He landed on his feet an sprang forward. Usually long jumpers kick out so far that they land on their butts when they hit the pit. I'm sure this aided his mark. That said, it's nice when you do everything wrong the night before and then shatter the world record... Everyone can go kick rocks.

Great video except the end. Altitude does help. Beamon had a great jump despite the wind and altitude advantage - the other guys did not. Sometimes everything comes together to get that one off jump even if you are not as consistent as others.
