I teach you a technique to manually set your Warm Audio WA-1B Compressor. I have been setting my compressors manually using this technique for over 40 years of recording. Setting a compressor manually is not difficult as long as you keep a few concepts in mind. With this technique you can set any compressor manually. I like seeing this concept explained this way. I would really like to see it done with music though. This will explain drums well, but a vocal typically does not sing straight 1-2-3-4 as the metronome is doing. 👊🏾
Delmixedit my brother thanks for your comment. This video is primarily aimed that those who struggle to set any compressor. I come from the school of thought that “If you aim at nothing you will hit nothing every time”. That said, my goal was to prove that compression goals are attainable with any compressor using something a lot less dynamic and simple like a metronome because everyone doesn’t have access to musicians to practice technique. My preference through the years is to not have to apply much compression to drums and vocals and ask the musician to adjust their touch on their instrument for the recording. This where a lot of players who are unfamiliar with making dynamic adjustments for the studio struggle. You are correct a vocal is not as typical as this metronome but dynamics are dynamics, soft is soft and loud is loud whether it’s coming from a Cellist or a power chord thrashing rocker. The approach to compression remains the same for me. It always begins with the basic question. How much gain reduction do I want on this source and can I get the player or singer to adjust their technique so I don’t lose the character of their instrument through compression. In my lifetime I’ve experienced all types of players but a good musician is one that is flexible and able to make technical adjustments on the fly in order to support the music. Sorry for a newbie question, but how do you determine the specific gain reduction goal before starting? Is it related to the difference in transient levels between the louder and softer parts of the vocal or instrument? Sorry again, but I'm new to all of this and am trying to learn. Thank you so much for your helpful videos.
Thanks for watching and your question. Everyone's goal as to how to control the dynamics differ. But, certain compressors will impart more character the harder they work. Always start with my suggested baseline setting and work from there. If you find the result satisfactory, then you've accomplished what you set out to do. If not, or if you find the recorded signal sounds "squeezed" then adjustments have to be made. Some folks have poor technique. Whether it's a vocalist or guitarist try to get them to make a slight changes to the way they are recording their part either by backing away from the mic when loud or strumming a bit softer during certain passages. The end game is always to get the instrument or voice to sit in the mix. Anything else is extra. Hope that helps and feel free to ask any question you have.✌🏾

John! My brother! I think this is a hit! Very close replication of the Tube Tech. Extremely sensitive to small changes in the settings. Quite happy with it. More to come. Thanks for watching my friend✌🏽🙏🏽
I own 3 CL-1B compressors, two in my primary room and one in my home studio. What I can tell you is that they're all 3 different in how they react to certain frequencies so I don't ever pair them up on a stereo bus (at least not a critical stereo bus.) None of my 3 are so different that they sound like different types of compressors, rather one allows more highs through while while letting the bass breathe, and another clamps on the bass a little more. Another one is more mid forward. They're not so far apart that a little EQ before or after can't get them to sound pretty much identical on mono sources. I was sent a WA-1B and I compared it to all of my originals. It's within the character tolerance of all 3 that I own, in fact the Warm is right in the middle of all three. The Warm is probably a good representative of what the average CL-1B sounds like.
