“A Labour Government That Doesn’t Like Motorists” Starmer Fails To Rule Out Fuel Duty Rise

  • The Prime Minister has insisted things will improve by the next election as he sought to “inject some hope” after Tuesday’s warnings of more pain to come.
But he was unable to say a rise in fuel duty would not be part of the package when the Budget is announced on October 30.
In his speech in 10 Downing Street’s garden on Tuesday, Sir Keir warned the next Budget would be “painful”, and the public needed to “accept short-term pain for long-term good”, taken by some as paving the way for tax rises.
Talk’s Mike Graham discusses the story with founder of Fair Fuel UK, Howard Cox.

well - they have bought into the big lie about EV's haven't they! The environmental cost of an EV is horrendous, it can spontaneously explode producing extremely toxic fumes that can kill you in one breath, cant be put out and can devastate an area better than a ruzzian missile in a block of flats. Will an EV battery last 10 years? Because if it doesn't it ISNT 'environmentally friendly' compared to an ICE.

Don't get sucked into the Hype, fuel duty is something like £0.59p but the price you pay is comprised of Crude oil, Refining, transport, retail and duty, then the kind Government applies VAT so the VAT on the £1-60, per litre charge , equates to £0.27p so actually with Duty and VAT the Government gets £0.86p per litre THATS HALF, so without the taxes fuel would be £0.74p per litre no one explains it this way I wonder why. Oh when the retailer and/or oil company put a 1p increase on fuel the government assures you it's nothing to do with them, and they gain nothing....LIES.. any increase affects the VAT so a 1p increase means the price goes up by 1.2p so the Government gets an extra 0.2p on the sly

Fuel duty increase by Labour would be economically illiterate - the vast majority goods & services in the UK are transported by roads, e.g. all supermarket food, so it would hugely increase costs & inflation for everyone. Inflation wrecks the economy.

Pubs have lost their charm over the years, particularly with the rise of the gastro pub. Once, pubs were the heart of the community-a place where working men could gather freely, share ideas, and solve local problems. They were more than just places to drink; they were vital spaces for connection and resolution. Now, however, we've traded that authenticity for the trappings of a so-called liberal society, and the result is a loss of the communal spirit that once made pubs so essential.

  • @richardpiper4828

Given the dire economic situation and need to raise taxes a rise in fuel duty commensurate with inflation over the past 5 years, i.e. since the huge increase in debt post the Pandemic and the invasion of Ukraine, doesn’t seem unreasonable. Bear in mind vehicles have become more efficient/economical as as result of the drive to reduce greenhouse gasses and a now lower world oil prices so what the motorist is paying out probably has not increased at all. If Money has to be found from somewhere fuel duty increases is a less uncomfortable source than most others. The country’s spending is out of control and if the Govt is not going to tackle that then tax increases are inevitable.
