Thanks Cody!!! I told you this is a great lens and it's definitely 'differen't to the Pana-Leica Nocticron in terms of image render for sure. I personally prefer this though the Pana-Leica may appear sharper from distant because of the optical design. But when you look closer, they are equally sharp at the focused area. This is where the 'feathered' bokeh taken place and renders the out of focus area smoothly and a great portrait trait to my taste.

Hi there, the lens has as manual clutch where you can turn to autofocus and manual focus by sliding the focusing ring forward or backward. It works for both stills and videos.
Recently found this channel as I'm interested in adding a m4/3 setup to my bag. Brilliant production, content and bite size videos and thoroughly entertaining. I've hit subscribe and look forward to watching more :-) I'm still trying to convince myself I need an OM-D-EM1-MkII with 12-100 and 300mmF4 for compact travel and wildlife trekking. Oh, Charli is amazing too and certainly would pick if I wanted to do portrait work
Thanks Phil! Much appreciated your kind words! The combo you mentioned is great for travel and wildlife especially, but you may also consider 12-40 2.8, 40-150mm 2.8 with MC14 1.4x teleconverter too! they are even smaller and faster!
So I’m at a cross roads. I’ve been shooting with a mft system for a few years now and have acquired a number of the oly pro lenses, though still missing the 17 and 45 (1.2). About a year ago I also purchased a full frame canon eos r and have acquired a number of their L lenses. The difference in ff to mft is undeniable but the shooting experience and FPS on my LUMIX G9 are far superior. My predicament lies in getting either the 17/45 combo from oly vs their equivalent but far older Canon EF glass - the 35 and 85 (1.4) price is still of course in play. I’d love to see a comparison of your 45 1.2 oly to its FF equivalent.. but have yet to see a RUclips give it a try 😎
Great review and many lovely photos of Charli (but it's hard to take a bad photo of her!!) Olympus also do a very highly acclaimed 45mm f1.8 for approximately one sixth of the cost of the f1.2, albeit not environmentally sealed, but I wonder what would be your opinion? Is it as good or is it better? And is it worth nearly six times the price?
The different between affordable and pricey lens usually in term of generate more cleaner image quality, more beautiful skin tones, lovely rendering and low purple fringing at widest open.
Thanks Chris for watching the review mate! Charli is indeed beautiful and talented! Ok, in terms of worth, to me, as a working professional, we will pay anything (if one can afford) for a faster lens because the way we work, at locations, tricky lighting situations, a faster lens give us valuable options, not just the bokeh and depth of field. Having a faster lens (aperture) also means I can use lower ISO if needed to give a cleaner image overall. So, to me it's worth six times the price. In terms of optical quality and build quality, it is better for sure, six times more, perhaps not. But it does come with weather-sealing (great for location shoot again), faster focusing motor, extra function button (I love that for manual focus) and that manual focus clutch that's great for both stills and videos. But for more causal shooters, the 45mm 1.8 is a great choice and light too, I will take that for holiday and travel :)
TheAgam96 Thanks for watching our video and support :) Well, the 1.8 version is compact and light, perfect for travel. It’s a good portrait lens but in terms of optical performance, it’s probably 90%. The Centre is sharp but the 1.2 version is really designed for using the higher resolution shots and it’s well corrected lens. 1.8 is great and value for money if you are on a budget and not using the weather seal and that extra stop of light (or extra blur). Hope I answer your question. You can certainly do many of what I did in this video with the 1.8 version :)
Red35 Photography Thanks! The only lens for portrait that I have is an old Minolta 58mm f/1.4. (116mm on m43) Ok, it is manual and don't have all the technology of a new lens, but it gives me an idea of "soft focus" at 1.4, I think like the olympus 1.2, you talk about this around 8:00 in your video. Also the Megapixels questions, I agree, here in Italy we call that Megapizze 😁. So, last question, I have the 25mm 1.8 and the Minolta 58mm 1.4 manual. The question is: need I a 45mm for portrait? There is much difference in terms of focal length from a 90mm to a 116mm? Maybe the panasonic 42,5mm 1.7 is better or with the Olympus camera work better an olympus lens? Thanks for all
Well, if you want AF, then the 45mm will do the job nicely and fast. It has the classic look with modern sharpness. 45mm will always be more flattering than 42.5mm in my opinion. the 58mm 1.4 is great though it's from another era so it won't be as sharp when compare to more modern glass.
Hi Tae, yes sure, we have that lens and we will do a video in due course! Hope you subscribe and stay tuned for this release in the near future :) Thanks again!
I know this is a year late, but as I own the 75mm I just wanted to say it's a beautiful lens! Stupidly sharp and while it is a long lens. It's pretty much like shooting with a 135mm lens on a 35mm camera, which just a beautiful focal length. For its price, get it hands down!
Great review, I'm would like to know which lenses best choice would be for gh5 between Olympus 45mm f/1.2 PRO and Panasonic Nocticron 42.5mm f/1.2 My uses 90% for video. Until now I was sure I'm buying Panasonic lens... and now come new model but Olympus and its looks good. Need advise
Thanks mate. Well, either are great lenses and very different look. I personally prefer the more natural look from Olympus but Panasonic is very sharp, a little too sharp for me. Another thing to consider is that Olympus’s manual focus ring is just great, much better than Panasonic so if you use MF a lot, Olympus may be better for operation.
Great video great photos... I realy fell in love with that lens and now I'm thinking of saling my Fuji 56mm and get the Oly for my GH5. But I love my X-T2... 🤔. Shit... Should I ??? And of course I'll sign the petition to get more Charleen ... 😊
Laurent Casado thanks for liking our video!! Haha Charli is very happy and surprised by all the love and support!! She will be back for sure. Lens wise, well I gave up my Canon’s legendary 85mm 1.2L II, that’s says it all :) but I do miss it yet now I am using more and more M43 Olympus so I don’t need to keep things that I don’t use :) have a nice day mate
So now my options are even harder! Those sample pics were great!! Could you do a three way test - Voigtlander and panny leica 42.5 vs the oly 45? I'm unsure which to go for, but the oly is tempting me slightly more....i'm currently on a gh5 with plans to buy a 2nd body in 2018, an olympus of some sort, not sure which just yet.
Thanks John!! Well, for a start, I can tell you straight away that if you plan to shoot wide open, the Voigtlander is nowhere near as sharp and solid as either Panny Leica nor Olympus. Are you planning to use MF for both stills and video? In terms of DoF, you may get just a tiny more with Voigtlander but only just, second is actually Olympus due to it's new optical design, bokeh balls appear to be larger than those on Panny Leica. Both Voigtlander and Olympus have a classic film look while Panny Leica is definitely more modern (rendering). I personally prefer Olympus for that matter. You probably know by now that Voigtlander, despite its 0.95 aperture, it isn't quite usable due to its soft characteristics unless you are going for the dreamy look, if you want some sharp results, you need to stop the lens down which then the other two lenses may give you better results.
I own the Voigtlander 42.5mm and Olympus 45mm f1.8 and f1.2. No Nocticron at this time, though. The Voigtlander renders like a classic SLR lens with fairly low contrast, organic rendering and soft but characterful bokeh. By comparison, the f1.2 Pro lens has a more modern rendering, and more smooth, almost featureless bokeh. At f1.2, the Voigtlander is sharp and looks superb, although it renders highlights with octagonal shapes. Stopped down even further, it creates very pronounced sunstars, which the Olympus does not. Manual focus is more precise and smooth with the Voigtlander, but that is to be expected. Focus throw is shorter on the Olympus, but with practice, it is usable for manual focus pulling. I find myself using the Olympus for the convenience of autofocus and lighter weight. The Voigtlander can get a bit front heavy by comparison. But if I want a classic rendering that looks artistic and high quality, I go with Voigtlander.
Hi Luis, thanks for watching our video! Well, frankly you have to answer that yourself. I can give you some advice however. Both lenses (or in fact three 17mm, 25mm and 45mm) are all great! 25mm is bang in the middle and definitely great as a versatile general standard prime. I love using mine for 'everything'! 45mm is great as a medium tele, great for detail landscape, head or head & shoulder shots. 25mm can do the same actually though I would avoid head shots because of the focal length isn't the best for that. head and shoulder is ok. Then because 25mm is a standard focal length and you can use it for almost all the time and still have the capability to isolate background if you wish. 45mm is of course longer and definitely has better bokeh (or more visible). So it depends on what you shoot most and decide which one you want to go for.
Great lens but the cost is out of most people's reach. I have the 45mm f/1.8 and recently purchased the TTArtisans 50mm f/1.2 for the time I need some extra light or extra bokeh. The total of those two lenses cost me less than £200. Of course this is a pro lens but I'm glad to have saved over £500 with my purchases :)
I am glad you have found a new muse and model for your reviews, though you were a bit sillier than usual. I was starting to miss Paulina. Nice review of the lens. Thanks!
LOL Michael :D Thanks! Our channel is still evolving and currently working around our contacts for guest models and in general. We are hoping 2018 will be our break through year and I am so happy to have so many supporters so early on, really appreciated mate!
Hello! Nice review! I do have a question, if it's possible for you to give me an answer, I'm looking for a lens that'll use mostly for video on a Gh5, I was thinking to the Olympus 40-150mm f2.8 pro, the Olympus 45mm f1.2 or the Panasonic Leica 42.5mm f1.2! Ca you tell me witch one will have the more noticeable background compression, is the 40-150mm have more than the two others on 1.2, the focal length is compensating to have a much more compression? Thank you for your time! Loving your channel!
Hi Mircea, thanks for watching our videos and support to our channel! Much appreciated! Most of our videos are shot with 25mm with the occasional use of 45mm. In terms of ‘compression’ it’s a focal length issue so the longer the better. But in terms of background blur, subject isolation, the 45mm 1.2 is quite good and better than 40-150mm in that regard but by 100, the difference is minimal between 45mm 1.2 and the zoom at 2.8. However, do consider two things, first, you need to work on your distance with the zoom while the 45mm/42.5mm allows you to get in tighter space while still having the isolation. Second, at 2.8, you are losing a few stops of lights and it means you need higher ISO to compensate. Between 42.5 and 45mm, I will choose 45mm as it’s slightly longer hence still better and couple with the manual focus ring, it’s great for videos too!
Thanks a lot for your answer, i was leaning my self for the two 45 and 42.5, the only thing that keeps me from going 100% for the olympus is the OIS with the panasonic! Do you think it worth buying the Panasonic because it has the OIS? Thank you again!
Hi Jimmy, could you remind us the lens that you were used for beautiful model - Charli on 2:17 to 2:28? As on 15:22 says, EM1 II + Pana-Leica...25 & 42.5.. I am thinking to get a Olympus 45mm f1.8 or the pricey f1.2...
Hi Raymond, all photos you see here are shot with Olympus 45mm 1.2 Pro lens. Our end credit simply says which lenses we used to 'film' this episode :) Hope you don't get confused :D The 1.8 version is very nice and compact, as a professional, I need to squeeze every ounce of the performance from the system and the 1.2 allows me to just get that bit more from both the sensor and the lens. The bokeh, is nicer on the 1.2 also when shot wide open :)
Really nice review! love your editing btw. Please consider to make a workflow or something. Or sell actions, i totally would buy it :D greets from germany
Red35 Photography then totally do it! I'm sure many viewers would like to see how you get to those nice results! PS i can't wait to shoot with this lens. I hope I'll enjoy it as much as you do! Greets from Hamburg! :)
Cheers mate for watching! Not sure about EFM camera?? It's a native M43 lens so it will fit Olympus, Panasonic, Blackmagic.. etc only with compatible mount
Very well done you guys. The lens is very smooth, so is the beautiful model. It would be nice if you can compare 45mm f1.2pro with Olympus 75mm F1.8, which i think is the masterpiece of the present line-up of Olympus portrait lens.
Thanks mate!! This is just an awesome lens. I will add this to my comparison list for sure and the Olly 75mm is a very popular portrait/medium tele lens. I love it but as it's almost double the focal length, you will certainly have a different compression between the two, even though the aesthetic of out of focus area is similar at wide open.
Thanks Roman!! We will have a lot more in coming months, just trying to find time to do them all :) I personally use my 25mm almost daily and it's been my best working lens so far. But I am looking forward to the new 17mm too as that's actually my golden days work horse focal length in full frame :)
Roman Geber Hey Roman, thanks man! I, too, am very keen on the 17mm because 35mm is my usual focal length when I am shooting full frame for my documentary work :) will let you know of course!
Hi , Can you make a video and compare 45mm F1.2 PRO with 75mm f1.8 ? I have 45mm F1.8 and 75mm f1.8, but I am not sure if buying 45mm F1.2 PRO can be beneficial for me.
vamoalla9 we shot everything with Olympus OMD EM1 II unless stated otherwise in the video. We put all the details in the credits at the of each videos.
@@Red35Photography thanks! I really like the pq of your video. It has a cinematic look to my eye. How do you think the M.Zuiko f/1.2 Pro lens you are reviewing here would perform in comparison? (for video). Nice presentation btw. I know this is an older video, but I like how you use Charli to give the review/informtion to instead of directly to the person viewing the video. Very cool. New subscriber.
theory8sf It’s all about adapting, what many people don’t understand is how you can achieve good shots with composition. I use many different systems professionally and M4/3 is one of them. They are good, small and light. And these photos just tell you that it can also do the ‘big boy’ thing :)
what a beautiful model, Charli's so lovely. Feature her more on your videos please. By the way, I'm considering upgrading to this from my Olympus 45mm f1.8. The f1.2 pro is really tempting, but it's quite expensive. I'm still undecided.
I do get you my friend. Jumping from 1.8 and 1.2 doesn't sound a lot in terms of light gathering but like anything in photography, the optical performance is 'what you pay is what you get'. The 1.2 Pro is definitely another league above, optical and physical :) If you do go ahead, you won't regret it!
oh yes I just followed her IG. I've also followed yours, great to find out that you were from hong kong too. (noted that hk flag on your IG). It's almost 2 am here.
Hi Gyte, thank you for watching our video! Well, a short answer is not. You will not be able to achieve the same DoD as full frame. This can be said for other cropped sensor system or larger format (which goes opposite) when shooting the same distance. So the equivalent bokeh will look more like f/2.4 than f/1.2 on full frame so you will get more separation from a full frame system at the same distance. Though it depends on your adaptability and you can use a longer focal length to compensate by standing further away to achieve the similar effect if you wish. It's all about learning how to use it on various different systems, whether it's full frame, M4/3, APS-C or even medium format.
I would like to see Olympus answer to Nikons 105mm f1.4. So a 50 or 55mm f 095 :) Portrait master lens with creamy smooth bokeh. And maybe a fast 80-100 f 1.2. Hell yes go for it we now have the large EM1X to handle these babies.
Hey, thanks for watching our review!!! Yes, this lens works very well with GH5 :) Although Nocticron has built-in IS but it works independently to GH5's IBIS so it's either using the GH5's IS or the lens but not both (no dual IS). Hence this lens will work just as good as Nocticron. Plus if you are using manual focus for video, you can't beat the manual clutch on Olympus lenses :)
The Nocticron will give you dual IS on the GH5 and with the latest firmware dual IS2. The Olympus would be body stabilisation only which is still very good.
Hi. I really like your videos. Could you please give (either in a comment here, or in a new video), some insight into your approach to colors and curves and the like in-camera when shooting Olympus cameras? Your pictures have a very nice feel to them color-wise and texture-wise. i'd love to understand how.
Thanks mate. For a start, Olympus cameras give me a very good 'base' colours to work with. Then all I need is to tune up the curves and a bit of usual highlights and shadows. I do a little bit of split tones but only very marginal and mild.
@@Red35Photography Thanks for the fast reply! Not to be selfish, but.... .I wonder if you could expand upon your split tone approach a bit. do you do this with Color Creator in-camera, in Olympus Workspace, or in some other editor? Thx!
@@Red35Photography A true pro! LOL. This in itself is a valuable insight. I know a lot of Fujifilm shooters are smitten with their JPEGs, and I was curious as to whether that fantastic look (obviously more than one lol) you achieve was rooted in the Oly onboard tools themselves. So, for you, the Oly experience is probably more about size and comfort than JPEG engine features. Thx again mate!
@@kevinstrachan741 No worry. Oly JPEG engine is good but I always want to maximise the files so I rarely, if ever, use JPEG unless it's for demo purposes.
Thanks Hao for watching :) Yeah, I was in love with the Pana-Leica 42.5 when I used it until I tried this 45mm. It's more of a personal taste and I prefer how the Olympus draws the picture :) Don't get me wrong though, the 42.5mm is an absolute awesome lens indeed :)

Great video Jimmy! The bokeh is really great. 1.2 seems to be the magic number. Is supply good for these lenses?
Thanks Paul! Well, it's still under pre-order at the moment but it should be available in the next week or two I believe :)
Thanks Chris! That's so lovely of you! :)
Many compliments , really a nice review 👍
Cristiano Baruffaldi Thanks Cristiano!! Much appreciated mate!!
het zal wel weer een SUPER lens zijn van Olympus , Ik ben niet anders gewend, ben zeer te vreden over Olympus grts Miel van Gerven
Thanks Miel!! Yes this is a stunning piece of glass and certainly delivers as a portrait lens. To me, it's the BEST Olympus portrait lens ever!
I love this video and the photos. Is the 45mm f1.8 good close to the new 1.2? I don't have money for the 1.2, so the question... Thanks
Can you review Olympus 75mm f1.8?
Would it be a good portrait lens or too long range?
Hi Tae, yes sure, we have that lens and we will do a video in due course! Hope you subscribe and stay tuned for this release in the near future :) Thanks again!
I know this is a year late, but as I own the 75mm I just wanted to say it's a beautiful lens! Stupidly sharp and while it is a long lens. It's pretty much like shooting with a 135mm lens on a 35mm camera, which just a beautiful focal length. For its price, get it hands down!
There is definitely some kind of chemistry between these two ....!
It is called friendship...
Excellent review. Nicely shot and edited as well.
Thanks John for your comment and support :) Greetings from London
Again a great review, thanks!
Thanks Jess!! Much appreciated and glad you like the review! It was a fun shoot with Charli!
I own the 25 1.2 & it’s stunning. This lens appears to perform the same. Charlie is stunning too😉...BTW...👽
Joseph Soriano Thanks Joseph and thank you for watching our video! Glad you like it and Charli :)
Thank you for answer, it's was very helpful 👍👍👍
But I think the panny has IS so that might be something
I love Charleen. Looking forward your more videos haha
Thanks Sean!! Remember to support her by following her IG :)
Thank you so much! :)
In love with her and with the lens.
I have searched everywhere for some examples that actually shows off what this lens is made for. Portraits!
Any photo would look good when your subject looks so nice!!
😂
@14:13 - - I love this photo... she looks awesome.
Hi! I'm ready to invest in a Pro prime lense. Can't decide between 25mm f1.2 or 45mm f1.2. Any thoughts? Help me decide. Thank you.
Charleen is so amazing girl!
Thank you :) Merry Christmas~!!
Lens is dope but can we get some specs on your bluejean leather jacket??? I must have one of those!
Thanks for watching our video and support :) I've never thought about making a workflow hahah, just the way I work. Greeting from London :)
Red35 Photography then totally do it! I'm sure many viewers would like to see how you get to those nice results! PS i can't wait to shoot with this lens. I hope I'll enjoy it as much as you do! Greets from Hamburg! :)
Thank you very much for the video. Is there a chance that this will fit the efm camera with adapter ?
Cheers mate for watching! Not sure about EFM camera?? It's a native M43 lens so it will fit Olympus, Panasonic, Blackmagic.. etc only with compatible mount
Just curious to what camera you shoot your video's with.
Thanks Jerry for watching. We shoot everything with EM-1 II in 4K
Thank you!! :)
Charli is gorgeous!
Love these f1.2 lenses....but I use them for indoor sports....😊
Hi ,
Can you make a video and compare 45mm F1.2 PRO with 75mm f1.8 ?
I have 45mm F1.8 and 75mm f1.8, but I am not sure if buying 45mm F1.2 PRO can be beneficial for me.
May I ask what camera and lens you are shooting this video on?
vamoalla9 we shot everything with Olympus OMD EM1 II unless stated otherwise in the video.
Great review! Considering this for my next lens! Also.. the dude at 9:50 trying to show off.. 😂🤣 great addition
Thanks John for watching!!! Yes this is really a masterpiece and I personally like it a lot!
No thank you! I’m starting to do more videos too which it seems like you guys use 85mm equivalent too for videos!!
John Ventura haha yeah Tracey love using 85mm for videos, nice separation
Red35 Photography just wondering; do you think that a 12-35 2.8 with an 85 1.2 pair great together or do you have another suggestion in mind?
John Ventura depends on what you shoot:) yes that’s a great combo. We prefer faster primes like 12mm 2.0, 25mm 1.4 and 45mm 1.2, also 40-150 2.8
Please also compare with the Voigtländer lens.
Thanks for watching and we will see what we can do :)
Really great video review, Thanks
Thanks Pablo!! Much appreciated mate for your support :)
Nice review thanks
Thank you :)
Thank you for your guidance
Ok im getting it. Done. Decided.
Enjoy your new lens! Let me know how you get on :)
This video makes me want to switch to micro 4/3! The big bulk of my DSLR is getting much now!
theory8sf It’s all about adapting, what many people don’t understand is how you can achieve good shots with composition. I use many different systems professionally and M4/3 is one of them. They are good, small and light. And these photos just tell you that it can also do the ‘big boy’ thing :)
I agree and the photos that you show is proof of that! Great work!
Thanks :) Have a great day!!
what a beautiful model, Charli's so lovely.
Oh, yes, I will let Charli know :) She's got a lot of compliment already, remember to follow her IG!
oh yes I just followed her IG. I've also followed yours, great to find out that you were from hong kong too. (noted that hk flag on your IG). It's almost 2 am here.
Thanks Wesley! Yeah I'm from HK but have been here for over 24 years! Still goes back almost every year. Can't get away with all those lovely food!
Have you used the 75mm 1.8?
great review again!
Would you ever consider reviewing the baby brother of this lens, the Olympus 45mm f1.8?
Dong Cap yes stay tuned :)
Thanks for the samples.
You are welcome Taran :) Have a good weekend!
With correct manual focus this lens produces beautiful, accurate, images.
beautiful photos and super talented model :)
Aww, thanks Magnus mate!! Charli is indeed very talented and beautiful :)
Thank you :)
hey pls answer me pls, does it do FULL BODY shots, with bokeh similar to full frame sensor 85mm lens?
Great video, subscribed!
Thanks Borja!!!! Much appreciated, have a good day!
She looks like Rachel Weisz.
I'm hoping for an Alien themed shoot now :D
Can you review sigma 56mm f1.4 pleaseeeeee
Really nice model! You should work with Charleen in future. At least when reviewing portrait lenses … ;)
Don't worry Christian, she will be back for more I assure you :) Thanks for watching our review!! Stay tuned for more!
Thank you so much! :)
So if I act like I'm coming to fight you, you're going to chuck the camera at me? OK! LETS DO THIS! Free camera!
What is the 45mm in full frame or crop sensor terms.
ruffdraft 90mm
@@Red35Photography Ok that's great. Thanks Jimmy. Stay blessed. Catch you soon hopefully.
ruffdraft sure thing! Thanks!
Great video thanks.
Thanks Tel for watching and support!!
want both, but they are crazy expensive.
LOL 😂😂
I bought both.
How well would this work for the GH5? Hmmm very tempting for a portrait lens. But that $$$$$ 😭😭
Hey, thanks for watching our review!!!
DMC-G80/G81/G85 supports Dual IS too!
i would like to download the presets you used for these pics :-(
They are trade secrets
i love your double denim! at 03:24
Haha, thanks! I do my my denims :) You will see a whole lot more! Most of my videos feature my favourite jeans and truckers!
Thx!
No, I don't do anything in-camera. I shoot RAW and edit on Adobe LR
Lovely lens, but it won't tempt me to cheat on my Nocticron.
6:08 Oops!
Did someone see also Juliette Lewis in her?
I ship you two ❤❤❤❤
Thanks!!
I prefer the Panasonic leica 42.5mm F1.2
Thanks Hao for watching :) Yeah, I was in love with the Pana-Leica 42.5 when I used it until I tried this 45mm. It's more of a personal taste and I prefer how the Olympus draws the picture :) Don't get me wrong though, the 42.5mm is an absolute awesome lens indeed :)
using 4/3 format (now M43 system) over 10 years, the main reason is the Olympus.if I did not have PL 42.5mm I will buy this one,haha..(I love the 25mm 1.2).Any way, looking forward your 17mm 1.2 review.
05:30 Jimmy, don't hit the mugger with your camera...............that is what tripods are for.
