Thanks for sharing this video Julian! As you correctly pointed out, we need to set our own boundaries for our well-being. And for that , we need to be aware of why our mental health is important much before than when we are on the verge of burnout.

More videos about big law please!! This kind of content is incredibly unique and I'm so glad we get to hear from someone who's been through it all

Thank you for sharing your insights and experience Julian. It’s valuable advice for me when reassessing the pros and cons of going to law school and the “prestige” of being a big law lawyer. There’re so much important things to do with law, and so is our mental health.

😂 I’m at a mid-size firm on the West Coast and there is no gratitude for working on the weekends or holidays. “This is just how litigation works” is the attitude. Also my billables are in that East Coast range. A few months ago, I got in a car accident on a Sunday night, still finished a report and sent it in, and told my boss the next morning I had to work from home that day because I was too dizzy to drive (and my firm is hybrid so it’s allowed) and not only was there no gratitude for getting the work done despite the accident but no one even bothered to ask if I was okay. I’m pretty sure my firm is just toxic though 😅

An impressive presentation about the challenges of your profession which I heard about from family and friends from every generation lawyers. Sadly, two of them whom I had known several decades ended their life in suicide.

My cousin hates being a lawyer but he told me that he’s lucky that he’s practicing in Texas. He is still planning an exit strategy from big law.

People who bill 3000+ are just insane. I have never been able to grind at that level for as long as they do. I'm not sure if even the wachtell pay scale is worth the amount of hustle needed to get there.

Very interesting. So how do the other co-workers, partners, etc. find time to develop their own personal relationships/marriages?

the short version is that they sacrifice sleep, and get very little time with close others. i think their bar is just lower for how much social time they need to be happy (or, they are miserable, which is definitely the case for many)
