that drove buttery smoother the point it could be dailied.
    Which is what I did with mine until an illegal immigrant took my 94 vr4 out with their prius, but... that's s different story for another time.

      These cars are easy to work on, just most people who own them suck at working on anything in general, and have a very basic set of tools.
      Also the only ones that truely had any type of issue was 91s, and early 92s. They had a Transfer case seal issue which Mitsubishi recalled and still to this day will fix for free if it hasnt been done.
      Otherwise it was strictly a shitty owner issue, like any performance car.
      My VR4 has 260,000 miles on its engine. 140,000 of which I am responsible. it has alot of hard driving and track miles on it.
      The only things Ive done to it is routine maintenance, Timing Belt, Water Pump, Oil Pump, and Pulleys etc.
