  • In this video I talk about a W.W. 2 Veteran who taught me the correct process of assembling Multi-Piece Wheels without endangering my myself. Dave Arnson is long gone as is Ever-Wear Tire Products, but what He taught me is invaluable and I'm grateful for His teachings.
I also briefly discuss the hazards of welding on these wheels while they are fully assembled and how fast a lapse in attention can prove fatal.

I recently purchased a 1970's Galion road grader which has similar wheels (not Widowmakers) and I've had zero luck finding a shop to change the old, rotted tires. A friend (who owns a tire shop) has agreed (with my help) to very carefully try (along with us both doing research and watching many videos about proper procedures and safety precautions). Thank you for this very informative video!

Excellent video sir, and very informative! I've been collecting a bunch of old trucks and wheels lately, so I now have a bunch of different styles of split rims and lock rings and such. Since everyone seems to be afraid of them anymore I think I'll just have to work on them myself.

Thanks for the great video instruction and cautions. There are several hazards in assembling multi-piece wheels and welding wheels.
The only things I might suggest is that you get a good tire cage, as I'm not sure your chain will protect you enough, and I'd get a remote inflation tool so
you don't have to be anywhere close to the tire to fill it or check pressure.
Welding causes a reaction know as Pyrolysis.
Info below quoted from an Ontario, Canada Gov't website:
"Pyrolysis is a thermochemical decomposition of organic material which can occur at elevated temperatures in the absence of oxygen. This decomposition process only requires the presence of rubber and heat. When heat is applied to the tire or to tire components, hydrocarbon vapours are released inside the tire. As the vapours are released, the air pressure and temperature within the tire increase dramatically. These vapours are highly flammable. If the flammable vapour inside the tire makes contact with oxygen at a temperature in excess of 400 degrees Celsius, auto-ignition can occur, resulting in an explosion.
Once the decomposition process begins, it is irreversible. There is no visual indication that the decomposition process is taking place. Depending on the particular circumstances, an explosion may occur immediately, within minutes or several hours after the exposure to the heat source. In many instances, an explosion can cause the tire and/or wheel components to be thrown great distances, resulting in severe worker injuries and/or fatalities as well as significant property damage."

Thanks for subscribing D6c10K. I'm not going to say that a separation of components won't happen, and I don't take your suggestions lightly. It's just good advice to be as safe as one can be when working on these wheels.
As for the rest of that article that you provided, THANKS VERY MUCH for such a great addition to my video. I hope that others who are going to attempt this procedure will find this video and all the information before going to wrok.

@@w.w.2restorations.vehicles698 These weren't rusty and I cleaned them up and painted them. I put about 5 lbs in them and mounted the first pair on the inside of the duals so if something happened they'd be contained.....aired them up to about 35 and drove them a mile or two. Rechecked to be sure everythig looked centered and seated and then finished airing up with a remote regulator & guage. Did the second pair the same way. Still has a pretty good pucker factor though.
I have a set of WWII wheals for my CCKW that I'm scared to use.because they're VERY rust pitted around the lip that holds them together.
BTW, my Dad was a SSgt as a mechaniic in the 353rd Engineers Construction Battallioin in the Pacific Theatre WWII....he fixed many of those wheels like yours. He had a buddy that had one blow up on him but he escaped without serius injury.

@@d6c10k4 Hey I'm curious how your split rims are holding up. I also have a '66 C60 with that exact style of split rim. Mine look to be in good shape, and I'd like to re use them, although I'm a little skeptical about it after reading probably hundreds of horror stories about them. I've had a lot of folks tell me to replace the axles with something that'll take a modern wheel, but absolutely do not wanna that, as I'm trying to keep the truck pretty original.

I have a 1948 Diamond T Model 201 I bought recently. It has locking ring rims but doesn't seem to have an obvious prying spot on the rings. I've been trying to take apart the spare tire since it's deteriorated beyond any use. Another video showed small marks were stamped on the ring but I haven't found any on mine

@@w.w.2restorations.vehicles698 Yes I ended up just tapping a large screw driver in around the edge and blowing out the gap with air till I found the opening and managed to get a tire iron in there and got the ring off this morning... One down!... This is just slightly easier than mounting clincher tiers on my Model T Ford.... I appreciate you knowledge of these and the history of how you came to it. Your video got me over the learning curve.
