  • The perfect ending to National Train Day 2013 at Portland Union Station with a ride the cupola of the restored caboose Union Pacific 21598 behind steam locomotive SP&S 700 across the Steel Bridge into southeast Portland to the Oregon Pacific Railroad yard and the Oregon Rail Heritage Center.

Very good remembrance of the old days, thanks. I was a child in the 50s, lived half block of "Estacion Union" (Station) in Monterrey, Mexico. I had little time to have conscious of steam locomotives, but I even have memories of their monstrous sound (for a little boy) and the smell of burned oil.

Nice video. I took the Cascades to Portland to hang around for a while that day, but had to leave before the consist went back across the river.
