I actually like having fewer amp model options. I don't need 100 amps. I just need a crunch, an edge of breakup, and a clean that I like. I'd rather play than spend time searching through models and tweaking endlessly.

Same here. I like the idea of a digital preamp, which is flexible and allows you to sculpt your own original tone. Having hundreds of different copies of real-life amps is useful if you want to replicate your analog rig, but otherweise it's not an inspiring workflow to me.

3 main reasons… 1) Boss is not flashy. Their products are just workhorses. They get the job done and last forever. 2) The GX line appears to be their new UI of the future, with color touch screens, etc, and the GT line will likely be left behind. 3) They rarely ever get updates, so once the product is out, there is no need to make new videos on it anymore, or discuss it further. But that doesn’t mean they are not great products still.
My favorite part of the GT1000 are the trigger options for each chain split. You can actually send different frequencies or attack level down different paths. Very cool. It also has lower latency than almost every other multi-effects unit.

I’ve been using a GT1000 core for two or three years now.
I use it in two different ways with two bands.
I use it as a direct all in one solution for a function band.
I use it purely for compression, eq, delay and a bit of reverb into the front end of my edge of breakup 18 watt Marshall clone.
It’s great that I have two switchable loops for my OCD Ge and my home built CE2 clone.
I use two FS-7 switches with it live. It gives me options for moving up and down presets, adding in a different effects and a tap tempo. I use the three footswitches on the unit for Drive (loop 1), Chorus (loop 2) and Delay. These can be per preset so I could change out drive or chorus for an internal effect if needed.
It’s a great solution if you love a couple of pedals that you wouldn’t part with. You can integrate them into your setup in proper loops. Makes for a flexible setup on a reasonably small pedal board.
I’m not bothered by the lack of firmware updates. It sounded amazing when I bought it and still does.
People seem to buy guitar pedals based on the hope of what it doesn’t yet do.

Ive had the GT1000 (full not core) for 4 years, and I couldn't be happier with it. Just plug it into anything and I have my sound, no carting around a Marshall JMP head, no heavy quad boxes. Been playing 40 years. Feels like playing a real amp, sounds great, what more could anyone want.

The best thing about BOSS GT-1000 Core is that it feels great while playing. Especially clean and lead tones. I can play hours and hours. Maybe there isn’t much tones from „real world” of known amps and effects. But comparing to Kemper, Fractal and Helix that I own GT-1000 Core has the best magic ingridient for creativity.
PS: Steven Wilson from Porcupine Tree is using it in the studio and sometimes live

I have wondered this for so long. It's ridiculously over sized 32 bit headroom and/or the AIRD has a touch response that feels alive. I didn't feel this with my HX Stomp, which i promptly gave to my brother without much remorse(i am not rich. He was just broke-er at the time). My GT1000 core is so crispy clear and present. I just wish the GX100 had the same high end chips that GT1000 has.

Im glad you did this video. As I was watching your last video Which modler to choose in 2024. I was waiting to see the GT-1000 core mentioned and was surprised it wasn't. I recently saw your Allan Holdsworth UD stomp video. I was able to use the 4 delays and the Master delay in the GT to get pretty close to what you were getting on that video. Its a great tone. The GT-1000 core might not be the newest flashiest coolest thing around but its a damn powerful little pedal. Love the content you are doing here. You're intro jams are always fun to listen to. Keep up the good work looking forward to what you have coming in 2024. 🤘

The GX 100 needs more love too. It solves all the UI issues of the GT series and has 8 footswitches and an exp pedal built in. People love the Katana tones but don't see they're the same in their GT/GX series.
Agreed though, a couple of small updates would be nice. I'd like to see the Celestion IRs from the IR-2 and a way to copy/paste effect blocks between patches would be nice. Still though I haven't found another modeller that ticks as many boxes for me, even at higher price points.

Hey man hope you’re well. can I ask.. I use GTK & love it too. When you tried to match other pedals did you do many boost pedals?
I ask as in the distortion block they give us a dry blend… now for example they’ve modelled a tube screamer & the real pedal has a dry path. Do you think from your tests that they’ve modelled the dry in or that we have to use the dry parameter they give us? It’s done my head in for ages 😂

You forgot Nita Strauss as a prominent user of the GT-1000 and core. She is a long time advocate of Boss GT's from the GT-10 through to the 1000. I never fully understand why people want a modelled amp to be based on a real amp - given that even 2 of the same real amps will sound different based on how they are mic'd and setup. Surely it's better to choose the tone based on sound and feel. Same with the current fashion for colour touchscreens - great for the home/bedroom guitar player, but not the best surely for live work. I hope Boss carry on with the current strategy.... how many of the 300+ amps in a Fractal/HX are actually going to be used after all?

Well done, John. I've been using the GT1000 in a live setting for about five years now and it has exceeded my expectations. Of course there are a couple of wish-list items that I'd like to see but those haven't prevented me from growing as a musician in any way during that time. I've never had an issue with the number of preamp models as I probably only use three. I feel the amp sounds that come out of this unit are better than anything I've tried (and yes, curiosity has caused me to audition a lot of other gear including modelers and cloning devices). The GT1000 sounds alive, clear and organic. I consider myself to be knowledgable about the unit but still discover things that make it even more valuable. I recently acquired a SoloDallas Schaffer Replica Storm at NAMM and positioned it in one of the loops in front of a mid-gain amp model and was astounded at how well everything worked together. I've always found that in the digital realm, analog drives just don't do well. The GT1000 has changed that opinion dramatically. The fact that the GT1000 has been the heart of my live rig for this long is a huge endorsement as to how good it really is.

I spotted the GT-1000core on Paul Jackson Jr.’s pedalboard when playing with Stevie Wonder in a holiday concert. I use it myself with a midi interface for added control. I tried the Quad Cortex, but the latency was so poor that I found it interfered in communication with my drummer. Having been an all analog user prior, the GT-1000 is a good fit for me. I use an iPad, iPhone, or laptop for making presets-I don’t bother with the on-board screen, which probably turns off a lot of players. For home use, I use the GT-1000 (the core version for portability). The GT-1000 has built-in bluetooth, which makes using an iPad for making presets very easy. I’d love to see you add presets for this unit, great tones!

I agree with many of the comments regarding this unit, I bought it specifically because it DOESN't have 100 amps 200 cabinets and a 1000 pedals. I seem to get bogged down by choices, and I would rather have a few tones that sound great as opposed to many that sound like crap. The BOSS has replaced a 59' Bassman reissue, a Hughes and Kettner Tubemeister, an Ampeg V4 and about 60 pedals. I have been fortunate (Unfortunate?) enough to have been a professional musician the last 35 years of my life, and I love the all encompassing simplicity of these things. I mean modeling amps in general. Post Covid it seemed like bars were trying to get as much back as possible, and hiring multiple bands to play for a flat rate or a percentage of the door. That was the start of my "Smaller/Lighter" evolution which over the past couple years has led me to this point. Using the GT-1000 at no time have I ever felt i was missing out by not having a "real" amp. It feels like an amp, it sounds like an amp, but it doesn't weigh a tonne or need maintenace like an amp. This and an FRFR is also probably the 2nd best Bass rig I've ever used, 1st being a late 80's Trace Elliot. Also maybe I'm the only one who actually likes the screen? I don't spend alot of time staring at my pedalboard during a gig so muticolored touchscreens aren't really a priority. And Lastly, congratulations Nathan on the birth of you Daughter! My Son (Sonny) was born last year about the same time I think? Take care, and Happy New Year.

I have been playing the gt 1000 for about 2 years into a headrush frfr 108. It swaped away helix, headrush and kemper. The big version is awesome and still compact. You nailed all the highlights: lowest latency and boss X amps. This kind of response you get makes you feel like you are playing into analog stuff and IMO differs from all other modelers out there. X amp and post EQ = you get wherever you want.

I use a full size gt1000. Don't plan on changing it soon as it does what I need it to do and does it well. Gapless switching was a big one for me. Super low latency is also fantastic. However I don't run mine direct. Tube poweramp and 2x12 is the thing for me. Some secret sauce in a real cab and poweramp. Makes it feel way better. Volume knob response is not as bad as one might assume. Amps tend to do it better but I tried some that are actually worse than this unit in that department. However it took me a looooooong time to get the sounds how I wanted them. It has alot to do with the type of output you select as they make a huge impact on amp models. Spending that much time on eq blocks both graphic and parametric is a bummer and might be a turnoff for a lot of people. That said, once I did get what I wanted I didn't change a single thing since. Just works and sounds good. Part of the trouble was the fact that I didn't want to hear I was actually changing amp models. I wanted consistency like I was playing the same amp. That was really hard to get for me. But it can be done. I run only one bank with 5 patches going from sparkly cleans, edge of breakup with drives, crunchy with boosts, chug stuff, saturated leads, wet, dry you name it. A lot of gain staging with volume boosts for pickup splits, switchable eff and so on. A lot of flexibility for a relatively small box and two cables. I guess same could be done with real amps and boards but size, weigh and price of that rig... Naah. There u go. My thoughts and experiences with gt1000. Maby someone finds it usefull😊

The best bang for buck amp and effect unit on the market still. It may be 'limited' in terms of amp models, but you can get awesome sounds and the effects are superb - i mean how many amps do you really need, I use 4 or 5 amps then mess with gain level, drive and other effects.
Also love that the lag free switching between patches, not to mention you can send midi messages to effects pedals in your fx loops. I also run a Pirate Midi Bridge 6 to easily select patches on the fly, enabling me to use the full GT1000 buttons like stomp boxes etc. There is a lot you can do with this thing, the only thing I didn't like with mine was a few drive pedals didn't sound great going in the front but that wasn't a big deal in the end.
PS The editor on the PC is fantastic to use, it is easy to use yet has many complex options to make the units flexible as anything out there.

So I bought 2 of these 5 years ago. Playing in a 60's 70's tribute band I needed a really wide variety of tones. Vox, Fender, Marshall, Fuzz, Sitar and acoustic tones. Constantly tweaking them after every gig, I cursed at them for 3 years! Lol! I finally have them dialed in to where I'm actually happy. And now with the Ver. 4 firmware update it's really become the whole package. Still hate the separate IR software, but I've learned to live with it.

It's a shame that silly online marketing has so much influence on what people buy. From my experience, the Boss modellers are really, really good, but at least online players seem to gravitate towards Fractal, Line6 and so on. The lack of updates is a fair point. Also, the GX100 has a problem with external IRs sounding muffled, no fix from Boss, which is a shame. The GT1000 does not have this problem. I had the Core for a while. Great unit.

Just got my GT1000Core and I running it a little uniquely. I'm actually using a Mooer Cab x2 (got it a little while earlier) and I'm prefering that to the GT1000 speaker sim for now, though I haven't done much tweeking yet. Also using a ES-8 for midi control and I've used both loops to connect to the ES-8 so I can put pedals before and after the GT1000 pre-amp. Can also take the Cab x2 out the loop if I do want to use the Gt1000 speaker sim. In theory I can easily switch between mono/sterio/wet-dry by taking a dry from the Cab x2 second output. Using the midi from the ES-8 I can also control pedals in the GT1000 loop without changing the patch so it feels somewhat like a conventional pedalboard.

GT-1000 Core is the first modeler I've owned. I added the WIDI interface and use the tone studio app on my phone with Bluetooth to tweak and edit on the gig. Makes it easy. The full GT-1000 has this built in. I was considering buying an expression pedal and foot switch but decided to go ahead and just buy a full size GT-1000. Had it on one gig so far and I love having the bigger unit to play with live.

Personally i like only few amps to choose, cause in the past I own helix, and a lot amps made me tweaking more than playing. So i overall like it. Its true that updates and speaker section also irs loading is nightmare. It will be great to have comunity like line6.

I use my GT1000-core without the speaker emulation using 4 cables method. This way i can use all the time based effects and modulations the GT provide and by-pass my tube amp preamp to use whatever GT preamp i want. I use pedals for overdrive not because GT ones are bad, there are plenty of great pedals in there, but only because i prefer settings them up oldfashioned with knobs and activate them with a more comprehensive way instead of remebering which overdrive is on which GT switch. Great unit if you learn how to use it, great value, maybe doing too much stuff to be understood properly by most.

I've owned a Helix and a headrush and for my ear specifically (100% preference), I distinctly prefer Boss modeling platforms. I've owned them since the GT5. At the time, it was awesome but a little complicated. Queue up the days of software editors and it's become amazing. It's totally a preference thing, but I prefer the way Boss amps respond. There's a crisp factor that I really enjoy for my tone. The timing effects are distinctly Boss. The way that the COSM amps respond is fantastic. The AIRD models have taken that up a notch. I still use my GT1 from time to time because I just love the tones that come out of it. I went to a GX 100 from my GT 100 and WOW!!! I was a little underwhelmed with the total DSP in the GX 100 and just bought a GT 1000 (the full board). It feels more like my GT 100 and for that, I'm ecstatic!

The Boss units I think people don't clamor about because it doesn't take out ads saying "The owner sought out 448 obscure amps to have listed here".
The thing is that even with you guys who demo this stuff, you'll demo it but then mainly use one or two amps in your own usage.
Think about what you're using - clean, slight drive, higher gain and that's about it. My only beef is the UI, though once you get used to it, it's fine.
The monochrome screen takes a lot less power, so it doesn't need much compared to HX or some others too.

I had the gt-1000 i even made presets that i loaded into Boss Tone Exchange. it's a machine that i later sold to switch to Fractal (which i love and think is the best today) but honestly i regretted selling the gt-1000 it had perfect sounds, lots of connections and allowed you to really create your own sound! for me the display wasn't a problem, and i didn't even find the tonestudio slow! the only flaw was the upgrades, without upgrades a machine loses a lot in value (and i'm not talking about quality) but if out of necessity a person needs to sell it, he then risks not being able to get something out of it! Having said that I am seriously thinking of taking back the Boss gt-1000 (the full version I had not the core) as a backup for the Fractal.

I just sold my gt1000 core. I actually think it was the best unit for its price point. With the I/O I was able to run it 4 cable method with a preamp and also send a signal into a mixer for in ears for my drummer. The pros for me were the routing options, the assign matrix, dynamic control and the unit never got so hot I thought it would explode (like my HX stomp). As for the cons, I would say I never fell in love with any of the amp models, loading your own IRs was a time consuming task, updating the unit had me a little confused, the AIRD outputs all sounded terrible to me (eventually just used the recording mode with cab sim turned off through a power amp). There definitely was a learning curve for the unit but overall I was satisfied with it. I moved on to a Tonex so I guess I will write a small essay for your next vid on that one 😂

I have been using the GT 1000 for years. I recently picked up the Fender tone master pro 3 months ago. All amp modelers seem to have that fizz around 4K -9k range. I am just not happy with fender tone master pro. It lacks the beef chug sustain and just overall thin. The GT 1000 sounds and feels much more full and more like a real tube amp. I just cannot switch it out and I am going to sell the fender. Also the integrated pedal on Gt 1000 is amazing and a light that lets u know the toe pedal is engaged. With fender you need to get the mission engineering pedal if you want a toe pedal (dual). And there is no light so for live you don't see if you have for example the wah or volune pedal engaged. For me the Boss wins hands down and for the price difference there is no comparison. I run them into the Laney FR12. I do agree that boss should keep releasing updates. But overall I cannot switch it out for anything else

I bought one used for $440 total incl. shipping from guitar center.
I’ve wanted an HX Stomp for years because I’ve seen everyone use them on RUclips, but I’ve also been playing for a long time, always used and still use. BOSS products, and no matter what new tech or fancy stuff that comes out in the pedal/gear world, boss just makes quality, rugged, understated and excellent tools for the real gigging musician that just work and last forever. I noticed that some people had Line 6 products that crapped out or broke on them after a while of using them live, and I know I can always rely on Boss to make amazing shit, so I just went for it and I know I’ll like the GT1KC because I already have an IR200, I just wanted to get rid of the rest of my external pedals and finally have a modern all-in-one pedal.
I had the ME 25 and while it’s severely outdated and I did well it, it still sounded fantastic.
Someone else had mentioned that Boss isn’t “Flashy” or “Sexy”, and that’s why the fly under the radar.

I just power my Core with a 1spot wall wart, or off the CS6 if it's on a pedalboard. I like that it's the standard pedal connector, polarity and voltage and DC not AC. I realize they've already updated the UI and display in the GX100, so I'm sure their next release will have the color screen, I think that's part of the appeal of other modelers.
Thanks for taking about the GT-1000.
I use 2 dual button footswitches with the Core.
My favorite amp models in the GT are the Boss proprietary ones (natural, x crunch; x modded)
I also use an MXR reverb with mine as I find the reverbs a bit sterile. (And you can't do simultaneous room and spring like if you want to imitate a fender amp with reverb in a live room)
I wish the GT had ODR-1, precision drive and BluesBreaker drives and harmonic tremolo. The pitchshifting isn't the best, it's not eventide level smoothness/tracking.
I hope Boss gives us at least one more update including new effects before they discontinue it

I use the closely related SY-1000 - I'm not sure what difference the AIRD actually makes, not compared them side by side - and a little while ago I made the conscious decision to just use the SY and my FR rather than lug either my AC30S1, Marshall JMP1 rig or my Helix LT to gigs too. I play my own material and have only really started gigging with my current band in the summer this year, so lots of support or festival slots means little time to setup and soundcheck and a simple rig is essential. I'm down to a pair of guitars, the pedalboard (with the SY and the GM-800) and a Laney FR12. Stereo to FoH via 2 DI boxes, flat EQ, pan right and left and I'm ready for a level check.
Even though I'm pretty technical and have been using modellers live for nearly a decade, using a modeller requires you to be both a guitarist and a studio engineer - you not only need to know how to dial in the amp, you need to know which mic, positioned where, and what outboard EQ settings are usually used on the amp/cab/mic combo - which is why loading 3rd party IRs are so attractive because lots of that is done for you by Redwirez or OwnHammer. Points of reference are always difficult too - particularly with the Line6 and Boss propriety models - you have to have a really good idea of what sounds good, or have the real thing next door to your FR rig.
Specifically with the SY, for a while I used a preset lifted from one of Leon Todd's videos based on a Bogner model but recently I've been leaning into the 'Maximum' model with success. Nevertheless I often get out my Helix or take a real amp to rehearsal just to make sure I'm not heading down some blind alley tone wise.
I think it all sounds good ...

I use a Boss GX-100. It's a pretty good unit - built like a tank and has 8 assignable foot switches along with a built in rocker pedal.
I was torn between this and the HX stomp XL, and I got this because mainly because of brand loyalty to Boss, and I liked the control layout. In hindsight, I wonder if I made the right choice because, as you said, Boss don't do the 'major update' thing with extra amps/effects in the same way that Line6 do.
That said, it's a good, solid unit, and even with the stock IRs gets some decent sounds. The touch screen is also pretty neat, and I also like the software editor.
I for one would be happy to see you do more Boss videos and give your insight to producing versatile, good sounding presets.

I've been using the GT-1000 (base) for a few years, and it's really flexible, and sounds great. but I'm about to switch to a Headrush MX5, because I'm trying to make my live setup as compact as possible, and because the GT-1000's editing is just so uninspiring to use. you can get it to do just about anything you can think up, but the user interface is just awful.
sound-wise, I've never loved the reverb options--they're very good, just nothing that's ever made me go 'wow!', which I actually found surprising. and it's a shame I had to use the send/return to get a usable whammy/pitch pedal. the unit has plenty of power, and not including a whammy-style effect with good polyphonic tracking seems like an oversight to me. I think you're right about the amp models--the amps are great, and very tweakable, but I almost never reach for the proprietary AIRD stuff, even though they sound very good.

John, love your playing and I do appreciate your contribution to the topics at hand. As you discuss and demonstrate all the different amp modeling and the effects, we need to get real about your skill and talent playing anything. You make everything sound it's best because any real (just teasing ok?) guitar player knows that 90% of your 'tone' is in your left hand. Until we get as good as you, learn your left hand skills, we don't really have the ability to choose and specifically as you. I mean that as a complement.
I tried a Boss GT1000 Core for about a week and sent it back. Maybe it's what you are "playing into" that is making "everything sound awesome"?
I feel like I either have to just "settle" with something pretty "generic" like a Line6 Stomp or overall, with all the things you demo, the Fractal sounds the best to me - at 3X the cost :P

I tried a GX-100 after much time spent in Helix world. It wasn't too bad, but the one thing it could not do was a simple pitch-shift. It can do some harmonic pitch stuff, but if you want to drop everything down a couple of tones to save switching guitars it was properly hopeless. For a modeller that powerful to fail to emulate a digitech drop, which is a very common thing, it sadly had no use for me.

If the only ding on the GT1000 is limited amp models, then it seems like marrying a Tonex with the large unit is a dream rig. Or using the GT for effects with a real amp if you still want that. I grew up with Boss pedals before I switched to multi-effect rack units. I am used to the idea that I have an effects unit and I have an amp or amp solution. I know that expectation is changing with the quality of amps you can build into the Kemper and Quad Cortex. But I don't think we are there yet. I still love my tube amps. They have had a happy marriage with the TC Electronic G-System for over two decades. Now, the age of the TC if finally scaring me into a change before something bad happens (as I see other users complain about their G-Systems tapping out). The GT1000 looks to me to be compact, intuitive, and you gotta love those Boss FX. So I am taking the plunge and replacing the G-Sys with it (full size GT). I'll integrate my tube amp for home shows, and Tonex for road shows, and I suspect I will be quite happy!

I've recently transitioned to the BOSS GT 1000 Core from the Line 6 Helix Floor, opting for a more streamlined setup with fewer pedals on a compact board. Unfortunately, a significant drawback is that the firmware lacks support for Mac OS 13 or higher (currently at version 14 as of my writing). This means individuals who have acquired a Mac in the past year won't be able to utilize Tone Studio or employ it as an interface, posing a considerable challenge for users in this category.

Actually I find the replicas of the real amps on the GT-1000 to be really cheap sounding, but the x-crunch/x-hi gain ones are really good going through the return of my amps.
Also a lot of effects are glitchy, for example I bought a Boss OC-5 instead of using the one in the GT and can confirm that it tracks waaay better. Speaker modelling can be better as you've said, but it has an IR loader, which solves the problem. Other than that the full size GT really satisfies my needs it is a great all in one unit for a really good price!

It seems the amps are the reason players prefer other modelers. Boss doesn't have models named after known amps, and there are not very many amps in the 1000. All the other negatives discussed here are also reasons why players buy the competition. However, effects on the 1000 are about as good as it gets, so it really should be considered an excellent option..

Oh, and as for the PS, which, I agree, is dodgy. Just double the power outs from a regular board PS, and you’re golden. I do, as the GT is sitting on my board, anyway.

I do use one of the physical loops for a Boss EQ 200 before the valve amp and the other side is in the effects loop of the amp.

The tones were pretty good. I think the higher resolution bit rate and DSP helps it sound more open. Not sure about the OD's, need to hear more. The Blues Driver is very good. Delays and reverbs sound great. I am not a fan of the display, but I am slightly biased with the Stomp and Helix.
