It's wonderful to see these colorful scenes, with relaxed and happy fair-goers. But it's also distressing to know that just four months after the opening of the 1939 World's Fair in New York, World War II began. According to Wikipedia, some of the pavilions represented countries that had been invaded by the Axis powers, and were closed.

    Fantastic quality!
I believe my father went there ...
You can imagine the impression that would have made on a 10 year old boy at the time!

16mm Kodachrome movie film had just been introduced by Kodak. This was the same filmstock used to create Viewmaster reels, which also appeared that year. Suddenly color film was available to the masses, and the World's Fair was a great subject.
We're fortunate that this footage has been preserved - acetate film stock is not a permanent medium.

The iconic architecture (or sculpture) that is associated with that Fair is The Trylon and Perisphere. A very large round ball or spherical shaped form and a tall narrow 3 sided pyramid. It was replicated into salt and pepper shakers, bookends, table top decor, and embossed into leather book jackets.

Hey,..really great footage! I happen to have collected some (antique) memorabilia, from that Worlds Fair. I collect salt and pepper shakers, many with architectural themes, from World Fairs and other significant monumental structures, like The Empire State Building. And I found a wonderful souvenir booklet, filled with photos, from that Fair.

The unifying theme of the 1939 fair was "The World of Tomorrow", with the slogan "Dawn of a New Day".
This made some sense, given that the world was only beginning to emerge from the depths of the Great Depression - which wouldn't entirely ease until the end of WWII.
