Thank you for this video. I love my GT-1000, but I was always bothered by how muffled the drive tones sounded, no matter what I tried. After watching this video, I solved the problem differently - I bought a custom IR pack and used it instead of the stock IR emulation. The difference is night and day.
The GT1000 core is underrated in my opinion. Most people choose the HX Stomp because it was way more effects, but I have always preferred the sound of Boss effects, and the GT1000 core does Boss effects better than any other multi-effects unit. The amp sims are OK as well, but the effects are why I bought it. If you want a ton of Boss effects in one pedal, the GT1000 core is the way to go.
Agree the Gt1000 core doesn’t get enough love, but I ended up moving back to hx stomp for a different reason, is the user interface/flow/visual representation for me. I think the boss has better sound and feel, it not by enough to sacrifice how much easier I found the hx to use (Just my personal experience and preferences)
@@ryand5251I also jumped ship from the GT1000 to an HX Stomp. Changing from one OD to another in GT requires a fair bit of tweaking. The HX just swaps something usable for something else immediately usable.
Hahaha, I like the humor in your videos and that Lee is often on your channel. A little tip from my side: To improve the sound a little more, I can recommend the Ampster from Carl Martin. It's a Fenderstyle tube pre-amp in pedal format. ;)
Saw Lee play at the prog for peart with Galahad recently,he had a killer sound and played amazing guitar.intrested in hearing the new album. Still got my boss katana artist mk 2 thanks Paul for helping me dial in some tones.
As a hobbyist, I've struggled with really falling in love with my GT-1000 Core. I've found the best sound going into the front of my Champ clone is to turn off the output section and the amps and use it basically for it's pedals and effects. I've found new respect for it by doing this. Of course, each use case is different and I might be a little insane.
Yeah, you just have to make peace with the fact that a modeller into a real amp in the room never sounds anything like what it does direct, or into an FRFR, and then find a way to get it sounding good in your rig.
You guys never disappoint, but thats more of a testament to this channel's ability to play than it is the gear. I did the ox stomp for a moment too, but the workflow was just too clunky and the option paralysis just ended up not working well for me and I spent more time just tinkering. I reverted back to the AIRD cab and external IR's.
My God!...Lee's got a nearby 20 year career of prog and rock music production!!...I am the only one who didn't know this?......(didn't know his full name until this vid..sorry) Enjoying Comatose album as I type. Great stuff
Confused: can you only turn off cabs, not amp sims & cabs/IRs both, using the CORE as an effects unit? Looks like he scrolled to the block OUTPUT SELECT then he selected the PAGE RIGHT button next to EXIT. I do not get the same result when I do that: is there a change I need to make in the OUTPUT SELECT somehow?
Make sure the gt is set to output “Recording”. I don’t know why, it’s a bit complicated. In that mode you can turn off just the cab. What the gt won’t let you do is turn off the amp and leave the cab on (like an IR loader). There is a work around buts its complex and not ideal. I wish boss would address this
I love the Gt1000 in this context going direct however when I try to integrate it into an amp no matter what you do those output filters are a disaster. The closest I have been able to dialect is by selecting the “recording” option and leaving the speaker option on. On some guitar amps I can turn it off but sadly most of the time the eq is remarkably different and not good. It’s a pity because for going direct that GT it’s a monster. Literally with a couple of external foot switches and an expression pedal you got a full rig.
It looks like you are recording the output of the Ox into the DAW? Could you put the Ox in the GT-1000s effects loop so you could still use it if using the GT-1000 as an audio interface through the USB output or hear its output when using headphones on the GT-1000?
Hi Paul, What do you feel is the best option for a bedroom guitarist (without factoring in price too much): Boss Katana w/ GA-FC, Quad Cortex, Hx Stomp, Axe Fx iii, or Boss GT 1000?
I don't really understand what the ox is doing Is it just cabs? Are you guys listening through monitors as well? So if I have a line 6 power cab with the ox stomp be useless for me?
Thanks for still covering the GT1000 Core. Mine lives on a board with my Tonex and an Ox Stomp. Sounds killer but not quite as good as you guys. Accepting the magic is in the fingers did you do much tweaking in the DAW?
I have the GT1000core paired with the Two Notes Opus. In my opinion, it sounds much better than the OX Stomp, and it's MIDI, so you can change your sound with one button press.
Question: I agree that the OX sounds better than the Boss IRs, but why can't someone make an IR that replicates the exact sound that you're getting from the OX? If that could be loaded into the GT1000Core, that would be preferable, right?
Question 1: did you need to disable or turn off something on Boss GT-1000 to have OX Stomp to do the Cab Modeling? Question 2: Are the Boss GT-1000 Cab sims inferior or not as great sounding, or was this just Lee's choice to use OX Stomp?
I was a line 6 guy but recently switched to boss and got a GX100… I get some of my best tones ever from it. Rather than the ox shown here, I am considering pairing it to a ToneX, but the in built amps sound great so not too sure.. what a great headache to have 😂
@Gibbo1050 interesting, may give it a go..I love this idea of one unit for all, but I suppose some have huge pedal boards, so 2 units isn't too bad. The GX100 only has a handful of amps (12 I think) and some sound good. I think the toneX or tonex1 may open a new world of possibilities.
@steved1099 the MX5 has some good amps as well, especially if you use third party IRs. Took a chance with the Tonex1 as it was cheap!! Loads of decent free captures on their tone exchange (including some Studiorats ones) and you can also use IRs with them. I use the Tonex amp with the Tonex reverb which frees up a few more blocks for fx on the Headrush.
there's one thing in opening track i noticed with solo. if it were a real amp, there could have been a little feedback to elevate feel of it. how do you achieve that even playing live with modelers, or is a controllable feed back not cool anymore? really nice tone though, very natural sounding
The Ox Stomp has “speaker drive” which you can adjust. It sounds on the face of it like a gimmick and at studio volumes (as shown in most RUclips videos) it’s inaudible, but…… at gig volume (loud, with a real drummer) it adds a certain something that makes it sound like the cone is crying and feeding in that subtle musical way
The Boss unit sounds great, but it's a real buzzkill that the editor doesn't work better. I'm at an age where I refuse to bend over and interact with a screen that looks like it came from a 1980s Casio keyboard. I'll stick with HX Edit on my lovely MacBook screen. That new recording sounds like it's really going to be a winner though!
Having the basic screen keeps the power requirements down. The core runs off 9v 500mah comfortably. The HX Stomp on the other hand with its colour screen needs 3000mah (3amps). Also, I’ve had no problems with the Boss editor on my Mac. Links with the core beautifully
@@LA.Guitar I gave up on battery dependency many years ago. As a live cover band guy, they just let you down at the worst times. So if you are plugging in anyway, does his matter? I have my Helix floor, which has a better display, but I interact with the always on editor off to the side on my MacBook Air. No bending over, squinting, or remembering which button to push/pull/twist/etc.. The MacBook usually also provides the break music. At times, I've had it also providing keyboard sounds via MainStage. It's nice to have.
The Ox is an awesome device, there are 2 downsides. Biggest Downside: App. Its terrible. They should do a pc/mac app over cable. And the latency is about 3.5ms which could be better. I mean the boss does all fx and modelling and has 1ms. Otherwise its really great.
I mean, UA vs Boss isnt a fair fight. Soundwise anyhow. If it ever drops the signal again i just add a couple more characters to the network name. But so far the last one i created has lasted a couple years. I stumbled on this hack on some obscure thread…i told one of the ua guts about this and he had no idea. Try it. Youre welcome!

It is very disappointing that UA have not sorted out the app nearly a year later. I would certainly be put off by that as your resale value is going to be harsh. It’s not really good enough from UA. If the hardware requires software to work then the software needs to be 100%. And if after a year they have not fixed it, not much hope of it working at all in a few years time. Enjoyed the video all the same

Always great to see Lee, and great solo from him!! It's amazing how good the tech sounds these days, that small board sounds awesome.
Yep Lee is awesome

The thing is, nearly everything is worth buying ! The OX really opens the sound from the GT.
Well done and thanks
