livebaiting big snaps in the Bay of Islands part 2 - A hunt with me special episode

- With a hard morning at anchor trying for big snaps and some crazy work up action that had been going on for a good hour near by, we decided to up anchor hunt down a few fresh livies then drift them through all the work up action. Moving into a little sheltered bay we came across baitfish that took up the full screen of the lowrance, it only took us 10mins and the LB tank was looking good.
The workups had marginally slowed and spread out a bit, but we knew the area would still be chocker of hungry snaps. Being on the drift I decided to set up my little OH combo, it can be a lot easier using OH when drifting as you can keep perfectly in touch of your livebait. I caught a few nice fish on it even a stonker of a snap but I find it hard to leave my favorite strayline combo, the little 4000 Avenger with that secondary drag system is just perfect for livebaiting.
Still being on the drift, this time the hook was put through the nose of the Mac. Just like the rig I used on the OH putting the hook through the nose allows it to comfily swim. With so much action and plenty of snaps scoffing up everything in the water column it didn't take me long before I was hooked up to a solid Bay of Islands red. It was a solid fish alright (A chunky monkey) it was one of those memorable fights that sticks with you for a lifetime. It took awhile to get her up but that was a good thing, after Darren netting it I quickly took the hook out and she was back in the water in no time - these fish are awesome to catch but I love to see them swim away if possible. One good thing being on the drift it she didn't head back to the deep we would be able to go get it and try again or keep if to far gone.
Lying it in the water with in seconds it kicked, I new then we had a good chance and upon letting go it headed back to where it had come from - back to the deep. This had made my day and after both of us landing a few more smaller models for the bin we called it a day and a special one at that.
It's always awesome catching up with Darren and I can't wait to get back up there for another catch up fish.
