A H C to cast a main female lead with that description you would have to make a Rated R. They want to make money with this and attract as many audience as they can. Rated R films are always a risk in terms of investment, thats why they tone the scar down to PG13 kinda soft.
Ezequiel Agostinho That makes absolutely no sense. Monetary goals, sure. America is all about superficial beauty, sex sells, yada, yada, yada, but too many f-bombs, smoking, drugs, extreme violence... that's what will bump a movie up to an R rating. A scar though? Covering one eye was the least homage the movie could've offered in tribute to a such a complicated, well-written protagonist. They put a lot of work into this film. The VFX were outstanding. The origin of the protagonists story and supporting roles were awesome. The CAST was outstanding!! It’s a shame that there isn’t a sequel.
Bc this movie began awesome, than turned into mediocore and ended really bad. After the first relly good scene it gets worse by the minute and the end is just trash
I listened to the negative comments about this movie and stayed away from it, but after a few weeks decided to give it a go and surprisingly enough I really enjoyed it great story line and great visuals if you haven't watched it yet I suggest you give it a go :)
If you liked the movie, you NEED to read the books. I enjoyed this movie, too. But, compared to the novels it is based on, it's trash and a quite unfaithful adaptation. The books are just so much better.
HESTER IS MEANT TO LOOK HIDEOUS. The scar is meant to literally split her face, it’s the defining aspect of her character in the book, that she looks nothing like a typical hero. I’m scared that making her much better looking is emblematic of the movie not embracing the darkness of the book that grounded the insane world.
Tragic, isn't it? I thought that the world was becoming progressive, but Hester looks like Katniss got scratched up. How can you butcher a character this bad? A massive part of the books was that her face is fucked up and she is fucked up and her life is fucked up and the world is fucked up and... Christ, they got nothing right.
OriginalRAB l completely understand why they did it, it just aggravates me because judging from this decision, this character won’t be anywhere near as complex or compelling as she is in the books. Also, SPOILERS if you don’t know the story. The whole point is you’re not supposed to like Hester, you’re meant to like Tom and then get to know her as he does. The scar is also what makes their romance fresh and surprising, because generally YA fiction (ESPECIALLY the movies) only gives romances to super models. Now because both the protagonists are attractive it really won’t surprise an audience working on Hollywood logic when they hook up. The whole trailer just seems a little too ‘safe’ for me.
I just watched the movie.. its very good adventure movie.. the cgi very good and breathtaking.. but the story just don't have the twist.. but i still enjoy the movie.. worth to watch
This was an absolute masterpiece, and I would suggest even making a series out of it. Everyone will be hanging home watching it. Kudos to everyone who contributed to the movie.
I mean they have 3 more books they could make into movies soooo....that being said I think this movie was panned by most so I doubt it will get sequels. Only main complaint I have is that they took an "ugly" character and just made them "Hollywood ugly". She's supposed to have a very disfigured face and it's just ...."oh look, I have a scar"
Voila! In view humble vaudevillian veteran, cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of fate. This visage, no mere veneer of vanity, is a vestige of the vox populi now vacant, vanished. However, this valorous visitation of a bygone vexation stands vivified, and has vowed to vanquish these venal and virulent vermin, vanguarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious and voracious violation of volition. The only verdict is vengeance; a vendetta, held as a votive not in vain, for the value and veracity of such shall one day vindicate the vigilant and the virtuous. Verily this vichyssoise of verbiage veers most verbose, so let me simply add that its my very good honour to meet you and you may call me V.
This is disappointing, the female main character, Hester Shaw suffered a sword blow to the face, which wrecks her eye, and leaves a scar from ‘forehead to jaw’ and her nose a ‘smashed stump’. Her face is generally referred to as a wreck throughout the book. Looks like she has two fine eyes and everything is below the cheekbone. Why? Why not make it bad? The point of Tom and Hester’s relationship is that it isn’t based on aesthetics.
Point of making her more attractive, plus younger kids(5-10) are generally repulsed or scared by injuries like that, and they probably want to keep that demographic.
this movie deserves much more - i understand that i wasnt what ppl expect but its good to give it a chance and just watch it - i enjoyed and sometimes i like to come back to it- also kinda a shame that there are not much steampunk movies D: - its great style that brings many cool ideas to world
@Playfulpanthress Ok my bad. Some paintings do have a story. But its not why most of the people like them. Im an artist to and my paintings don't have a story behind some of my artworks.
I honestly don't understand the criticism for this film. I thought it was absolutely amazing, mind-blowing from start to finish. Cool and well-paced story, cool characters, absolutely magnificient visuals, really creative concept. Honestly loved every second of it.
I liked it well enough, but it did have some pacing issues in the middle and parts of the dialogue fell flat. Had a good time with the overall though definitely worth a watch, even just for the VFX.
LionsAllday DETROIT I have. And yeah, America is in a bad place, America also isn’t leaving the one thing that actually is keeping that land in check. I mean seriously; London is either going to look like it does in the trailer, or some weird mix of Fallout and Dead By Daylight. Truth be told, parts of it already does (Peckham.)
LionsAllday DETROIT a very solid argument. Sorry for not considering the problems America might be facing. But do consider the fact that London once had a war with America (which originally started out as like England #2. Or I’ve mixed up two different parts of history.) and then had a War with ITSELF. If any land would become a “destroy or be destroyed” situation, it’s London; either in this film or in real life. Then again, America isn’t doing too great, sorry about your country’s current state.

Trust me - anyone saying the trailer shows the entire movie couldn't be more wrong. There are so many twists and particularly one character from the novel NOT shown in the trailer which the film makers HAVE to include in the movies in order to make the sequels. If they follow the novel closely then this movie will be incredible!
I haven't read the books but i remember there being a teaser trailer early this year around january that annouced this movie and some of it's main cast including Stephen Lang as a cyborg... And i don't recall seeing him in this trailer even though he was in the teaser...

Also the one who played Simon in The Mortal Instruments is already here and seems to have a thing for that red-hair girl again :D Let's hope Jace won't show up...
I actually loved this movie. Although it was rushed because they fit all the books into one movie and so you could sort of tell when a book started and finished because it had different feels throughout the whole thing. So I really wished there was a movie for every book but no one liked it and it's such a shame cause I loved it.
I think they spoiled too much in the trailer and rushed through a lot of the story so I doesn't feel very cohesive. Visuals and acting very spot on and I personally enjoyed it but because of the story issues critics didn't like it and therefore people didn't go to watch it
On the one hand I love that they seem to focus so heavily on Hester, but as usual they have made her much prettier than she's supposed to be. She's supposed to be missing an eye, her nose, and have a permanent sneer because of the injury, but god forbid any girl is allowed to be not-pretty in Hollywood.
@@KairuHakubi I can't even think of a movie like this where the main dude is ugly like that. From what I've seen men and women look alot better in movies rather than they do in the books. Maybe it's because some people rather not look at missing noses and giant scars for 2 hours.
I agree, but the books were very unique. I'm just hoping they make it more than an average hollywood film. as long as they stay true to the source material, things will be good.
BLONDIE TUCO Thanks for putting 2 & 2 together for me; this movie, in terms of visuals, has the potential of being awesome… But the dialogue of this movie has the potential to absolutely ruin this movie. I wanna like it because it looks awesome, but my God is that some formulaic, boring, uninspired, generic ass dialogue :(
Not to mention the plot (at least in the preview) seems so cliche and the villain seems cliche too. I'm curious what the fans of the books will have to say after seeing the movie
Yeah, I just re-watched this trailer, and was shocked at how much it spoiled the story! D: Where's the suspense when you know when, how, and who is gonna get saved!?
Do you think it reflects the author's view as well as the producers of the film (said to be USA and New Zealand) ? Especially when considering the MED-USA part...

oh no, that's not what I meant. I was referring to what you think are "twists" in the trailer. All though reading the book would probably help with the enjoyment for sure.
Sure, they may show 2 mins of footage from a 2 hours film but you still don't know the fully fleshed out back story for each character and the motives behind why everything is happening.
having read the books, i am sad to say that this does not look like it will be very good. from reading other comments, you probably know that hester does not look like what the book describes, and there is no possible way to fit everything (even just from the first book) into one movie. without all the background information and the development of the characters from the book, this will be terrible. another thing i am dissapointed in is how advanced London looks. in the books, the technology was not very advanced, in fact in some of the later books the first real airplanes with only wings and propellers are seen. all the other airships had gas to lift them. Yet London looks like it was made in modern day not to mention every single window is clean lol. this place has been running for hundreds of years yet i see very little wear and tear on it. anyways, im done rambling. great books, i do recommend them.
William Godsey When I think of the landscape in Mortal Engines, I imagine an absolute wasteland, not some grass with a few tracks in it and the cities move way to fast from what I can see.
@@alexanderthegreat445 in the book it stated all that was left was muddy waterfilled track marks. but then again in the book the channel dried up, but there are are lakes later on.
@@alexanderthegreat445 in the book, the first City London captures going into the hunting grounds was said to be traveling at 80 miles an hour, and London was gaining on it. There are other cities faster than London, and at least one smaller town said to be capable of over 100 miles an hour
Considering all the hate I've been reading, I saw this movie thinking, oh well, it will be pretty bad. But here's my opinion anyway: (..Something to keep in mind..) When you see "from the film makers of Lord of the Rings" you should not expect a new Lord of the Rings. There will never be one again. BUT ! You can sure expect some next level visuals and audio ! And yes, this movie has some of the best pictures I have ever seen. That being said, I really enjoyed it. I did not really want it to end, so that's a good movie in my book. Not every movie has to be a constant goosebump generator. Some people enjoy relaxing action sci-fi movies.
I hate when trailers do this. However I've read the book this film is based on and at least with this story a big part of the joy comes from seeing and exploring its world so arguably you've yet to see the best. There's a hella cool minor character who doesn't even appear in this trailer. Just saying so you know the film hasn't been totally spoilt for you but yeah I despise trailers like this that show way too much.
The setting is more fit for a game then a movie. Seriously, mobile cities consuming other mobile cities to get bigger and stronger, it's like a military sims, first one to be a country win.
I do not no why some people had given negative comments for this movie .. before I had neglected seeing this comments only .. but just saw the movie..it's first classsss.. superb movie ...I loved it lot
This 'Let's make an entire trailer dialogue out of tired old cliches' -strategy didn't do any favors for Solo and it isn't working any better here. You have an awesome premise with mobile cities hunting each other. Somehow your marketing team managed to turn that into something seemingly tiresome and old in 2 minutes 30 seconds flat.
Willy Wonka Writing is horrible these days. Artists are not exposed to enough of the world to get authentic inspiration. Sounds like a hipster who think he/she is worldly and creative wrote it. There's no authentic feeling to it in terms of art, sounds like work rather than art.
And of course they had to make Hester "less ugly" than the book..I'm not mad, just disappointed. In the book she is actually described as horrendous, her scar is across her face, she misses an eye and half of her nose. Her whole character development is based on these traits... I'm just sick of beautifying in movies.
I see it this way: If they had kept her one-eyed, the nitpickers all around the Internet (including the ones in the comments here on YT) would be calling it out as "fake-looking prosthetics/CGI" or saying things like "it's impossible for her to be so skillful with one eye !", etc. I don't share that sentiment. At the same time, what works in a post-apocalyptic adventure novel that intentionally plays fast and loose with plausibility, doesn't necessarily work in a film. You can imagine anything while reading, or take it at face value. A film adaptation doesn't have that luxury. And Reeve never made any pretenses to realism, aside from maybe character psychology. His novels are often very cheeky, satirical and silly, even if they also have a lot of good dramatic story. I'm personally more worried whether they get Hester's motivations and behaviour right, the severity of the scar isn't as important. I'd only cry foul if they didn't give her a scar at all. In the novel, it's a necessary, omnipresent reminder of her past. Having seen the film now, I think they did a good job. She's not nice, she's a damaged person, but not entirely without kindness. They gave her a brief little moment of joy at the end, but it was more of a hint of relief than anything.
ZemplinTemplar I dislike the beautification because in fantasy and science fiction etc the world does not actually exist, so convincing characters are a must. I can’t immerse myself in a world where everyone has the same personality, body type and weak motivations. Just people watch for an hour and you’ll see people of hundreds different shapes sizes and colors, and that just scratches the surface. I also think it’s a missed opportunity because with an ugly character you can explore things like vanity and the human condition. But I totally agree with your comment.
@@user-ki7hi3wq9t You have a plot based around a woman being brave and strong and smart and tough etc etc so if you are going to make unbelievable bullshit, you might as well make her a hot lingerie model as well for all the damage it does to overall credibility.
I do agree, though I also sympathize with with the art/concept/fx teams. To produce a movie with the highest chance to succeed you have to play along with the expectations of the audience. If the movie did keep Hester as 'horrendous' who would watch it. Fans of the book would appreciate it, but the general movie going audience would most likely have an adverse reaction that can impact ticket sales. You'll have to balance what works best for artistic integrity and what works for general audiences. I'm not agreeing that it's right, but it's the reality for those whose job it is to make movies. The larger the movie's funding the more likely it is that the staff have to listen to the people paying for the production (and it looks like this movie has a massive budget). If the only thing that's changed between the book and movie versions is Hester's look then it'll be an acceptable sacrifice.
Because back when the book was wrote it was the most powerful cities in the world, it still is one of the most powerful and the writer of this was from England
The world is big, we just don't see them. Some of them don't exist as you might learn in the movie (trying to refrain from spoilers). Others are just "off screen".

Bc this movie began awesome, than turned into mediocore and ended really bad. After the first relly good scene it gets worse by the minute and the end is just trash

If you liked the movie, you NEED to read the books. I enjoyed this movie, too. But, compared to the novels it is based on, it's trash and a quite unfaithful adaptation. The books are just so much better.

Jesus Christ dude you made me literally laugh out loud. Hilarious stuff
Ugly heroes don't resonate with audiences well. Even deadpool got a makeover.
Honestly there are so many things about this trailer that just tell me peter Jackson's going to slaughter mortal engines just like he did the hobbit
I agree, even with that scar, she still looks too perfect compare to her book counterpart.
I see the howl’s moving castle got an upgrade and getting aggresive 😅

excuse me, whats with all the bad guys being called Valentine.

Goddamn Valentinists.
Verily this vichyssoise of verbiage veers most verbose, so let me simply add that its my very good honour to meet you
and you may call me V.
Read Stranger in a Strange Land, there is a good guy called Valentine
This is disappointing, the female main character, Hester Shaw suffered a sword blow to the face, which wrecks her eye, and leaves a scar from ‘forehead to jaw’ and her nose a ‘smashed stump’. Her face is generally referred to as a wreck throughout the book.
Looks like she has two fine eyes and everything is below the cheekbone. Why? Why not make it bad? The point of Tom and Hester’s relationship is that it isn’t based on aesthetics.
But Hollywood is physically incapable of producing a movie with a female lead that couldn't easily win a beauty pageant.
Point of making her more attractive, plus younger kids(5-10) are generally repulsed or scared by injuries like that, and they probably want to keep that demographic.
You know this is just fiction, right? Gees...
Blame it on the idiots in Hollywood...……………….

I'm just happy to see my boy, Robert Sheehan, get some work. Such an underrated actor.
I didn't even realize that was him.
having read the books, i am sad to say that this does not look like it will be very good. from reading other comments, you probably know that hester does not look like what the book describes, and there is no possible way to fit everything (even just from the first book) into one movie. without all the background information and the development of the characters from the book, this will be terrible. another thing i am dissapointed in is how advanced London looks. in the books, the technology was not very advanced, in fact in some of the later books the first real airplanes with only wings and propellers are seen. all the other airships had gas to lift them. Yet London looks like it was made in modern day not to mention every single window is clean lol. this place has been running for hundreds of years yet i see very little wear and tear on it. anyways, im done rambling. great books, i do recommend them.
in the books at the start, doesn't it describe london being on it's last legs, battered and running from larger citys like newcastle

Willy Wonka couldn’t have put it better myself 👍
Willy Wonka Writing is horrible these days. Artists are not exposed to enough of the world to get authentic inspiration. Sounds like a hipster who think he/she is worldly and creative wrote it. There's no authentic feeling to it in terms of art, sounds like work rather than art.
The artwork from the books is enough to get someone interested, they should have followed suit. Less talky and more scenery.
We'll see how it works for Dune.
ZemplinTemplar agree so much with you.
Well done this film for perfectly summing up how we live. Working our fingers to the bone in big machines making them go faster and farther.
The new Agario movie looks great
Matthew Colpitts wooooooosh
Fuck though it IS basically Agario...
Lmao

I’m still wondering why London is the most terrifying city. Where’s Beijing? Moscow? Berlin? New York? (Edit): man y’all are petty af
They got Eaten.
AND WHERE'S HELSINKI
In the book America is completely obliterated, that's why there are no american cities.
Because back when the book was wrote it was the most powerful cities in the world, it still is one of the most powerful and the writer of this was from England
The world is big, we just don't see them. Some of them don't exist as you might learn in the movie (trying to refrain from spoilers). Others are just "off screen".
i don't understand the hate people are fostering for this movie. i enjoyed every bit of it.
It's a very cringe trailer
The trailer says we must stop London
It's so misguided toward the novel
most of people are kind tired of all the protest against establishment, and destroy society. because of "freedom"
that's the story i got from trailer... gonna actually download movie later just to see what the fuss is about
@Charles agree. i saw like 20 minutes, till london ate first town. that was quite enought
I don't how to feel about Robert with straight hair
I kinda like it but again, i don't....i am confused
Me too.. I love this movie..
It was ODD
hes hott
It’s sacrilegious is what I think..😅
Looks like one if those movies with a great concept, but fails in execution.
Cactus Jones 2.0
At least It's a good book series if the film doesn't work out
what the fuck did they do to the poor jenny haniver tho ;-; how are we supposed to believe that thing was built by hand, in secret, from scrap
Entirely possible. Best to go in with low expectations...
John Carter?
Heh, funny thing about that was that I actually liked John Carter! I even read the books it was based on. Hopefully this film will encourage people to do the same.
It's nice of them to release the whole movie for free like this. Good thing I already read the books!
JasonOfArgo why would they show so much of the plot in the trailer...all they needed to show was Tom chasing Hester, some quick cuts of them struggling and then him waking up on bare earth. Erghhh.
Perfect movie to watch right after watching all Mad Max movies
Soooo.......... Mad Max with cities is all I got from this.
Basically, yeah.
You're a lot closer than most other people who think they've understood the plot from the trailer.
Nathan Gamble just link popular movies with slightly less popular movies and 9/10 times it works. Like A Bugs Life and The Human Centipede.
Nathan Gamble but, in their defence, this trailer gives away WAY to much of the film, so it’s only natural they think they understand the entire movie
@@hereticwaffle5514 As someone who has read the book, this gives away hardly anything.
Liam Beerens you read the book? Please do tell me all the details that YOUR mind made when being told what to think of
