ProGuitarShop Riff of the Day. Learn how to play The Clash -- Train in Vain. We're using the Subdecay Spring Theory to generate a deep spring reverb sound, as heard from Joe Strummer's guitar. A deceivingly simple riff with plenty of snap from a Telecaster make this a fun one to learn. Don't forget to ease back and let the spring fill the empty spaces of this funky, yet melodic tune from their famous London Calling album. Enjoy The Clash, Train in Vain guitar lesson.

Iconic album with this golden hidden track! I bought this record new at Licorice Pizza, North Hollywood, CA January 1980.
Cool.
I've been listening to this song my whole life in standard form,..but when Andy slowed it down at the end, I realized what I must do. I will get the Blues Brothers car from the movie, with the huge PA horns on top, and play the slow version far and wide, while driving at top speed. Thank you for providing me this opportunity.
Great lesson, and long live Mick Jones.
what an era!
such a good song. Love the clash
I love these lessons PGS puts up. Thanks everyone at PGS for putting up such great lessons
Such a great song! Sounds great on the tele🙌🔥🔥🔥
Andy keeps doing these on every song I want to learn. Thanks Andy!
love the sound of this rig
Why do people "dislike" lessons. Its a lesson!
Wow that tone. Just wow.
Wow you make it look so easy I can't wait to get started thanks a lot
well done PGS, love this new format
Love this. So good.
thank you Andy! You sir are awsome!!!
Thanks so much! One song I've always wanted to learn,
encore une tres bonne leçon merci andy
"Track 5 is Train In Vain", as the vinyl run-out groove used to say
Great job Andy.
Thanks Andy
Thanks!
great thanx
That's sweet !
You must have read my mind, We were thinking of covering this in our band.
That guitar has me drooling
YES!!YES!!!YES!!!
this guy andy is sick! is he in a band good taste in music and good instruction!
overdub is a bonus!
Before pattern #1 is that a barred D and 2 barred A's (the second with the bass string)?
Thanks for the posting
Really cool idea guys! I'm not into The Clash, but presentend like this - well, great way to force my lazy ass to dial some new sounds into Mustang combo and my fav tele preset on Variax ;)
Great lesson! What model Tele is Andy using in this and other videos I've seen the same guitar used? Custom shop Tele? Thanks.
Yeah, i think so I really like that sound! I was just wondering what exactly it is :).
Do you mind telling me the finger positions are for D and A. I am sorry, but I am not completely sure what strings are being pressing down on or not.
Awesome, as usual.
Buen tutorial
Is there anyway we can request songs for Andy to do lessons on or is do you guys already have a set list of songs you are doing?
Does anyone know where I can find tabs for this particular version?
Dear PGS - is there a possibility You will review Gibson SGJ and LPJ guitars? I would love to hear Andy's opinion on them, played through some nice amps and pedals
Hey, can you tell me what amp are you using in this lesson? Thanks!
You see kids, Andy has a pumpkincaster and he ain't complain'n none!
Please do some black crowes lesson
Would be better if I knew how to play any of the chords lol is there a website that has all the chords so I can learn ?
Would you be able to add the tabs please? They would help a lot :)
not often you get a total guitar sensei teaching for free.
How come on the intro video it looks like you are playing a completely different chord technique on the main riff to the standard power Chord riff you show us? That first technique looks like the way the clash would play it live too..
BobConanOwen he's doing major triads in the intro which like you said is the accurate way of playing it
Andy, do a Holiday in Cambodia lesson please!! Thanks!! :)
What's the amp?
That's gotta be a fender amp. I'd know that sound anywhere!
Telecaster, the best guitar ever made.
is that a pick?
whether you find tab or not , it would be really helpful if you try and learn it simply by the vid. trust me
More of a guitar cover then a lesson really. But pretty cool none the less.
Sorry for my beginners status here, just starting out learning how to play but most sites seem to have it as D A A yet it seems as though he is playing other chords. Can anyone help me with this, as it is a wonderful song. And I apologize for my amateur questions here.
+BCE Films
Look at 1:55. That is where the D-A-A riff is taught/played. It is one part of the song, but obviously there are other parts.
+BCE Films Watch his right hand and which strings he strums. For the the first "A" he doesn't strum the top string or two, then the second "A" he does. This helps distinguis the 2 notes.
+Skottie Tilson thank you so much, that has definitely helped since I've had a bit of a problem with the right strumming as well!
+Skottie Tilson Do you mind telling me the finger positions for D and A. My apologies again but I'm not wholly sure on what strings he's pressing down on or not.
any tabs?
London Calling :P
je parle francais aussi.
I appreciate the production value of this video, and don't even mind that it is basically a commercial for a reverb pedal (gotta pay the bills somehow) but there's some issues. Biggest one for me; watch yourself playing during the intro part of this video, watch your hands forming the A-D part. First, you don't say at any time that you're playing A and D, but worse, you aren't doing the same barre chords that you do later when you're showing the close ups. It looks more like a modified F at the 3rd fret. It's cool, sounds great, but I wish you had done a close up of that finger positioning.
Gee, are you trying to sell any particular pedal? Is the word "Spring" in it?
PGS doesn't carry Gibson guitars to the best of my knowledge. There are other brands the cover a similar niche in the guitar kingdom, but do it at a much better cost-to-quality ratio.
Oh yes, You're probably right, but SGJ and LPJ are just stunning, and cost about 1000$ ;]
Lol im realizing that this is one of those song's that sounds simple, yet nobody can play it. This is the ten video ive seen where its not only played using different chordas, but it also sounds just off enough... does anybody know the correct way to play it?
This is right
So, that's how you call Ronald McDonald? Zaginam Czasoprzestrzen? I bet almost all the kids are dyslexic.
;-)
First!
This riff always sounds like three chords, but nope. I even hear three without the bass!
The lessons great but Mick always played lead and he played a Les Paul. watch?v=eNot47WRBFk
Strummer would have played most of these parts... on his Tele
haters gonna hate :)
Actually, no. "Zaginam czasoprzestrzeń" in a rough translation would mean "I bend time and space". And btw dyslexia is a medical condition which makes it a lot harder to learn to read and write, it's not the inability to do it.
tabs would really suckm thanks bruh....wtf.
I just want to learn how to play guitar on it. Not a waste of 77 seconds of the song that I CAME here for. You wouldn't think I already knew the song? And then 29 seconds of random stuff that doesn't help me with learning this song on the guitar at all.
+Westley Trease Jeez Westley, don't get your panties in a twist. In case you missed it he was showing you how to play the song in those 77 seconds. This song is simple enough to just watch the chords he's playing, if you really need instruction beyond that, maybe you need to start with something simpler. Thank you to the uploader for taking time to show how the song is played.
Thanks man. That really helped. xD
