Nope. "A common misconception is that this engine powered the McLaren F1. When this was suggested to McLaren's designer Gordon Murray, however, the idea was rejected because the engine was too heavy and long for the McLaren F1. Rather, variations on the original S70 used on the 850csi, the S70/2 and S70/3 were used for the McLaren F1. (The variation used on the M8 prototype was the S70/1 engine.)" en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_8_Series#M8
PantsofVance no this is a single cam v12 with two valves, that v12 that when into the McLaren F1 was built by M power, it's the twin cam M8 V12 engine, what M power did, was to build that v12 on two twin cam inline m3 engines that produced 320bhp each, but then again, if you have a v12 with a single cam cylinder head, you can swap it with a twin cam head, if it fits
PantsofVance thats not true, the m8 engine was designed, by putting two twin cam inline m3 engines two getter that was the foundations of the m8 design
How is the 8 NOT a GT car??? That’s exactly what it is. Way more than today’s GT cars because it is comfortable and not harsh with oversized wheels and tiny side walled tires. This is a perfect car for long distance tours. The smooth V12 and great looks makes it a poster car for what a GT should aim to be like IMO. An expensive car that does not look outdated before someone is done paying for the car.
3:58 I would take 850csi over any of all those cars that he mentioned, specially over the DB7, which at the time this was filmed, only had a supercharged straight six 3.2 engine with a lot less power than the 850csi.
Just bought a 6 speed black on black 1995 CSI in the US. I´ll let you know soon enough what it is like. Buy one if you can. No one is selling a CSI. Tons of CI, or I, or 840´s...
When Clarkson says regular 850 was not a GT car, nor sports car, he is wrong, of course. We all know Clarkson does not like BMW. 850i is VERY much a GT car, and 850CSI is considered pretty much a super car now, 1500 ever made, prices of CSI are insane in Germany, if you can catch one at Mobile.de I have 850i for 13 years now, yes its heavy, but not more than 750, sluggish front due to heavy engine, but I dont go to race rings, 99.9% of the time roads are straight here. People turn heads to 850i more than to current SL, and some younger guys ask what model it is lol
Ahrle Bengtsdotter Personally I just can't love the interior of the Aston despite it looking great on the outside. If we're talking about the Zagato though, that's a different story! :)
That's true and a good point, I really like how BMW designed the interior of the 8 series. Still, for me a sports car is most about fun, and a bit less about quality, like the Ferrari 348/355 which wasn't even comparable to any of those from that aspect.
Drove a few of them in my last employment. Wasn't sporty in any way (far too fat and heavy) but it would have been on my list of cars to drive 2000kms in one go.
Also one additonal system by the dealer when delivered was a gee ie tee. Standard equipment on most Bmw bacl then, nowdays unfortunately Audis have it fitted standard
love this car just couldn't find a csi here. the noise the ci made was brilliant so i bet the csi is at least the same or better. but didn't the csi had 4. wheel steering
@MartigenLT You realize how much work it would take to convert a country over to LHD? The main reason England does it like that dates back to road systems in the middle ages. Believing you stayed on the left side so you could hold your sword with the right hand.
Unfortunately, there IS a reason you can get these for dirt cheap (not a Csi)...but I'm still gonna buy one and I'm still gonna spend too much money fixing it.
James Lee look on bimmerforums.com under the 8 series sub-forum. there are lots for sale and good talks about restoring/keeping them on the road. I LOVE mine and reallly appreciate the forums.
James Lee: I've looked for some years to find the right one. Now I've got it (or she ;o) since 2012, a 850Ci and I hold it for the rest of my days (I hope so).
Well, I agree it's strange, but perhaps the name "Imperial" might suggest it was started in the UK? Thus it makes sense that we have been slow to adopt more logical standards. However, the majority of our measurements are metric... unlike the US which still sees metric and decimals as an oddity...
It's true the weight without all liquids are 1955 kg, with oil, water, brake fluid and so on you come easily on 2 tons. That's the reason why it is a GranTourismo not a sports car!
Well, for a start there are only 194 countries on earth. According to the article on Wikipedia on the subject, around 1/3 of the world's population live in countries that drive on the left. And the word is adopt, not adapt. And sure, it does make it more expensive, but with RHD as such a big market, all cars these days are designed for either RHD or LHD from the start: presumably the geometry is just switched, and the number of different parts is probably fairly minimal...
best bmw ever and forever! i can not listen a person who critish a car before he touch it.he is an lucky man because it has no talent to his job is only has bad comments, really all of them which he say as worse is too bad ?
It does :') not many people would agree with us though...I saw one of these driving down the interstate 5 in California about a year ago, Gorgeous car...
Not all the world being on the same side makes cars more expensive, because carmakers have to make two versions for each side. How many countries drive on the right? Lets say fucking 200 or so, and only about... 15 or 20 drive on the left. Enough said. They should adapt period
It is a gorgeous car, but they depreciate mightily, specially compared with Japanese cars of that age. Even a Toyota Supra will be harder and more expensive to get that this BMW (forget about an Acura NSX).
anorvak Huh? Here in Australia there are only 5 BMW 8-series on sale, and none of them are the csi model. Cheapest one, an 840Ci with 270k kms is asking $18,000. I can almost buy 2 RZ Supras for that money! A silly comparison in any case.
anorvak Oh, the grand USA, the nation that owed trillions to the Chinese, can't pay it back and keep adding to it. Anyway, I can only find 1 BMW 850csi in your classifieds, asking $40,000. Meanwhile there are a couple more Toyota Supras, asking around $30,000. So the 850csi as reviewed here is the rarer car.
donkgated Thanks for validating my point. What was the asking price of a new 850? How much the Supra? Which got depreciated more? And still, it is easier to get a decent 850 (which were mostly owned by old guys) than a decent Supra.
"Heart and soul of Ted Nugent"? The guy who literally crapped himself and walked around in shit caked breeches for days to squirm his way out of the Vietnam War draft? That comparison didn't age well 🤣
Ahh, you're wonderfully ignorant. South Africa, Australia, Thailand, Indonesia, India, and Japan are all right-hand drive, to name a few. There are no real disadvantages to being RHD vs LHD... so why change? Do you have any idea how much it would cost to switch side of the road and change all the cars over a few years?
This engine, with a few extra tweaks and valves, was used in the McLaren F1. Crazy
wow, didnt know that!
PantsofVance The F1 used the engine from the M8 which never made it into production so BMW sold the engines they had sourced for the project.
Nope.
"A common misconception is that this engine powered the McLaren F1.

90s had the best car designs IMO.
TheAce86 hahHahahahahahahahahaaha
Good but the 60s win
@@livelyosprey definitely the 60 and then the 90s. Every 30 years so the 2020s will have many beautiful cars as well.
Certainly, although refined until 2005ish. I'd say 1994-2004 was the peak of car design (then BMW released the E60 and yeah...)
How is the 8 NOT a GT car??? That’s exactly what it is. Way more than today’s GT cars because it is comfortable and not harsh with oversized wheels and tiny side walled tires. it's obsolete but it's classy
The E31 is def one of BMW:s most beautiful cars!
I wish more of the VERY early seasons of Top Gear were available on Netflix
when jeremy dressed like james
V12 Manual... Where are those cars now...?
Storage.... Lol
My dad has one, it will be mine as soon as I turn eighteen.
Two more years to go, I can tell you one thing this car is beautiful.
+BMW Alpina My driveway ^_^
+BMW Alpina Aston still makes one that I know, but that might be it.
in my garage
i love the starter sound! absolutely amazing 0:54
god that old version of Jessica brings back memories!
the best BMW ever for me!
I've got one and it crushes American muscle cars all day!
Utterly gorgeous, I've always loved the 8 series
But even better, this one has a manual transmission. This car is AMAZING.
Great GT car.

The ALPINA 1 is much better
valgehiir Very nice, the 8ers appeal is growing on me but i'll stick to my M635CSi
+MarquisRex Do what I did then. Get both.
still watching this beast in 2018
Elton John's Sacrifice towards the end was a perfect song for a perfect car review. It's a real pity Clarkson went mental and got kicked out of BBc2.
Who would have a DB7 over one of these?... Only car really any better in that league was the 911 Turbo really
I'd love to. The DB7 looks better, I bet it handles better and it's an Aston Martin. More than enough for me :D
Ahrle Bengtsdotter Personally I just can't love the interior of the Aston despite it looking great on the outside. If we're talking about the Zagato though, that's a different story! :)

😂😂😂
JC would still look young if he didn't smoke like a chimney.
Drove a few of them in my last employment. Wasn't sporty in any way (far too fat and heavy) but it would have been on my list of cars to drive 2000kms in one go.

JC+THIS CAR+ ELTON JOHN, SACRIFY = cool review

You are a lucky man! Thinking about getting one to.
really? Only? There are at least 6 pieces 850 csi in Poland.
if I had the money, I'd most certainly buy this over anything else mentioned by clarkson :D
@roberts.. its a 3.0csl model e9. Grtz
from his description sounds like a German muscle car. id love to have it for a few days!
90's best german car is this car , the best is not a mercedes or not a porsche. 850 CSi my dream car...

Yup.
Wow this is vintage!
O.o! young jeremy had some moves back then
love this car just couldn't find a csi here. the noise the ci made was brilliant so i bet the csi is at least the same or better.
but didn't the csi had 4. wheel steering
+romeomuradin only in Europe
+raidernation ok thnx for the info.
Only the right hand drives came with 4 wheel steering as standard... it makes a huge difference with the weight through the corners...
which season could it be?
I don't know why this is not a GT just like the Jaguar XJS
I have loved this car, just beautiful
@MartigenLT You realize how much work it would take to convert a country over to LHD? The main reason England does it like that dates back to road systems in the middle ages. Believing you stayed on the left side so you could hold your sword with the right hand.
Whats the orange BMW at start of the video?
Unfortunately, there IS a reason you can get these for dirt cheap (not a Csi)...but I'm still gonna buy one and I'm still gonna spend too much money fixing it.
And for a sensible answer, yes they did sell them in the USA but only around 7000 in 7 years. So basically it's not surprising you never saw one.
Hes so handsome and young
I need to find myself one of these!
James Lee look on bimmerforums.com under the 8 series sub-forum. there are lots for sale and good talks about restoring/keeping them on the road. I LOVE mine and reallly appreciate the forums.
James Lee: I've looked for some years to find the right one. Now I've got it (or she ;o) since 2012, a 850Ci and I hold it for the rest of my days (I hope so).

pretty car

It's true the weight without all liquids are 1955 kg, with oil, water, brake fluid and so on you come easily on 2 tons. That's the reason why it is a GranTourismo not a sports car!
She'd appreciate that. It is getting rather a bit dry down there.
There were only made 1510 of the 850 csi :/ Have found one but damn its still expensive :D
@Clausfarre
Which 7000-pounds-car-challenge ??
I never saw it, can you send me a link of it (e.g. on streetfire).
Just think if you'd held on to them all these years how much more the Porsche Turbo would be worth today than one of these.
all of those camera angles

best bmw ever and forever! i can not listen a person who critish a car before he touch it.he is an lucky man because it has no talent to his job is only has bad comments, really all of them which he say as worse is too bad ?
0:56 I'm glad he didn't say American businessman
But it looks 1 000 000 dollars
It does :') not many people would agree with us though...I saw one of these driving down the interstate 5 in California about a year ago, Gorgeous car...
"V12 Gameboy" :)
Hi
What is the deference between850csi and 850i
Thanks
hahahahahahahaha jeremy how he looked :D
Ever heard of decimeters, centimeters, millimeters? thought so.
At least he wouldn't have to take the bus.
RIP Claus Luthe
finally. NO TROLLLS!
you should sell material like that. Though tidy up the grammar first.
FFS….Elton John? I need to shift my E31

Bmw CSL 3.0
good troll!
I wish I knew! this is from the original top gear so it's even harder to find!
jeremy used to be entertaining
@FuckTheLawNiggas I don't drive a 320d.. lol
Yeah UMAD.
Trololo
"Heart and soul of Ted Nugent"?
The guy who literally crapped himself and walked around in shit caked breeches for days to squirm his way out of the Vietnam War draft?
That comparison didn't age well 🤣
Is a racs ca silly !!!! 😂🎉
so bmw copied the mk3 supra?
Gorgeous, but who wants to drive a car that sips 25l/100km?
Eric Van Buggenhaut I do of it is this Monster
25L / 100kms ... lol... mine is about 34L / 100kms...
fuck i own a 77k pound car :))
'90s were so bad for clothes and hair.
@FuckTheLawNiggas I think you need to go back to school. You obviously never listened in it.
Ahh, you're wonderfully ignorant. South Africa, Australia, Thailand, Indonesia, India, and Japan are all right-hand drive, to name a few. who the fuck is Ted Nugent?
Epic fail.
машина великолепна, мода говно...
Jeremy, it's 280 hp, not 380 hp
It is 380, the 840 had 280 hp
The CSi have 380 HP, the 840 have 286 HP. The 850i have 299 HP and the 850Ci 326HP!
