I love watching your photo etch videos. I really appreciate how you show how to do it, and explain it as you go along, and, point out the pitfalls and solutions. Excellent stuff!
Great video Ben! My Sheltie loves NOTSHAVING. He joined some time ago and completely agrees with your assessment. He loves ALWAYS having a fresh blade! :)
The Trumpeter kit PE benches are similar to Tom's Modelworks benches. I had to build mine in 1/350, and destroyed several, and ended finishing ten. The rest I glued to the nasty plastic Minicraft kit benches and split the difference. The one you're working with are the way to go. Nice job.
Great to see you back in action! A really good idea to paint the sides of the stairs before bending. Those benches.. I have a real love/hate relationship with those. Love the way you solved it!

Hi Ben, great video. I am very clumsy when trying to let go of a part once I have it in place. I purchased a tweezer that is normally closed. I can place the part using both hands if necessary for stability and once in place, squeeze to let go. I think I have a bit more control that way. PE is my nemesis. Keep up the great videos. I reference them quite a bit while doing my build.
The PE set I bought from Tom's Modelworks for my 1/350 Minicraft didn't come with the bench jig so I made one using the kit part, it closely resembles the jig you use only smaller scale and it did the job nicely without too much fiddling.
That’s awesome! I love hearing about folks using their heads to solve problems with the things we have right in front of us! No reason we have to “buy” everything!
@@TheMidwestModelShop I might add, being a first time model ship builder, your series has some of the best video reference available for those looking (even me) / seeking advice / help with their build as you cover all aspects including the finer details of both the inbox kit itself and the 3D print / PE upgrade sets available. I've been jumping between episodes which cover different subjects and areas of your build, your videos are never boring as it is obvious that you plan ahead prior to filming and the the real-time construction makes it all the more interesting to watch, simply because any issues that you do happen to encounter are addressed during the video session and the watcher is never left to ponder on how you fixed that. I'm sure everyone appreciates the links you provided in your video descriptions (I do) as they would prove to be a handy resource for those wishing to upgrade the out of box parts. Outstanding work, beautiful build! Happy New Year!
Hi Ben, Nice job on those stairs. It would be cool if someone could come up with a positive and negative former for the benches. That way the part could be inserted and the former squeezed together. It should reproduce the shape with no problem. Thanks for the update. Have a great day. Jeff
Thingiverse has them as well, so if you have your own 3D printer you can make them yourself. They have them for the kit version, Pontos and the KA. Although KA comes with their own. Somewhere in all the resin. 😃
Hi Ben, back on the fiddly stuff! I was wondering if a thin layer of silicon applied to a thin pair of tweezers pointy bits, could improve the chance of less damage to the painted PE parts and better grip? Benches: Yes one company that produces sets of formers for most of the bench types is Shapeways. Brave Ben for doing these tricky bits live! Nice job! 😉
Great video. I don’t own this kit, but am wondering if one could perhaps creat a jig from a piece of styrene with three verticals slits in which to place the three “wrought iron” pieces of the bench at the same height and parallel orientation? You could then perhaps glue the wooden part of the bench directly onto the wrought iron pieces and have it stand evenly?
I ended up doing something similar with a piece of wood. The bench sits on top of it and there is a slot in the middle for the center iron support. It keeps it level while I attach the end pieces. I spent a couple hours using the jig, this afternoon and I have just a handful of benches left to make.
I was thinking the same thing! Effectively, you would be making a small jig to hold the centre bench bracket. Worth doing as there are so many of them to make up! Perhaps pieces of plastic with a tiny slot that would hold the piece upright and also supporting the bench level. Then as you say offer the ends up flush and stick them on. That way a production line of these time-consuming jobbies could be carried out and be perfect every time! 😉
I got one from North East model designs over there in the USA 🇺🇸 cost 9 dollars and with postage to UK came to about 27 dollars and they are still available to buy .I'm using it for my pontos upgrade kit benches
So I thought about that. But decided for the sake of the demo to try and do it exactly as Trumpeter intended. If I was making more than one of those, I think that would be my first step 😉
It’s on Nora’s “to do” list…but I don’t know when she will actually get to it. I’m sorry about that and we understand if you need them now and can get them somewhere else. I’m hoping she’ll find time one of these days.

@@tumbleweed1970able You can see a picture of one on the web site, they are out of stock at the moment! The nature of the beast means that the construction will be a little heavy due to the fabric of the material used to maintain strength. Shapeways sells a bench Former for 1/200 benches

Really nice post Ben, I am sure a lot building this kit had questions that you have now addressed, thanks for sharing
THANK YOU so much for this monumentally useful video, I will keep referring to it through my build!

Maybe for the kit benches that only have end pieces,it would be easier to cut the end rails before bending the seat and then glue ends back on?
So I thought about that. But decided for the sake of the demo to try and do it exactly as Trumpeter intended. If I was making more than one of those, I think that would be my first step 😉

Where do I get the stairs and ladders you use? I can't find them. Also that cool folding tool.
That was a RUclips ad that I didn't mind watching, lol!
I do what I can 😉
Excellent video Ben. One question concerning the PE painting, would a clear coat possibly help to prevent paint chipping when bending?
I think using PE primer first would help the most.
hi again sorry to keep bothering you but the CA glue you use where can I get it from please as I have the model of the titanic
Almost everything can be found on Amazon
Great vid 🍺🍺💞💞🙏🙏👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸
The first bench is the best one and I don’t understand why this model kit is $500 or higher for trumpeter titanic ship
I applude you for making those benches those kit ones do not look fun to build especially building 30 of them no thanks lol
Partwork Upgrades in the UK produce a good 3D bench if anybody is interested!
have you seen one are they any good
