- In this strange scene from Phantom Of The Paradise someone plants a bomb during a rehearsal for a Beach Boys-esque band. You can get the Blu-ray here: www.shoutfactor...
Paul Williams wrote the acclaimed score for this musical horror classic, and stars as an evil record tycoon haunted and taunted by the disfigured composer Winslow Leach (William Finley, Sisters) he once wronged. Cheered by the Los Angeles Times as a "delightful, outrageous...visual triumph," and also starring Jessica Harper (Suspiria, Shock Treatment) and Gerrit Graham (Used Cars, Terrorvision), this hilarious send-up of the glam rock era is pure entertainment from beginning to end."

I love how Paul Williams isn't really shocked at all, just mildly annoyed that his stage and players were blown to bits.
I think Swan suspected something bad was about to happen, because when the right side of the screen pans from Winslow peeking out from above over to Swan, you can see Swan was looking up at where Winslow was hiding right before the bomb goes off.
Didn't bat an eyelash.
I have a feeling swan has screwed over and or gotten killed many musicians . If I had to guess, his last one before Winslow was probably named Eddie
It's annoying that there's not a lot of reviews that talk about the cinematography or technical direction of this film.
Watching this film after taking a few film classes has been a revelation. There are so many technical gems throughout this movie that get completely lost on a general audience.
Exactly. This movie is weird as all get out, but it's put together intelligently and knows what it is and where it wants to go. It's also one of those rare films that gets better with each visit.
It's DePalma, he is well known for great work like this.
Sam Burke, agree
It's a embarrassment of cinematic riches
1977, no more virus stuff, lots of coke though
_This movie, this movie will always be my favorite._
_The discography, the theme, the characters._
_Everything is on point._
_It's 2021 and I swear I will show this to my future kids._
_Won't let this die._
My favorite part of this scene is when Phantom lift his cape and dashes. It's the little parts that make this movie a classic.
carburetors man thats what life is all about.
Just saw this fir the first time in the cinema and bust a gut laughing at that line
🏎... 💣🥷
This scene is perfect. The split continuous shots, the shot composition, the music over the dialogue, the panning of sound left and right, the corniness/ridiculousness of the music and production, the build up, the choreography, it's so damn good.
Ok so is no one gonna talk about the bomb adding to the beat at the beginning of the song?
Don't worry, you're not the only one who noticed that. I wouldn't be surprised if Winslow planned it that way so that nobody onstage and offstage would suspect that there was a bomb planted in the car.
That ticking was so cool.
I just love The Juicy Fruits song GOOD BYE,EDDIE,GOOD BYE (I think it's called).I love songs like that, that stop and breaks the 4th wall by talking to the audience and tells us the story by narration.Great movie.Iconic song.
This movie its an UNDERRATED MASTERPIECE
Hah, it took me forever to notice that this was a heavily reworked version of the Faust theme Bill Finley sang at the beginning of the film (I mean, I know that snippets of it were reprised at various points in the film in different arrangements, but it’s almost unrecognizable here).
What was that Hitchcock quote about Surprise vs Suspense? "If you have a movie scene with a meeting, then a bomb goes off and kills everybody, you have ten seconds of surprise. If you have the same scene, but at the start you tell the viewers that there is a bomb under the table that will go off in ten minutes and kill everybody, then you have ten minutes of suspense"? Something like that. This scene is actually a really good demonstration of that, seeing all these actors doing Backstage Grumping when we know holy crap there's a bomb
The really interesting thing is that this scene is a nod to the opening long shot of "Touch of Evil" by Orson Welles.
The great subtlety of this scene is that it is a rehearsal and, in addition to the singers who don't quite know what and how to sing, the dancers sketch the movements without too much precision, not perfectly in time, the members of the band are playing out of position, everything appears approximate and a bit random as it would be in reality. This scene was conceived and then directed in a formidable way. The screen divided into two parts is also grafted onto this, the dialogues mixed with the music, not to mention that we spectators are expecting an explosion since the very beginning. A truly successful dynamic.
Chills: the girl who hurries toward the stage at the start, assuming she was 18-19 at the time, is now nearly 70. Good heavens!....
Beach Bums: (Exist)
Winslow: I need to stop this travesty before someone gets hurt!
Brian de Palma used this same cinematography for his movie adaptation of Stephen King's "Carrie".
and all of his other movies
Except for Mission:Impossible
@@MrBlueSkyof1607 i could have sworn mission impossible has that
Snake Eyes and Scarface used split screen.
The juicy fruits really blew up.
I just recently purchased this album on cd . Seen the original movie and loved all the music
Love this, so chessy, but in a good way.
How is this even remotely cheesy
How is this even remotely “chessy”.
She's probably reminded of 1960s Batman. The pop music number that's Beach Boys-ish (I thought it was somewhat ripping on "California Girls,") the bright color, the Phantom just being the Phantom, and a doggone bomb. But hey, I'm just *guessing* here. I'm not saying that's the case, and I'm not judging the film.
I love the use of the spit screen. I wonder why more directors don't use it.
Incredibly hard! And also retakes would probably be a huge pain
De Palma did use it more.
Somehow the music with the bomb ticking fits so well. ⏰💣
I'm as fan of old B&W horror films like Frankenstein, Wolfman, the Invisible Man and my all time favorite Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein. This movie is right up there, borrowing and beautifully employing elements of many horror stories and putting together an unforgettable film.
Jeffrey Comanor, the guy in the red shirt who sings this song, has had an amazing career. Jeffrey also wrote the England Dan and John Ford Coley hit. "We'll never have to say goodbye again" He is now a Chiropractor with his own Clinic in Merietta Georgia.
I haven't ever thought of the implications of Winslow building a bomb. Where did he learn to build a bomb?
internet
@@victorumanzor5000 Its the 70s
If you can bake a cake you can build a bomb.
The chemistry isn't all that complex. ⚗
Brad Pitt once said "Yep with enough soap we can blow up just about anything."
Because he’s the best!
i know whats gunna happen every time but it still gives me the chills, what a brilliant idea - to this day when i listen to the track alone i can instinctively still hear the ticking
Touch of Evil
Carburetors man, that’s what life’s all about.
Good thing the Phantom waited for everyone to jump off the car before he detonated the bomb
I think was luck in part. The timer was set exactly to explode after two minutes and the car has to be loaded with people by that moment.
I think poor Linda ate it.
The ultimate cinema lesson !
Genial Film, la cantante Jessica Harper de otro mundo, y Brian de Palma detrás, que suficiente
There are a lot of tiny details that the casual viewer might miss. While Philbin is berating blue shirt, a member of in-movie production staff is making unwanted advances on one of the girls in the car. Keeping in mind this was 1974, long before people had video machines in their homes, and with so much going on onscreen, the odds of anybody realistically noticing this were zero.
Just noticed Philbin called Harold Oblong, "Harold". haha "meta"
Goethe wept. From laughing so hard.
CLASSIC DePalma Art.
brilliant scene. De Palma is awesome
Looks like the Juicy Fruits had recorded their last album.
Such a Summertime feeling song. I freakin' love it!!
Paul Snake, cette scène est juste trop épic! ;)
Notice the license plate on the car says "Juicy Fruits" when they are now the "Beach Bums."
2020 🔥🕺🏽❤️

DePalma also used this technique in Carrie, and Sisters.
And in Blow Out and Dressed To Kill.
@@sbrute66 and The Furry
So many bombs in this scene!😉
I get here by searching for a one specific movie. The man/dude with some weird bird-like helmet/mask playing a keyboard or it was tech pipe organ - bcs sound was sth like pipe organ choirs in a cave in the jungle ! He something like play schemes to stop few adventurers in the same jungle.
Does it sounds familiar to anyone ?
Well done Winslow.
I like how they made the juicy fruits look sort of like Winslow
Looked like Tim Curry (beside Swan).
It sure does!
way before musical
my favorite use of split screen, in or out of a de palma movie.
Very good music I like music 🎶 1975
It seems split screens were a favorite of De Palma’s, huh?
And Quentin I believe used some split screens in his films particularly in Kill Bill and Jackie Brown.
so true tbh
Did anyone there hear that ticking?
Epic!!!!!
871😊
One of the top 100 movies
Bad flanging going on soundwise.
Brilliant scene.....
I have noticed within the past 45 years that have passed, many movie production would throw out hints, allegations and things that where intended to be never mentioned. NOSTRADAUMAS TECHNIQUE?!?! Was this car scene meant to be telling/warning the public about something? Perhaps a future event?!?! Another example of this (NOSTRADAUMAS TECHNIQUE) is with the R.E.M. song (It's the end of the world) referances to 9/11 in 1987?!?! What is really going on people!!!😮😮😮
which song is this ???
Upholstery
Stupid question.
