The song is about the relationship between psychologist and philosopher Wilhelm Reich and his young son, Peter. It describes the boy's memories of his life with Reich on their family farm, called Orgonon where the two spent time "cloudbusting". The lyric further describes Wilhelm Reich's abrupt arrest and imprisonment, the pain of loss the young Peter felt, and his helplessness at being unable to protect his father. The song was inspired by Peter Reich's 1973 memoir, "A Book of Dreams".
This is the cool thing about having grown up without the internet. You can be an American kid exposed to a British artist through a Dutch girlfriend in 1994 and wonder "I wonder what a Kate Bush video might be like," and then forget about it for 20 years. Then, suddenly something sparks that in your memory and you're like, "I'll bet I can just look that up on RUclips". Wonderfully weird video for an apex song from an amazing album. Yay, Kate!
Couldn't agree more. I neglected my admiration for Ms Bush for 30 years, and now I have access to her recordings of all kindsl. This is a great video, and track, isn't it? There is a huge amount of rare Kate Bush material on RUclips. I have tickets for the first night of her 2014 London shows. Yeah, I know, you hate me now.
Flo Jo Yes, we do hate you :-)) I used to have all her records on vinyl, now in iTunes they are lacking something... What's amazing is that not only the music, lyrics and voice are amazing, but the video is also always entertaining. I think she was 20 years ahead of the rest....
Music66 People, keep your vinyl. Cassettes, CDs, WAVs, these are as but passing clouds. We can't all go see her live (THIS IS THE WEEKEND, THIS IS THE WEEK!), but vinyl gets close.
Flo Jo I dispute that vinyl comes closer than CD's or WAVS/FLACS: vinyl does sound more pleasing to the ear but that's because of the frequency response (warmth), not because it's a more accurate "like in the studio" sound.
Made me cry... my father passed away in Feb 2020... Watching this video had reminded me of him, and how I feel I should carry on his legacy. Thank you, Kat Bush 🙏
Even my dad passed away November 2020 for an accident over his motorbike. So i know how you feel. I miss him so much. He showed these beautiful songs when i was 12-13 and i was amazed by them. I want to thank him for all he did for me
I had a huge poster of Kate in my office in 1979. She was 21 and I was 23. My then girlfriend didn't mind. She had a poster of Robert Redford (who was a lot older than her). My girlfriend is now my wife - 38 years and hangin in there.
This is my favorite Kate Bush music video. It's wonderful. Kate and Donald are superb here. I have to say, I get a little choked up watching this. Particularly the ending when she gets the machine to work and it starts raining and her Papa, seeing what she's done, is full of joy, and playfully knocks the hat off the government man sitting next to him. Powerful stuff. So many of the 80s music videos were, like this one, fun, imaginative and creative works, displaying a childish wonder at the new medium, in the same way Kate's character here shows for her father and his mysterious and powerful machine. It was a great time when music met television. It was a magical time.
I still get choked up watching this. This is a timeless video and a great example of the talent of Kate Bush. She and Donald Sutherland are magnificent in this video and it should have won many awards. I second a comment from someone else here that said this would have made a great feature length movie. Perhaps that is still possible...
I'd almost forgotten that Donald Sutherland was in this video for Kate Bush's "Cloudbusting". ❤ What an amazing and varied acting career Sutherland had. 😊 R.I.P. Donald.
I remember hearing this in 1986 and thinking wow! It was and still is very unique sounding. The video is fantastic. Donald Sutherland is brilliant in it. Love his expressions at 3:17 - 3:54 especially. To think he took time off another filming project at the time to work on this.
I burst into tears every time I hear or see it. fantastic song....the drumming and violins are inspired. sutherland is perfect .always loved his style. Thanks Kate.
I can never listen to this without crying, those opening notes start and I'm done for. The same thing happens with "This Woman's Work" too. Such a powerful, wonderful woman. "I just know that something good is gonna happen..."
I have to listen to this song once a year - just before christmas. Because I heard it for the first time in December 1985. Music brings back memories. Great clip by the way - the old days of MTV.
I used to listen to this song on repeat for hours with my father and every time I hear it now, all I can see is the great times we had together. Brings tears to my eyes every time. Thank you, Kate Bush, for your beautiful music and amazing lyrics.
WHEN ARTISTS WENT IN ONE DIRECTION KATE WENT IN A DIFFERENT ONE AND EVEN AFTER 30 ODD YRS SHE STILL LEAVES A MAJOR IMPRESSION NO ONELIKE HER AT THAT TIME.
I originally read that as "even after 30000 years" To be fair, if humanity survives that long, her music will probably still be making a major impression on people.
I have loved Kate since I was 12 years old, didn't get to see her recently but she is the most creative, inspirational life, soul that has been gifted to us all. Thanks Kate for your light x

Liebe Kate ,Danke für die Zeit mit dir ,du und deine Musik ist Wunderschön......schade das die Zeit so schnell vergeht ,bin aber glücklich das ich deine Musik erlebt habe......Danke
This song reminds me of a wet week's holiday at Greendale Apartments Wastwater in the Lake District. Around 1984 maybe. With Joanna Jayne and Steve. Every day we ended up in Steve's car sheltering from the rain, despite being hardy walkers. Roads and paths flooded. He played this song on the system in his BMW. I can see is all now and I can still feel the rain and the gentle aroma from the steamy windows. A fantastic video and a great great song from Kate.
Yes, love Hounds of Love. Listened to it constantly. Great to see Kate Bush back performing live after 35 years. Why didn't she do it sooner? Her music is very complex, and probably difficult to do live, but she's pulled it off.
Kate Bush is magic. I have loved her since I was so young. I go back to her when I feel like I am being "too emotional" for a kick to the head because, no. Emotional ones are a gift.
viele mochten damals die singende Hausfrau nicht, aber sie hat echt Musikgeschichte geschrieben. Alleine mit diesem Video wo Mr. Superschauspieler Donald Sutherland mitspielt. Respekt ... danke für den Upload :)

I love the fact that Kate finds a story and composes a song around it and brings together an epic orchestra.... Genius.
