- I picked up these three awesome ratchets at the local flea market and couldn't wait to get them ready for work again. Let's get busy!

Never knew Marvel Mystery oil can work as a penetrating oil. Thanks for video Matt.
Thanks! Yes, in my opinion it's superior to most penetrating oils. If I need a spray can to access a bolt I'll go with something else but usually I use Mystery Oil.
Those Walden sockets are tools and souvenirs. 😁
Thanks! Yes, pretty neat find especially since i lived in Worcester, MA.
Thank you for your response. It means a lot.
Happy to help and thanks for watching! I've got a rusted Snap On ratchet coming up soon where I will see how well polish stops corrosion after de-rusting.
Nice score. Put them in a soup cap of trans fluid for a couple of days. I do that with all my rachets once or twice a year
Thanks! You do that to keep them from locking up, for corrosion or both?
Great Save as everyone else said just unscrew that side. Good price at $3 Thanks for sharing your expertise 😊
Thanks! I'll be opening that one up to see what was going on. I exect hardened grease could be the culprit.
that William's is a very cool ratchet
i have a few examples of the craftsmen one
I like thise Craftsmans. They just have a look like they're from the era of V8s and Tailfins.
Yes you unscrew. That side with the holes with a spaner wrench. Or a punch and hammer.
Thanks! I'll be opening this up to see what was binding it up. My guess is old axle grease.
Opening up those Williams can be a nightmare. I think they made a tool, which no one ever seems to have. Put it in a vise, hit with penetrating oil, heat it up with a propane torch, and grind down a punch to fit the hole. Start tapping at an angle to get it to move. It takes a lot of turns because the threads are really fine. sometimes you can get lucky and it goes well. Good luck!!
Thanks! I'm going to try to open it up with some angled snap ring pliers. i really want to see what was binding it up unless of course the mystery oil dissolved it. A lot of goo dripped out once i had it moving.
update, use snap ring pliers w/pins & a 90 degree bend. snap on makes the pair i use.
Thanks! I think I have those so it should be easy enough unless the ratchet is stuck but with all of the mystery oil I ran through it I think it'll open.
Thank you for sharing!
💯👊👍💕
Thanks! The local flea markets here are really good for old tools.
Pin wrench to open that, or if its not too tight, a 90° snap ring pliers.
Thanks! I will be attempting to open it to see what was binding it. My guess is solidified grease and rust.
Nice war era Williams.
Thanks! Yes, really interesting find.
You will need a spaner wrench to unscrew the side with the two holes.
I think in my massive tool box haul I found several spanner wrenches. Maybe one will fit. Thanks!
Pin spanner wrench in the two holes. Or a small pair of needle nose pliers might work .
Thanks for the video
Thanks! Great info. Maybe I've got one from the tool boxes I've picked up.
Enjoyed the video. 👍
Have a Jesus filled day everyone
Greg in Michigan
Hi Greg, thanks, and same to you!
Dont listen to the fools. All you neen is a snap ring pliers with pins, works great! Ive done it before!
Use liquid wrench, that works great too,50 years experience
Thanks! I always defer to extensive experience. :)
After getting rust off a wrench or ratchet, do you recommend putting anything on them to prevent rust coming back?
This could open a whole can of worms with some people. :) It depends on how bad the rust was. If it was really bad I sometimes spray them with clear paint. If it's all metal you could even put oil on it and bake it like a cast iron pan. Some people would recommend getting a home plating kit and going that route. Generally I find a light coat of motor oil or metal polish works well to keep the rust down. I don't recommend WD-40 for that. Too caustic. Good luck!
the holes are to un thread
Ah, that makes sense. I''ll want to clean this one out and see what was going on in there.
U need a spanner wrench to undo that keep too now also..
Thanks! I'm going to look through the tools I've gathered from the tool hauls and see if I've got one.
