People sometimes forget that Cortes and the conquistadores didn't conquer Mexico on their own... they had thousands of aboriginal allies who flocked to their side to overthrow the Aztec empire
And what did the Spanish do to all of those people? Oh, that's right, made them all slaves. Thanks Spain!
Except maybe they were enemies of the Aztecs, and not aboriginals? And saw a way to gain power? Or were they just like monkeys of the jungle to you? Cortes, a christian who was christian only in name, and I am sure he is in hell If Jesus' words are still something to go by. I am sure they are not in most christians definition of the gospel, though
I have no idea where Cortes is now and I agree with you that many Christians past present are not following the words of Christ. My point was more that history isn't a black and white narrative, it is far more complex and nuanced than the good-evil narratives we tend to feel comfortable with. I think that trying to depict colonizers = evil and colonized = good, is essentially creating such a simplistic narrative.@@beardedskyrim8652
@@Reesorville Do you think Jesus was a fan of colonization? He told us to give everything away if someone asked to have it, he told us to give the other cheek if someone slapped us, he told us to abandon our fathers and mothers if he called upon us, he told us to be wary of preachers and pastors in his name. And he was right. Christianity today is an abomination according to his words, and have been for probably thousand years. Popes, the vatican with child rapings, money grabbing pastors, colonization in the name of christ, slavery in the name of christ. I am an atheist, but if there is a place to go for christians, I have a vague idea what it is. You folks did not follow his word. And I have read them all.
@@beardedskyrim8652All the native people were native people-They sided with the Spanish because of Aztec cruelty. But they were soon to know the joys of enslavement, and smallpox-Things the Spanish hadn’t told them about. Also forced religious conversion, land theft and on and on. The Spanish are noteworthy for only obeying one treaty, they made with one tribe-The Tlaxcala, and this was in return for the Tlaxcala largely fielding the army that overthrew the Aztec for Cortez.
So trading bad for worse.
In fact, Cortez didn't defeat the Aztecs alone; he was helped by many natives who were being subjugated by the Aztecs

Its funny how people who advocate for returning the land to previous "owners" are the same people who advocate for laws allowing squatters to take your current home with no justification or payment.
"If anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, let him have your coat also [for the Lord repays the offender]. And whoever forces you to go one mile, go with him two. Give to him who asks of you, and do not turn away from him who wants to borrow from you." That is Jesus words, bro, from Matthew 5, verse 40-42. You must have misunderstood something.
Jesus also stated that liars and haters will go to hell. Do you accept that, too?

@@beardedskyrim8652you are aware about the difference between voluntarily doing something and stealing, are you?
Stealing obviously is a huge sin in the Bible.
@@beardedskyrim8652 Dude your taking that out of context. This was in reference to a Roman Law at the time, where a roman soldier could force a jew to carry his armor, pack for 1 mile. My understanding is that Jesus wanted to teach us how to react to persecution and insults. Not to retaliate, but to react with love, ergo heap burning coals on their heads.
God is also very clear on His commands against stealing and people wanting to possess things, women, homes, that don't belong to them. The two subjects are very different.

That's what happens when you let the willfully ignorant who are politically charged propagandist, force their way on society, government, and education. 🙄
No this is what happen when you as a parent don't educate your children. I talk to my kids (8 and 10) at least twice a week on how they are being brainwashed by programming, and how very powerful people are targeting children because parents don't teach them what's happening. Now they understand when they are being programmed. These conversations about Mao sedung, and communism/marxism will stick with them forever. It is our duty as parents to teach our children who, why, and what these people are doing. The only person you can blame is yourself.
Lol. Did you make fun of her statement? I would have done it.
Well. Later, I would have sought a conversation with her.
Honestly, the Aztecs had it coming. They were a war based society that was quick to make enemies with their neighbors. It’s no wonder the smaller tribes were quick to make allies with the Spanish and overthrow the Aztecs.
They had no techs. China and Japan could fight back. Native Americans had no metallurgy, no iron or steel weapons, no wheels. This is why they unfortunately became easy victims of heavily armed Spaniards. With all respect and sympathy towards them.
@@Egill2011Sounds like their issue. Eurasia didn’t stop technologically progressing among each other. You’re telling the thousands of Native Tribes competing against each other for thousands of years were just barely getting into their Bronze Age by the time the Spanish Empire arrived?
@@Wadiyatalkinabeet_ thanks to Chinese gun powder. The european managed to have that tech and helped them in they conquest of americas.
@Egill2011 The war went a little different than you might expect. When Moctezuma II was assassinated, his successor (Cuauhtemoc) led an assault against the Spanish and drove them out of the city. The Spanish weren’t able to use their horses effectively in the narrow streets and they suffered a great loss, so much so that there is a tree known as the tree where Cortez cried. The day is known as “La noche triste”.
They were driven out into the open plains where they were able to use their horses more effectively. Unfortunately Aztecs were never exposed to warfare on horseback and suffered a heavy loss.
From there it went downhill because the Spanish blew up their bridges, leaving them isolated in the lake, and then proceeded to pollute their water supply. They managed to hold out for 2 years but were ultimately defeated.
Thus, I feel it was less about tech and more about the Aztecs having to deal with unconventional warfare. I’m sure they were never exposed to things like using disease as a weapon of war, or horses/formations. The Aztecs were more so involved in raids and scrimmage battles.
@@moisesarellano9205 the aztecs were trained to attack people at night and kill them in their sleep. Small groups of guerrillas. They only attacked what they knew they could take, they were weak actually and preyed on easy targets

It's almost as if the historical reality is a little more complex than one or the other
@beardedskyrim8652 Well, you can go back to the old ways. Or pray to God who created those things that your ancestors prayed to. Don't look at Christianity as gloom, but in God of faith, hope, and love. Humans, especially those who believe that you have to beat people into submission (Muslims and others) to believe in their gods, are wrong. What about Mormon religion people and Muslims and Arab people husbands died first before many wives per one husband like 10 wives dying alongside her one dead husband will wipe out population of women in small town. And what about children and babies ? Do they die also with parents same time as wife and husband? That will reduce the population growth to zero population in small town.

Not to mention Islam had slavery imposed in India. Brits banned Muslim Slave trade..
The one thing that the Brits claim as their great contribution to India, the abolition of Sati, was a very rare practice as it is not prescribed in any authoritative religious text. It's practice was only exacerbated by invaders.
Similar to how one should not expect most Japanese to know much about the crimes of imperial Japan through their mainstream education and publication, one should not expect objective accounts from British sources. Unfortunately, as good as Thomas Sowell usually is, his resource materials for some of his works, particularly Conquests and Cultures, heavily justify colonization.

Back in the 90s I once purchased an old volume called Prescott's: Conquest of Mexico & Conquest of Peru. At the time my family and I were living in Mexico, in fact, right along the pathway that Cortez had taken to get to Mexico City, so this volume interested me. Prescott was an amazing scholar, learning to read in any number of languages, including Aztec. He researched Aztec literature which recorded much of their culture and history. The footnotes in this book are amazing, as they are in English, Spanish AND Aztec. Like a true scholar Prescott documents what he reports, all the way back to the Aztec priests themselves.
Anyway, I remember reading about the increase in canabalism and human sacrifice. It reached its worse a few years before the Spanish showed up. At one point, because of a drought, the Aztecs sacrificed 40,000 (FORTY THOUSAND) people in the manner described in this video. It took three days to line them all up and cut their hearts out, burning the hearts on a brazier. Where did the Aztecs find this many people to sacrifice? From other tribal groups. This had a lot to do with Cortez' success, when with a tiny force he conquered the Aztecs. Part of his success was due to the fact that many of these other tribal groups allied themselves with him.
There is even an entire state in Mexico called Tlaxcala. The Tlaxcalans were fierce warriors who, unfortunately lived right next door to the Aztec capitol. When the learned of Cortez' plan and his profession of faith in his God, who would give victory, they pledged, not only to join him, but to join with his people. The original settlers (far back as we can ascertain) of Tlaxala ARE the Tlaxcalans who intermarried with the Spanish.
I'm not Roman Catholic but I have to respect the Roman Catholic Church when they have done some things right and good. It's true they have also done some bad things. But then, Scripture says that all men are sinners and capable of the worst things.
Then you have to respect the Aztecs and their human sacrifices because they did good things in their society too.
And what did the Roman Catholics do to the tribes that allied themselves with them? You left that part of the story out, which is what PragerU likes to do: manipulate and white-wash history.
@@jacobbuzan374 Read the comment below mine, by @goforbroke28.
Sure the Aztecs did good things as well as bad. Sure, the Catholics did both good and bad. That's how it is with human beings. The point of the video was that it would be preferable to be under the Christians than under the Aztecs.
Have you ever read any real history of pre-conquest Mexico or of the conquest itself, written by, or at least documented by writings of those who were there?
I only mentioned 3 days out of the history of the Aztec Empire. it has also been documented that Cortés' men, entering into Cholula, which is outside of modern Puebla de Los Ángeles, encountered storehouses full of human skulls, which were what remained of human sacrifices practiced on that site. The estimate, based on shear volume was at least six million skulls. This is documented.
Modern archaeology continues unearth evidence of abundant human sacrifice and cannibalism under both the Aztecs and their predecessors.
I lived for over 8 years near Tula, Hidalgo, where there is an archaeological site and museum. There it was discovered that the Olmecs (predecessors to the Aztecs) would periodically make a treaty with a neighboring tribe, taking one of their young women for a "wife." After a year they would sacrifice her, skin her and stretch her skin over their idol to worship, presumably until they needed another skin....
Do you have such examples documented about the Catholic Church? Canninalism, human sacrifice, and that in the MILLIONS?
Last I checked the average Mexican is 70% indigenous, genetically. That's what happened to the natives in Mexico. They're still there.
Prager U certainly doesn't mind healthy disagreement. But they probably roll their eyes over folk who make broad accusations fail to back them up.

The "point" of this video is the problem, and seeing so many people fall into the trap of glorifying one oppressor over the other is even more sickening.

The question being debated in this video make me sick, and the people falling for it is even more sickening, to say the least.
You have to take into account the fact that those Aztec codices were written post conquest, all previous codices were burned by the church. They are very likely embellished to favor the church, because in reality Cortés in fact first raided Tlaxcala and warned them that they would join forces with the Aztecs instead if they didn’t join him in fighting the Aztecs. Also without them, Cortés would not have even survived a skirmish. Cortés only had a couple hundred men, the Aztecs were like 300k strong, and the Spanish would have to funnel themselves through bridges to reach their city so they would’ve easily been picked off, the victory goes to the native tribes
If you guys look at the origin of pozole, Aztecs used to cook it with human flesh, yup they practiced cannibalism. But when the Spaniards came they change it to pork meat or chicken.

Why are we mentioning black people?
@@dyiorragray2019 Because he is talking about the colonization of Africa by the Bantu Peoples. See "Black" is not really a race and neither is "African." There are many races in Africa who are Black but who aren't closely related. The San people separated themselves from the rest of the human population something like 100,000 years ago and moved to South Africa. They are Black, but since the Eurasian population left (Or was kicked out of) Africa some 60,000 years ago, there are Black people in Africa who are more closely related to blonde Norwegians than they are to the San. One common mistake regarding the conquest and destruction of Tenochtitlan, is forgetting that Cortés allied with all the native citites that wanted to get rid of their oppressors, the ruling mexicas (not aztecs). The spaniards had only 600 men, and the Txalcaltecas, totonacas, and other cities attacked the mexicas with over 100000 men. Some mexican historians like Juan Miguel Zunzunegui think that tge Txalcatecas were really the ones driving this war and the ones that actively decided that adopting a new religion might be a good idea.
christianity has only one sacrifice thats a great bargain in my opinion. i'm half mexican I love the natives.
Incorrect, Cortes coaxed them into joining his war through intimidation followed by an ultimatum: don’t join me and I will ask the Aztecs for an alliance instead
By that time Spain had a tremendous experience dealing with the Arabs, making deals with other Christian Kingdoms to defeat the Muslims. Cortes was intelligent and he spoke with all the tribes that wanted to get rid of the Mexicas and they went together to defeat them. It's true that the vast majority of soldiers were Tlaxcaltecas but they were led by the Spaniards. The Spanish were just a few but they knew better military tactics. The proof of this is that Tenochtitlan was besieged, this war tactic was not known in America until the arrival of cortes. It's fair to say that it was done by Spain and the natives together.

Christians, who will burn your native holy structures, destroy all your native knowledge and traditions and force you into slavery and forced conversion? Because all of that happened in latin America. Why do you think the whole of Middle Amaerica is christian and speaks spanish? Personally I don’t believe either cultures are truly evil, because I don’t believe that people themselves can be wholly evil. Some are just worse than others, and ‘evil’ is just another way to broadly describe something as mostly bad or negative for humanity. But in the real use of the word evil, it would be something that’s irredeemably harmful for not just humanity but all life. A moral failing of the highest and most reprehensible degree. Something that even Christianity for all its barbarism and Christ himself believes is never something that can happen with people, if you just forgive and turn away from ‘sin’ or harmful behaviour (such as cannibalism or human sacrifice, enslavement of others, r4pe, all other kinds of mischief and mayhem), you can be redeemed. The Aztec were the most powerful group in America and pretty sure they would have conquered the entire North and South America if it weren’t for Christopher Columbus. Once they ran out of other tribes to sacrifice, they would move north or south. Thousands in just a few days is enormous amount.
I hope you mean because of Columbus discovering the Americas to the wider world. Columbus had zero to do with the Aztecs or Incas.
Wars for conquest and wars to collect sacrifices tended to be two different things. The Aztecs conquered for any other reason conquering happened: to expand their influence, bolster their economy and power, and generally grow as a civilization. There were wars fought exclusively to collect human sacrifices but those tended to be different wars that acted on different rules
Of course not. Most of today's central Mexico and Central America - yeah. But the Spanish couldn't conquer the Apache in spite of massive tech advantage, the US could only after several bloody wars - the Aztecs just wouldn't make a dent into belicous and unruly Northern Mexico's/Southwest US' tribes territories. As for South America, the Aztecs would've been defeated by the Incan empire, the only example in human history of a successful Socialist state (and, truth be told, I believe a theocratic monarchy's the only way Socialism can kinda work, an atheist republic is way too unstable)
The Inca's may have something to say about that. The Aztecs vs. Incas. North America vs South America. That would have been as epic as the Punic Wars.
They probably wouldn't. The absence of beasts of burden made every far venture with an army a logistical nightmare. That's why the whole area was dotted with city-states but almost no multiple-city empires. And that's why the empires of the Americas were rising and falling for centuries without any one of them going much beyond the territory of their city-state. Incas were the only exception - they also had different conditions.
As a 65 year old American I want everyone to know it's OK to judge civilizations. Unfortunately colleges and public education in the West teach students that you CAN'T judge civilizations as if England and Mali are on the same moral level. This is to give up on humanity. Please remember that some civilizations are better than others.
Absolutely. North Korea is worse than the West, but the Westerners are probably the only People in the world who criticize themselves. Also, socialism does not work.
And in the West, many hate Western civilization, But in North Korea, they are forced to love theirs.
I agree. It also bothers the hell out of me when people look at bygone days and think the current morality is the morality of the bronze age. To understand history you have to be able to put yourself in the boots of those that lived before.
It’s also important to recognise that just because you yourself come from one civilisation region or another, that doesn’t inherently make you a good or bad person depending on how good or bad the civilisation was/is.
For example, their were plenty of bad horrible individuals in the Western Civilisation, despite it being generally regarded as good, and just because you come from a civilisation that has a negative reputation (such as the Aztecs in this case) that doesn’t make you just as bad or doomed to behave as bad as your ancestors civilisation(s).
Individuals are people that are worth judging based on their actions and opinions, not on their inalienable traits, like ethnicity, religion, background etc
Well than can we judge your civillization too,for example I heard in your country parents kiss themselves infront of their kids, wear bikinis infront of them, how is that appropriate? How the hell you think you are going to teach others morality when you yourself don't have one
This is a complicated question as a Mexican. I wouldn’t want to be sacrificed or killed by the Spanish sword. But I get your point. We can’t go backwards.
you would not be laid to the sword so long as you didnt kill your fellow man
How could it be complicated? You're a Mexican because of the Spanish, otherwise you'd be some sort of Indian believing in human sacrifice. Your genes are mostly Spanish, you speak Spanish and you live in a mostly Spanish culture, which is Christian.
I mean....your basically half Spanish and half Native OP. Just accept the good things about Aztec/Mayan culture (the food, cacao, the beautiful architecture in the Yucatan, etc) and accept the good things about the Spaniard culture (your mother language, your social system of governance, your religion, etc). Take note of the bad both sides did, and realize that you are your own person living in the PRESENT that can CHOOSE what you want to emulate about both lineages of your ancestors, and what you can just let stay as history.

Comparing lesser evil with more evil doesn't make it good.
Nor will it EVER make it go away. It is the Yin to Yang.
The Aztecs were cannibals.
Which christian tho. You can't say christian happily came to save the native american XD
non Christians thinking they are better than us..
we can see through them.. we can tell how miserable they are no matter how hard they try to hide it..
Sorry, I don't envy you..
christian killin billion of people in name of god. doing crusifications . christian russia now conquering ukraine christian. christian hitler etc
"The Aztecs were cannibals"
No.
@@erenjaeger1738 Some did though. Some native American teamed up with them. You know the whole "enemy of my enemy"
Sadly many liberals will say Aztecs.
Yep, they’re not the smartest bunch, but they may be the batch that take us down… sadly
Possibly. But more likely, they will reject the question. They will argue that the European Christians brought about physical genocide (through introduced diseases) and cultural genocide (through imposition of Christianity). If they DO say ''Aztecs'', they will argue that ALL Meso-American states understood and practised human sacrifice (true) and were accepting of the tribute system if it meant survival of themselves as a society on the whole.
They say that only because so many Christians are total hypocrites.
I’d say neither.
So many brain dead conservatives will say christian XD
It’s funny because even my left friend admits this and we talk about it. It surprised me because I (clearly) expected her to be on the side of “give it back!” but she fully said “how are we supposed to give land back? That’s literally impossible” girl I almost started crying 😭

Ok so where am I supposed to go back to? Germany, Poland, Switzerland, Sweden? Oh, my kids need to add Ireland and England to that list. Where?
There are 3 kinds of people in the world. Those who are good at math and those who are not.
😅
It is easy for white people to say that there's no such thing as white privilege as you are the ones benefitting from the power structures. Till this day people continue to make a deal out of my Hispanic name, making me feel "othered". But if my name was John Smith, I'm sure I would never have any problems. And yes I'm very good at math

The Aztecs were "late arrivers" at the "Meseta Central" (central Mexico now), and pushed out the Tepanecas to found Tenochtitlan City only 200+ years before the arrival
of the Castillian (Spanish) conquistadores. They expanded rapidly, dominating many neighboring indian nations, from which they requested tribute. These nations feared
the Aztecs because they would capture their worriers and sacrifice them by ripping apart the heart of each. They were merciless. There was absolutely no sense of brotherhood among
the Aztecs and the other nations. T H E A Z T E C S W E R E T H E N A Z I S of the time.. Now Mexicans venerate the Aztecs... why ? ? ? ? ? ? ?
Because they are seen as mighty warriors and conquerors in their own right, and most of our culture is derived from them with Spanish influences so they’re also seen as our mother culture. Just like the Scandinavians are still proud of their pagan Viking ancestors even though they went around pillaging and destroying their neighbors, its culture that we still carry in our dna
@@SarcasticEnchilada So... Germans today should be proud of the Nazis who destroyed Europe, Germany iteself and murdered 6 million Jews ? Com'on man, it is time for Mexicans to repudiate the Aztecs. Not DNA, shameful past.
I'm native and I love Christ and colonization ❤
It's so easy for the Left to judge the past with today's values. But let's see them equally apply that to all countries and peoples.
Yep. We all know that will never ever happen.
In the 15th and 16th centuries neither would be a good choice. While Christians were not practicing human sacrifice, they were prolific killers in the Americas. And they like the Aztecs practiced slavery.
"So these dudes in shiney suits are going to stop the dudes with the Jaguar heads from cutting my family's hearts out? Aight. I can vibe with that."
The Aztec capital was built in the middle of a lake, the only way to it was by bridge, so most of the armored Spanish and their horses were simply shoved overboard and sunk to the bottom 😂
4:52 Cortez was a hero. To both the Spanish and the local tribes.
Well' he wasn'n precisely a good guy... but damn, the man had balls of steel!!!
0:32 Israel is NOT a western country
I love Israel
They’re a colony of European Jews larping as the Semitic heirs of the land, when in fact the real semites have converted to Islam through the years and are the very people they’re subjugating
It is, a democracy with with freedom of religionand speech and rule of law.
Westerners live in it? Is it not

As someone living in the Black Hills - BRAVO. You hit that nail. Unpopular Facts hurt.
Facts?? Hehe you are funny.
This is the most unapologetically discriminatory video I’ve seen all year. Regardless of how brutal the Aztec’s were to their own people and their neighbours (can’t have been THAT much worse than the Mesopotamian’s, Egyptians, Nubians, Romans, Greeks, Israelites, etc), there is no scientifically possible universe out there in which the slaughtering of 9 million+ people and the near complete and utter erasure of an entire culture and religion is even slightly justifiable.
The Spanish committed a genocide, the West African slaves they brought into the carnage didn’t consent to fight in their war and Christianity incentives people to demonise and sometimes even kill innocent women, people of colour, homosexual people and transsexual people. End of discussion.
Could you explain to me how a handful of Spaniards were able to eliminate 9 million natives with 16th century warfare technology?
Deaths from disease do not count as genocide, since they were involuntary and unexpected. No one had enough medical knowledge to foresee or avoid it.
In the African slave trade, Spain was much less active than Portugal, the Netherlands or England.
Was Juan Garrido an example of those Africans who opposed collaborating with the colonialists?
@@fedevida1951u just imperialist symphatizer u can't fool nobody
Why can't we just say that all colonization is evil?
Instead of comparing which one is worse?
It was all pretty terrible and heartbreaking 😭😭😭😭
I found this video very insightful. Not only does it help us generally understand how to reconcile past colonialism, but it’s a good conversation starter on how we should act to either support or oppose current colonialism efforts such as Russia in Ukraine. While the left seems to oppose colonialism in general, what is it doing when opposing “colonialism” that established the nation of Israel on one hand while they promote the illegal colonialism of the US by allowing migrants of all types to pass through the southern border illegally for political purposes on the other hand.
