Even as a drummer who mainly played to Technical Death Metal and Deathcore, John Blackwell was always a large inspiration to me after seeing him on the artists page on drummerworld back in 2006, his use of limb independance is fantastic, outside of this video as well I loved his groove, he knew most importantly how to play for the song as first priority, rest in peace you legend.
How could anyone dislike a tribute to someone who's passed away? He mentored a few of my friends and I got to know him a little, it's crazy to think he's gone
Words can’t describe his technique, ability, feel, groove, talent and the list goes on for how good John was on the drum. He was so chill and down to earth as well. RIP man you are forever missed.
I still can't believe it. Your spirit will live on in every single note that you have ever played. Thank you for inspiring so many others and for everything you did. You will always be missed and never ever forgotten. Forever in our hearts!
Thank you Mr. Blackwell, he is not dead. He just went to play funk with his friends in heaven. He is in a better place together with the Lord. God bless your soul and your family is a great loss both musical and personal for our entire community of musicians.
John, you're one of my fav players. Always cool, relaxed and focused. I got your 1st dvd when it came out. . after I saw you with Prince in 2000 in Dallas and that remains to this day my fav concert ever. Your style and showmanship was second to none. Ive never seen anything like that in drumming. Pure groove, power, pocket and lotsa surprises... You did things in a way that were your own. You will always be one of the greatest of musicians, not just drummers. . Im still so sad you're not here, along with that other great and rare legend....Every 4th of July, I will remember one more great American hero.
I loved John very much! Spent quite a bit of time studying his ferocious - finesse style. Very unique and full of funk! He made a lot of fabulous noise on the kit but on the contrary was such a peaceful and gracious individual! Thanks for the inspiration John! Such a shame he had to leave us so soon, but I'm sure he's smiling up above in God's kingdom. Thoughts and prayers are with his family.
I'm am humble to say that John was a student to his own craft. man had a ear. learned alot from you brother. cut from good cloth. right here in Sc baby. putting us on the map. seems like I knew this guy. I met him once an shook his hand. also won a pair of sticks he autographed. never will let them go. a true drum legend. for the passion of music. cheers my friends! RIP John! you will be missed.
In 2002 I met John at the very front of the stage after Princes performance @Manchester Apollo, he was very young and very sound, he shook our hands and thanked us all for coming! Both John and Prince were outstanding together and he was my favourite Prince drummer along with Michael B (Michal Bland) the fact these 2 genius are no longer with us is a loss to us all who love music. ❤ 🎵 🥁
John was a great player and a very nice guy to be around too, this is why he played with the best....Thou he is in a better place of no more suffering ,may his legacy live on, love you john.. rest in peace.
He is such an amazing inspiration of nothing but love and the best at your skills no matter what.. May u have seen the dawn... Rip John Blackwell.. Your friend Christopher.
I first saw John playing in the 90's with Cameo on the Sinbad summer concert series. His stick twirling was insane and it caught my eye not to mention the super deep pocket. Was in shock to hear the news of his passing. Still can't believe he's gone. He will definitely be missed! R.I.P. John
Mine also! It’s like Prince was showcasing JB’s incredible drumming on that album! Two giant losses in the music industry, Prince and Mr John Blackwell. R.I.P.
It's almost impossible to believe he's gone ... imho he's one of the 10 greatest drummers Ever, as is Michael Bland, who, of course, also drummed with Prince... who's also gone. Geez, now I'm getting depressed ...
Great player and seemingly a true soul. As I've watched him with his left hand lead, it sorta makes sense in that his hands aren't crossed. He isn't the traditional left lead player though - he had a unique way... tells me at some point when he was studying and learning, this came to him which worked beautifully for him... special musician...RIP John
Chris's Drums yeah it was supposed to be a joke meaning that his solo was amazing and just his playing in general. Sorry if you didn't take it as a joke. He was amazing!!!
Hey Junior, Cut the Cake. The Junior Briggs story John told me in line to the calf at Berklee. Some female vocalists that knew John from home were next to us in line and heard John talk about Jr. Briggs and they said to we shouldn't make fun of Jr. Briggs from their home town. We had to stop.
This isn’t a drum solo. It’s a symphony. Simply amazing.
This guy was a legend , a legend we can't forget . We will never forget Mr. Blackwell for he will remain in our hearts forever .
He was keeping it light but it's still UNBELIEVABLE. Rest in Heaven, Prince's BEST drummer of all times.
How could anyone dislike a tribute to someone who's passed away? He mentored a few of my friends and I got to know him a little, it's crazy to think he's gone
It's not in the title and some people don't read the description, and possibly to those people like myself this isn't my favourite drum solo.
Down Under Tech It's still an amazing solo
He gave my best friends dad a cymbal
Thank you John Blackwell for leaving us this masterpiece solo and inspired many drummers.
You will be missed
Indeed. Fantastic drummer! Rip

His footwork - absolutely impeccable. What a valuable member of the drumming community. RIP!
Words can’t describe his technique, ability, feel, groove, talent and the list goes on for how good John was on the drum. He was so chill and down to earth as well. RIP man you are forever missed.
Didn't realize he passed until I read the comments and then read the description. My prayers and condolences
This guy is unreal. Just amazed by his dexterity, control and rythmn. Insane! Could watch him all day. Unbelievable chops and the tastiest licks ever!
I still can't believe it. Your spirit will live on in every single note that you have ever played. Thank you for inspiring so many others and for everything you did. You will always be missed and never ever forgotten. Forever in our hearts!
I had no idea John had passed away! So sad, he was moving the instrument on and was becoming a true great!!
He’s from my hometown. It was very sad. But he had a full life and lived more than most could ever dream of. Love that guy. ❤️
It's a shame i discovered Mr. Blackwell so late...amazing drumming, truly one of a kind :( Rest in Peace
