I bought the 45mm late 2020 and it has created some of the best memories of my family and my dog. So many people ask what lens is that and love to share that it's a 45mm from a m43 system
Yep one of the best lenses period! Super sharp, weight is like a feather and you are right Jimmy. The black version of this lens on a black OMD body is stealthy and cool! Great video among many that you have made!
True. It's great on the EM10 mark ii. So is the 17mm/1.8. The feel that I get is that the images are much bigger than the lens. Out of focus background blue is gorgeous on the 45 and pretty nice even on the 17, which is something I noticed just eight days ago on 29 July when shooting some pleasing hanging leaves against a church in the background.
@@davebellamy4867 For sure mate! I had the 17mm too at one stage and great lens. These days I'm mostly using the 25mm 1.8 as I find it just right for me.
I am primarily a Fuji and Nikon shooter, but got a Panasonic M4/3 body for the IBIS (for video)- I paired it with the Olympus 45 1.8 and voila what a beautiful rendition the lens has - I havent used it much but it looks a really nice lens, and I got it supercheap through a deal during Christmas.
A very good deal indeed when $250 -- really like the Olympus 45mm f1.8. The little guy performs! Also liking the Panasonic 25mm f1.7 at $99 or $149. Both are great little prime lenses at a low price. I have used both for street photography and landscape shots. True it is tight, but it depends on if you are a wide shooter, or prefer more shots narrow. I find the kits OK for the little bit of wide shots I do. I bet that Olympus 60mm macro is great bang for buck, when on sale too!
Great lens/ great review , I have been trying to persuade my brother in law to buy one for the past 3 years. Incredible bargain, I do recall at one point Currys cleared them for just £109.!!!
I own this lens, I'v had it for about a year & a half now. I got lucky & picked it up for just under 200€. I can fully back up what you are saying, this lens is superb! It's so good, I cannot justly getting a more expensive 45mm lens. As a hobbyist, this is definitely my favourite lens, if not the best lens that I own.
I have this lens and it is sharper than my Panasonic 30mm macro at F2.8. So, you are getting macro level sharpness with the 45mm f1.8 Olympus. At f1.8, it is a little bit soft, but still good.

I will take it over any of the pro lenses hands down; is low glass so gives images dripping in microtones which you won't get from any of the pro lenses. This lens is so sharp that it will give a X3 crop (on a good contrasty subject it will take x4 if you are careful). This gives a digital equivalent zoom range of 90-270mm with an option on 360mm. I see all the DSLR rigs at the zoo with huge lenses and Google, they get very little; I see a leopard or such hiding behind a branch, I flip up the screen on my GX9 and hold it down by my knee and squeeze the shutter with X2 tap the screen and there is the cat (OK I may turn the screen a little too where the big snappers are standing but I'm human giggles). This lens is a perfect complement to my 17mm F1.8; short zoom is provided by my TG-3 slipped in my coat pocket ;-)
In John Lewis & Jessops, this lens is around £280 which isn't exactly "budget", though it is cheaper if used. Xiaomi the smartphone manufacturer have their version of this micro four thirds lens which is branded as Xiaoyi; 45m f1.8 for less than £100. There's a few reviews for it online.
I think cheap is good, especially since you won’t find a 90 or 85 lens on a full frame for the same price. And you know what for basketball season it really does produce great basketball shots under the rim, and being small, well you have no problems with security. I know no one would ever think about that but it is an option.
I liked that lens when I bought it. It was small-ish, relatively cheap (by m43 standards) and delivered pleasing overall images. Classic lens, like the Lumix 20mm, and everything m43 is about. But the 75mm f1.8 killed it for me. I haven't used the 45mm in years.
LOL we love the 75mm too and it's also very well build, metal and all, but I still think this tiny 45mm is cool (and cheap) which produces very awesome images, no brainer if you want something light and cheap to travel with :)
Your silver lens looks ok when it is attached to the black camera body. I have a silver Olympus 45mm F1.8 & black Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mk I, and both of them look ugly when they are attached together (based on my taste) 😅
I've got one and it's a fine lens. There's something about the culture of many RUclips photography gear reviewers that requires them to be half-apologetic admitting that a $350 USD lens is a pretty good performer and you can do great work with it. I've had a few damn lean years myself, don't mind admitting, and I've had magazine covers and gallery shows I shot with a kit lens, no lie. About 85 percent of the gear you can buy is fine. I've got some budget for gear now but if you don't, get this or the Panny 1.7 and don't look back, you're in good shape. Back during the real serious lockdowns in the States I researched and bought a bunch of vintage manual Nikon portrait lenses and wow are they sweet. There's just no need to spend a ton of money. There just isn't.
Will you also consider the 17mm f1.8 a budget m43 lens? I'm thinking of getting a used one for portrait (or environmental portrait). Will you do a review on this?
How did you know?! I literally bought this lens off Amazon this morning for $350CAD. It's my second time buying this lens but I'm hoping the focal length will work for me this time around.
Oh really ahahah ok ok, shame you are not in the UK otherwise, you could use our discount code :) Good luck with the lens and hope you get some great shots!
Thanks for video... It is truly a lovely little lens... is there any chance you could do a video on your post processing workflow? I love the final results you are getting from the olympus... I have been shooting with the olympus for a few months and have been really pleased with results i am getting on fabrics, flowers, etc... but i have been struggling to get pleasing skins tones... a post production video in relation to portraiture from em1ii files would be greatly appreciated... thanks again for all your top quality uploads...
Hi Noah, thank you a lot for your compliment! You will have to stay tuned because we are planning on some tutorial videos to help all of our followers improve on photography, film making, editing and post processing.
Olympus is giving away this lens for free with the E-PL8 right now. I am wondering if I should go for it. (I am shooting with Canon at the moment, but looking to get into MFT.)
This is a great little lens and E-PL8 is a capable and portable camera. Are you UK base? I am not sure the street price at the moment but I do have a discount for you if you shop at the Olympus UK online shop (JIMMY15) at checkout :)
@3:55.. are some of the best portraits you guys will see from this lens hehe. THanks Jimmy. I had to buy the 45 f1.2 cause I know client will see how tiny this is and laugh unfortunately!! :((
Hi bro, i have a question for you. Which one is the best for portrait lens 45 mm f/1.8 or 60mm f/2.8 macro? This is very important for me so please answer =)
I’m a Nikon FF and crop sensor Fuji camera owner, but I love this btw. I have a great range of lenses some over £3k, but I love some of my plastic mount lenses
I wonder why doesn't Sigma lenses get attention they deserve? With their fast f/1.4 16mm, 30mm and upcomig 56mm, they are very competitive considering cost is around same as olympus premium lenses. I would like to see you review those! :)
@@weizenobstmusli8232 Yeah that's true. I'd like to see how those lenses perform against Olympus pro line lenses. Those Sigmas cost half or even third of the price what Olympus pro lenses cost. And i think size is irrelevant in this comparison.
@@MoTTi543210 I'll respectfully disagree. Size is one of the main selling point of MFT, hence the "micro". The converter itself will almost be as big as Olly prime lenses. And if you know your way with second-hand purchases, price doesn't matter much. Cheers mate.
@@masterjeyt Thanks for your comment. I didn't get what you ment with converter? Sigma is selling those lenses on sony E-mount and MFT mount, so there is no need for any kind of adapters or so. If that is what you ment. But i do agree with you that main selling point of mft is size and oly prime lenses fit in that perfectly. And i want to say that Olympus 45mm 1.8 is superb lens. I luckily got it very cheap costing me only 130€ and it definitely takes most of the time on my camera than any other lens i own. Cheers!
Witch lense should I buy? Right now I am between this and the m.zuiko digital 25 mm f/1,8 lense, I am looking for good sharp quality in lower lighting, since I am going to photograph horses also in an indoor arena. Do you have other lense suggestions for a luminous lense that fits olympus pen e-pl8? (Would prefer it to be under 400 euros since I’m kinda broke)
Hi, sorry for being an ignorant, need to ask something. How to shoot with Fast Shutter speed low ISO and f1.8 without getting dark or underexposed shot? My epl +48mm f1.8 ISO would spike up to more than 6400 i have to compensate into slow shutter speed. Thanks
Hey Jimmy, if you had to choose between the 45mm vs the 75mm for portrait work, which one would you choose? Which one do you think gives the most pleasing results in terms of facial distortion and stuff? I have a 20mm for everyday stuff, but I’d like to get a dedicated portrait lens too. I tend to like the more compressed backgrounds, like a Tony Scott movie, but I just don’t know. What are your thoughts?
Hello 👋 You had no reply as nobody but you can reply to what are your tastes really Myself on full-frame, I absolutely love my Canon EF 135mm F/2 So will get an Olympus 75mm F/1.8 to replicate that But I already have the 45mm F/1.8 .. No-brainer as so cheap and small
@@GallicGarlic hello, honestly so much time had passed that I forgot I wrote this comment. At this point I’ve got the 45mm f1.8, 25mm f1.8, 12mm f2, and 40mm f1.4. It’s a kinda weird set, but it works for me. I’d still like to get the 75mm though as I like the compressed look; it reminds me of Tony Scott movies. Thank you for your reply though. On another note, right now as an amateur photographer I’m having a very difficult time getting people to model for me. I’ve put up posters at a few coffee shops and an art store, I’ve asked some coworkers at my factory too. But so far nobody will model for me even though I’m willing to pay ~$60/hour. I’ve had one person say yes twice, but they’ve flaked on me both times the day of the shoot. Maybe it’s because I live in a smaller city in the Midwest. Idk, but how are you supposed to build up a portfolio of portraits if nobody wants to get model for them?
how convinient. i have recently bought the pen-f and love it. my only lens that i got is the pana 20mm f1.7II and the cheap oly -150 zoom. this lens is currently sitting in my shopping basket on amazon. thanks for the review :)
Cheers Peter! Glad you enjoyed the review! You won't be disappointed with this lens! Well, if you are in the UK, don't forget to use our discount code :)
Why the hell did you waste your money buying another MFT Lens don’t you know that according to Tony & Chelsea MFT is dead. Quickly sell all your gear and start using FF before the bottom drops out the market. On a serious note all the Olympus 1.8 primes are great and suit the Pen F perfectly, love the video’s, keep up the good work.
Thanks Roger! I know... Tony has created a ripple of 'angers' from a few RUclipsrs and I've seen a few counter attacking their comments. hahah well. it's up for debate. However, I do they they went a little too far on claiming they are dying straight out and 'suggesting' people to go FF. I use FF and still have FF. But they are only reviewers, not a pro who makes money from photography. I, like many, who use M43 professionally see the benefits of such platform. So good luck with them.
I think its amazing that so many FF users slag of MFT, Personally I think that its the photographer that makes the picture not the gear they use although it does help to have good glass, I use MFT because the quality apart from very low light is every bit as good as anything on the market and for me the lack of weight and bulk means I always have my camera with me which never happen when I was using FF
Tony and Chelsea engage their mouths before their brains are in gear. personally I don't like either of them and their collective comments are irrelevant and total nonsense. They just like the sound of their own voices. A pair of idiots in my opinion.
They are click baiters and gear nerds. I questioned the reliability of their reviews on MFT and got a reply like: 'We have all the gears!' Really really unprofessional attitude.
Budget friendly, indeed. After helping a friend by buying 2 $100 WalMart gift cards from her, I was trying to find something to used them for. Luckily, I found the retail giant blowing out their Olympus equipment and got one for $200 - brand new, not used, not reconditioned. Cha ching!
I bought this lens twice, one second-handed and one brand new. But later I sold them out primarily because of the closest focus range is too long (50cm). I am thinking about the Pany 42.5mm F1.7 which has 30cm minimal focus range and cheap to afford.
Thanks for watching Joan. Yes, it doesn't focus as close as to some of the more modern M43 lenses but I never found it a problem, perhaps due to my use of the lens. In the UK, the Panasonic 42.5 is over 40% more expensive than Olly, and also bigger in size and slightly heavier. I do like that it has OIS but I don't need it on any of my M43 bodies so it not a selling point for me :) They are both capable and sharp but for me, the cheaper one wins as in terms of image quality, they are equal but one does it a lot cheaper, lighter and smaller :)
I never used this lens, but all I've heard is very positive. The only problem is that after shooting with the new 1.2 primes the only other interesting premium lens for me is the 75mm f/1.8.
Depth-of-field, and HYPERFOCUS FOCUSING with Oly Primes (sad) or are U running around in a Circle of Confusion (CoC)! I use my Pentax HD/DA LIMITED prime lens series (manual focus) on an original Pen and a OM-D E-M5 Mark II Limited with great success using a NOVOFLEX adapter. It's a relatively "inexpensive" prime alternative considering the great expense of Leitz/Leica and other premier brands. Some Voietlander lenses are reasonably priced but large. The Pentax lenses are smaller, perfectly sized and highlight Pentax's commitment and heritage to street photography. These are my favorites: HD DA 21mm F3.2 AL, HD DA 40mm F2.8 Pancake, HD DA 35mm F2.8 Macro, and HD DA 70mm F2.4. The Macro (now 70mm) and 70mm (now 140mm) are gems. Many might not know that during the film era, 135mm was considered a standard mid-tele. It was a prime requirement in UR collection. These are all metal construction (made in Vietnam), very well made, smooth operating, come with lens shades (do U use yours?) AND include DEPT-OF-FIELD SCALES, unlike the Olympus primes. And this is the BIG issue with the Oly primes (and others), no depth-of-field scales. Understating and working with depth-of-field, and HYPERFOCUS FOCUSING ( www.picturecorrect.com/tips/hyperfocal-focusing-photography-tips/ ) is an ESSENTIAL skill-set for becoming an outstanding photographer, opening grand doors to creativity and a guarantee not to miss the street shot. It's really the most important reason for using prime lenses (not considering personal placement and image quality improvement). It's about creativity, manipulating the light, and technically applying the digital equivalent of Ansel Adams Zone System to UR exposures. Without the scales most will be lost. Find several used primes such as the classic M42 or K Takumar's, or NIKKOR's and spend time developing depth of field, and HYPERFOCUS FOCUSING skills.
We have reviewed this lens already Billy! Check out our playlist and you will see that. We have 50 Olympus related videos on this channel!

45mm vs 56mm vs 75mm ?
Olympus is giving away this lens for free with the E-PL8 right now. I am wondering if I should go for it. (I am shooting with Canon at the moment, but looking to get into MFT.)
This is a great little lens and E-PL8 is a capable and portable camera. Are you UK base? I am not sure the street price at the moment but I do have a discount for you if you shop at the Olympus UK online shop (JIMMY15) at checkout :)
@@Red35Photography Yes, I'm in the UK. Thanks for the discount code and I love your videos. I will see if the code works with the free lens offer.
@@CrimsonArthur Yes it works
@3:55.. are some of the best portraits you guys will see from this lens hehe.
Can you use this lens on panasonic lumix gh5?
Yes you can :)
The photographs shown in this video where they taken using raw. And also how do you turn your raw photographs into jpegs once you have edited them
I’m a Nikon FF and crop sensor Fuji camera owner, but I love this btw. I have a great range of lenses some over £3k, but I love some of my plastic mount lenses
I wonder why doesn't Sigma lenses get attention they deserve? With their fast
f/1.4 16mm, 30mm and upcomig 56mm, they are very competitive considering cost is around same as olympus premium lenses. I would like to see you review those! :)
Thanks Tommi, we will see what we can do in the near future. We will hope to expand our reviews, stay tuned.
That are APS-C lenses, which don't capitalize on the mayor benefit of mft, which is size.
Thanks
May I ask what you are shooting this video on?
We shot everything on EM-1 II unless specifically stated.
I have been using this lens since day one and never knew there is a removable ring in the front LOL
LOL haha now you know :) Thanks for watching mate.
I like the way he pronounces 'shoot'.
Olympus e500 please
Hey Jimmy, if you had to choose between the 45mm vs the 75mm for portrait work, which one would you choose? Which one do you think gives the most pleasing results in terms of facial distortion and stuff? I have a 20mm for everyday stuff, but I’d like to get a dedicated portrait lens too. I tend to like the more compressed backgrounds, like a Tony Scott movie, but I just don’t know. What are your thoughts?
Hello 👋
You had no reply as nobody but you can reply to what are your tastes really
Myself on full-frame, I absolutely love my Canon EF 135mm F/2
So will get an Olympus 75mm F/1.8 to replicate that
But I already have the 45mm F/1.8 ..
Best budget lens?
Olympus OM 50mm. Dirt cheap on eBay and still amazing.
how convinient. i have recently bought the pen-f and love it. my only lens that i got is the pana 20mm f1.7II and the cheap oly -150 zoom. this lens is currently sitting in my shopping basket on amazon. thanks for the review :)
I think its amazing that so many FF users slag of MFT, Personally I think that its the photographer that makes the picture not the gear they use although it does help to have good glass, I use MFT because the quality apart from very low light is every bit as good as anything on the market and for me the lack of weight and bulk means I always have my camera with me which never happen when I was using FF
some youtuber or reviewers like make some noise in order to get more views
@@Red35Photography wow that's way too much. The pany here is only 10% expensive than the oly, lol.
@@Red35Photography and pany has lens hood inside.
Good luck with the focus hunting on that panasonic lens....
@@darrendavenport3334 thanks for sharing the experience!
Lightweight ,small , budget lens how do you rate for travel out of 10
10 :) This is an awesome lens! I can fit three premium lenses with a PEN-F or even EM-1 Mark II in a tiny camera bag and just walk all day!
I have ordered that lens. Quite cheap, only U$200, with shiping and taxes.
I never used this lens, but all I've heard is very positive. The only problem is that after shooting with the new 1.2 primes the only other interesting premium lens for me is the 75mm f/1.8.
Yes, I have the 1.2 primes too but sometimes, I want to travel light and the weather isn't too hostile, I will take these little guys out.
@@Red35Photography yep, totally agree. For travel and street I usually use mine 17mm f/1.8.
