Allen is the most under rated guitar player in all of music. I love that you are showing his talent. He my all time favorite.
DITTO
I'm with you, brohams! I was so into Skynard when I heard this song, I got the "Pronounced" album & learned every song but never got those tiny nuanced open lead-in notes with a few exceptions... Tommy boy is breaking it down quite well
Why do people always say someone is “under rated” when they like them?
Without a doubt!!!
@@todddickinson3262 Who exactly underrated him? Lynyrd Skynyrd sold out everywhere they played and sold millions of records , they’re also in the Rock n Roll hall of fame so how is Allen or any of them “ underrated”?
Allen's playing spoke to me so much that I built a custom guitar from scratch as a tribute. I wish I could post the pics for y'all. And BTW I live adjacent to the legendary hellhouse property down here in Peter's Creek, Florida. Only a hundred yards from the railroad track photos on the "nuthin fancy" album.
Would love to see that guitar in action if you have a link!
I used to ride by there every day to high school smelling the fragrances of the nearby cow fields along the way. Through some friends, I eventually made it to the HH before it was no longer - what a special place it was. Amazing they could play in those cramped quarters!
Man there's talented people. Then there's Musical geniuses. I can't imagine what Ronnie was thinking when he chose Gary's slow laid back easy style then wanted Allens hyper fast pace slamming the strings thru the guitar. But we are so lucky and blessed he did. I can't name two more totally different guitarists that sound so good and compliment each other better.
Amen bro.
He didn’t pick it it’s how it ended up.
And that there could be 3 of them on stage with no ego. Amazing.

Isn’t amazing when magic just falls into place?
Are you stupid? Ronnie didn't choose Allen Collins because of his style. Ronnie never even heard Allen play. As a matter of fact, Allen climbed a tree when he heard Ronnie was looking for him. Allen thought Ronnie was going to beat him up. They weren't but about 14 years old. Ronnie was looking for him because he heard he played guitar.
Love the way you integrated film of Allen actually playing the notes that you replicated. It's nice to confirm that you're playing at the correct fret/position.
Thank you!
That was cool
Exactly, many guitarists miss these very important gems... which make the difference between good and GREAT guitar tunes
There will never be another! His energy, skills and techniques are unmatched.
I've been waiting for YEARS to see your Skynyrd licks back on RUclips. THANK YOU!
I love it when people make videos showing how to play some of the nuanced pieces of each of the players parts. I hear them but I haven't gotten to where I can pick them up and figure them out yet & most tabs are absolutely wrong. Thanks for sharing!
I appreciate the nostalgia, I've been playing exactly what you just showed us since I was 16 (1977). I'm now 62. RIP Allen, Ronnie, Steve, Leon, Billy and Cassie and Gary and Ed.
Thanks!
Allen Collins is my favorite Skynyrd guitarist and an underrated player in my opinion. Not only was he the coolest looking guy on the stage but he was an incredible player he gets overlooked because, Ed King, Gary Rossington and Steve Gains but Allen was holding it down and he also played killer leads to but he’s the one I always focused on when I watch old Skynyrd videos.
Thank you for this. Allen and Skynyrd is largely responsible for me continuing to learn guitar when I was first starting as a teen. I’ve not really played much in the last 4/5 years but the last week I’ve decided to break the guitars out and play a little more and seeing this video was a nice little piece of info, and there’s not much like this video I’ve ever found on Allen’s playing.
Glad to hear you're getting back into it! Allen and Gary inspired me too. Really the search for Allen's fat firebird tone was the main reason I fell in love with his play style. Playing like him also toughens your hands!
BTW, i love the way you throw in the clips of Alan, at this same point in the song. Awesome editing, dude.
Dude i love your Tone and Style of teaching… Keep all of these Classic ROCK lessons coming! 🎸
Appreciate it ✌🏼
Thank you!
So much more to their songs, would love to see you dissect Whiskey Rock and Roller like this
Theres so much going on in every Skynyrd song that every one misses. Listen to Sweet Home and see if you can find things you've been missing its not just a simple 3 chord song as most people think. Theres so much more going on with the chords and notes.
I've been playing that song since the 70's when I had to start learning it off an LP, and I just learned things about how my favorite guitarist actually gets his tone!!! Thanks!! You gained a subscriber!
this is really an intro into playing lead. there is more going on here than lead and rhythm guitars it's a combo attack. thanks for this, love playing this and learning new ways to play it.
Thanks! Learning any Skynyrd techniques will improve your solo game fast
Wow. This is a really great lesson. Thank you for highlighting Allen's guitar mastery, as that's one of my favorite sounds from the band!
Many of the guitar sounds they made have inspired me, but i haven't seen much info about Allen.
Excellent playing, too! You've obviously used your studying of his technique to improve your own playing. You have truly captured his sound. 👍 👌
So true about the picking hand. Most people concentrate too much on the chord hand. The feel comes from the picking hand.
Love the nuances you get into. I thought I knew this song. Thanks so much!
I have always loved the jam on this song, and have always tried to separate who was playing what. It was Alan's riff's I was hearing the whole time! Thank you!!! 😃
Wow, so good to see you did dive into this material and nailed it. I love the screaming sound of that firebird. Allen Collins was a giant! Thank you for posting ❤.
That right there is what made Skynyrd so unique, and why they always stood out to me
Dude, great to have this YT back. Loved ut then love it now ...hope to see more keep 'em coming please.
Man,you are a really good teacher. Your explanation and actual neckplay is frickin awesome. Thanks, Tim
I’ve been learning a ton from your golf videos this past year, and my jaw dropped seeing you turn around in the beginning of this video now. Consider yourself my guru. Had no idea you made guitar videos too
Man, too bad RUclips wasn't around 35-40 years ago.. to play like this kid back then, I would be living a very different life. Thanks for all the lessons!
You channel Allen beautifully. How he must smile down on you. Dynamite stuff Tom.
So glad you're back Tom!
I play and get into the same songs. Love my new Gibson Explorer. I need a tremolo for it next. Nice work!
Cant wait to watch this again and play along. Thanks man. Skynyrd was my first rock and roll love and I still love em!! "On the Hunt" is my favourite recently. The favourite changes lol. I love this damn song so much man what a fun jam
Awesome vid Tom!!! Love the break down and the little things that you show that actually makes this song great. I could also here the intro of the song Trust by Skyrnd when you was showing things we could add to chords while playing. Appreciate the content you put out. KEEP ROCKING!!!!!
Thanks Shawn! You can see how Allen's style comes out in many different riffs. He likes to use those chords. He even does it in Searching too
He is my all time favorite rythym guitarist
Your really Good at teaching and my favorite southern rock band too boot.
Such an under rated guitar player. That entire band was on fire. So glad I was able to see them back in the day.
this guy is the BEST!! Tom i love watching u! u play allen collins like NO ONE ELSE but allen!! your the man! i don’t play guitar.. but allen and u sure make me want to !!! keep up great work
Sir, your vids are blessed with the enthusiasm and knowledge. I didnt get the Skynyrd bug till about '84, After all there were so many bands that looked cool, but couldnt cut it. Luckly my B.S. detector worked ok, so getting to see Guns n Roses at the Marqee in '86 were great gigs. Allen was always the guy i fell in with, like me he's 6ft 4 and i love his guitar work, Its a pleasure watchin' your enethusiasm and ong may it continue 🎸
Thank you Jonathan! I'll be sure to get more Allen Collins content out. He was dynamite on the stage
Nice Job, that was beautiful !
Excellent breakdown/analysis and playing.
Great channel.
Very inspiring!
I had no idea you were back, Tom
Glad to see you buddy
Nice playing and nice editing, man.
That style of chord use was pretty popular back then, used by many guitarists, in various different forms.
The guitarist that first made it popular was Jimi Hendrix.
He used that style of chord use in a song called "The wind cries Mary".
When I first started playing, I took notice of songs that used that style of chording.
The Doobie Brothers had a song called Without You, that use that same chording.
I'm sure that this styling has blues roots and were probably used in earlier decades as well.
I love Firebirds.... they have such a unique sound
Thank you for this insight
This was in my feed and this comment is before actually watching the video. I’ve never seen this channel before, but seeing Allen Collins in the title, I had to hit play. He’s a hero of mine who no one ever talks about.
Plenty of Allen to talk about around here :)
I still don’t know how he stayed in tune and didn’t break strings. He played so aggressively on stage.
Bigger strings?
Great lesson! I hope your giving private lessons to young players. You do a great job teaching.
Awesome! So much there!!
Cool vid! Subscribed 🎉
Excellent job ty !
Great vidio, so much help, thanks
Great video Tom... Diggin' the Firebird...
I SO GLAD YOU BACK. . SO MISSED.
Great lesson! Long live Lynyrd Skynyrd!!
Thanks for getting into the DNA of what's going on.
Tom please do a video on blues medley. I think that’s some of Allen’s most interesting playing
This is very cool. Glad I found this channel. I have been watching your golf videos for the past two months. Now, I can work on my guitar licks when I'm not taking crispy divots!
Very crispy, thanks for joining in!
Hey Tom, Good to see you back dissecting the best of the best! Great job as usual. ITS IN THE DNA...lol
Bless him, Allen was amazing
❤
Really well done
Awesome Tom!! Skynyrd is one of my favorite bands but I often get confuse with who’s playing what. It would be great if you could explain the differences between Collins, Rossington, King, Gaines..and Medlocke who I absolutely love. Thanks Bro
That comes with a long time of listening and it a huge plus to play guitar then you pick out the tone of Gary's 59 Les Paul or Allen's firebird or Ed King's strat or Steve gains strat . Once you see them live in concert on RUclips a few times then you'll know exactly who plays what. Sometimes it will surprise you
Plus it’s listed on the back of their first two albums
The way I see it is with the original band, Gary sounded a bit like Paul Kossoff, Allen was more like Clapton in his Cream days, and Ed was on a Strat, and sounded more like a country picker. When Steve Gaines came along he replaced Ed, and Rickey replaced Allen. A bit over simplistic I know, but it's a start. Watch the youTube vids as well to see who's playing what. And don't forget Hughie Thomasson and Randall Hall, who were also with them. Hughie's best work was with the Outlaws, and I always reckoned that Skynyrd should done a couple of Outlaws numbers live.
I'll make a video on this. Should be fun to talk about!
Brilliant guitarist
Guitar in winter golf in summer, good to see more skynyrd
Excellent video. As a young kid I saw Allen playing this on his Firebird, later Explorer over 75,76,77, in the UK (Cardiff,Bristol,Bristol). You have the tone set just great. What model Katana is that and what were the settings ?
Thanks! So cool you got to see Allen in person. I've got some secret sauce settings on the Katana. I use the built in blues driver pedal to make a tube sound. Crunch channel.
Awesome setup for a video lesson...love the rhythm playing in Skynyrd in general too ...so so good!!!! Great content ❤
Thank you Josh!
Thanks bro 🍾
Really cool thank you
Excellent insight and lesson!
Good to see you back on the axe! I've been waiting for you to break out a riff on the 7 I on your golf chanel! Keep it up!
Maybe need a Gibson 7 iron?!
Nice axe!! 💚🎸
Allen was a beast
Great tone you have there
Thanks!
Do you have a golf channel? I swear there is a guy that looks like you. Always love your lessons
Crispy!
Allen threw a bunch of tasty double stops everywhere he could. He kept it bouncing and he was entertaining himself for fear of getting bored as well as serving the raucousness of the song. Those who know...know.
Beautiful ax my man!
GOOD JOB, WELL DONE
I definitely subscribed thankyou for the lesson 😂
Man I thought you had your shirt on backwards and inside out at first. Nice tone from that katana. Nice to see his rhythm playing getting attention, it's greatly overlooked. I always liked how Billy Gibbons creatively used that standard blues pattern and made it sound interesting too. Good tips on this video!
LOL - it's the Allen Collins baseball shirt style! Thanks.
Allen and Mike Campbell are the most underrated players ever
Along with Joe Walsh👍
Mike Campbell lol
I spy a Katana. Plus,a really cool video on Allen's style. Yep,subscribed👍
Excellent stuff Love Allen’s playing. One thing you didn’t mention during the trick 2 staccato part is the muting between playing chords to enhance the staccato-ness. Not sure if you were doing left or right hand muting.
Thanks! Yeah it gets complicated with the muting as he does it in so many different places and ways. You have to feel it when you play. Sometimes I mute without realizing because that's the sound I was going for in that moment.
Happy to have stumbled upon this channel. Ricky Medlock is one of my favs. He gets little recognition not being an original member. Got any Blackfoot?
Great! Regards from Poland!
Perfect tone. What are you amp settings.
Skynyrd has such great phrasing in the guitar parts.
It is always good to discover things that has been doscovered fifty years ago. Check out The Eagles. Those guys were all session musicians and what they could do with simple major scale will blow your mind
Thanks for this great lesson. I'm a big Lynyrd Skynyrd fan. Alan Collins was a great guitar player. And Ronnie Van zant knew all the lyrics without having to write one down.! If that's not amazing in itself I don't know what is. I wanted to learn this song whiskey rock and roller for a while. I got a Les Paul Epiphone. It will have to do. Thanks again! And Rock On!
My favorite guitarist.
Good work dude- sweet guitar. As a lefty, ima bit jealous... the amp sounds great!
Sounds like those Trust rhythms which was a great tune. Allen and Gary traded off on the rhythm and the leads all the time. 🤘
Great video
Oh yeah ❤
Very good observation sir, the right hand is as much or more important than the left for somethings. Your right is cooking Thanks
Excellent! What amp are you using? BOSS? Great sound
Boss Katana version 1 with my own secret tone sauce settings!
@@TomsRockinGuitar thank you so much! Amazing secret sauce-for sure! I’m enjoying your feeds. All the best
Thank you for breaking it down.
How would I get these tones out of my Marshall? any recommendations? Love all the Skynyrd content!
Tom, I have been a long time member on your website and now I subscribed to this monthly channel. I can’t get ahold of you. I need the last lead video 5 of Dreams. You mention it in video 4, but it is not up on the website. How can I get it? And will you also be able to help me with some other Molly songs?
Great breakdown and explanation. I also like that you have a Katana, like me. :)
Thank you!
takes a cool guy to make some cool sounds like those
Many hours of practice in Hell house, too.
