- The Southern Pacific Daylight streamlined steam locomotive returns to Portland, Oregon after visiting Los Angeles and the opening of the California State Railway Museum at Railfair 1981 in Sacramento, California.

This incredible 4-8-4 Northern locomotive also pulls the annual Holiday Express train along this same route every holiday season. It is a terrific trip for the whole family. You and the family can join Santa Claus and his elves for a magical ride behind Portland’s famous steam locomotives. Vintage rail cars transport you along the Willamette River in the heart of the city of Portland.
Built in 1941 as a 4-8-4 GS-4 locomotive, SP 4449 is the only remaining operable “streamlined” steam locomotive of the Art Deco era. This grand Lady of the High Iron pulled Southern Pacific “Daylight” coaches from Los Angeles to San Francisco over the scenic Coast Route and then on to Portland until 1955.
Retired to Oaks Park in 1958 for display only, many thought 4449 would never run again. In 1974 she was completely restored specifically to pull the 1976 Bicentennial American Freedom Train throughout the United States to the delight of over 30 million people. SP 4449 has also operated numerous excursions since. She is arguably one of the most beautiful locomotives ever built and kept that way by the all-volunteer Friends of SP 4449. Авто/Мото
She had the best voice during these years with the Screamin 6 chimer. She had emotion during these years, the handcock just doesnt do justice 😔
For those that wanna hear that fabulous SP 6 chime, there’s a very good whistle sequence between 50:20 and 52:15 during the photo stop.
Bloody great whistle
get some solid SP 6 chime at 25:00
@@bdub215 ah yeah I must’ve missed that one

@@bdub215 No, 25:20 is the best. It gets even better at 25:52.

@@SuperFoxyRailwayProduction6702 I'm upset it got stolen 😪
If only that whistle would be recovered…
Edit 6/4/23: The whistle has been recovered and used on ATSF 2926 when her original whistle was being repaired back in 2021.

Great video of one of my 3 favorite steam locomotives. I have the Kato N scale GS4 4-8-4 number 4449 in the Southern Pacific Daylight colors & the matching 10 car Morning Daylight set which is my N scale Pacific West Coast model railroad excursion train.

That SP 6-chime never sounded better than on 4449! Maybe the extra boiler pressure makes it hit the higher notes?
that's correct. Most people are normally accustomed to hearing the SP-6 chime being blown on 190-220 PSI, as that is what most modern day excursion locomotives operate at. The cab forwards ran at 250 PSI and the GS-4s ran at 300 PSI, so both of those locomotives would have blown their 6-chimes at a higher pitch.
@@FanRailer 50 PSI will not make much of a difference in sound. It sounded the way it did because of how it was tuned.
... first off, the difference is more like 100 PSI, and secondly, it makes quite a noticeable difference in pitch, or do you not understand how basic acoustics work?
@@FanRailer Yeah, it makes a noticeably different sound because it’s TUNED that way. There is not much difference between a whistle on 250 PSI and 300 PSI. It’ll sound a LITTLE different but it’s not much. Don’t try and act like a know-it-all for whistles. Dick
The fact that you’re even saying “tuned” goes a long way in showing you don’t understand the the basic working concept of a steam whistle, or how acoustic resonance is affected by temperature, which is notably higher at 300 psi vs 200 psi.

Why the 4449 have a white side line on the wheels
I’m guessing that you mean the white wall on the wheels, it is there for decorative purposes
Kind of wish she still had them. They made her look extra pretty.
@@gabrielarambula4465 agreed
It also had the white lining on it's wheels when it hauld the Freedom Train, painted in black in 2000-2001, the Freedom Trains return 2002 and back to daylight in 2004
White walls on drivers is basically makeup
3:01 i saw an amtrak train
So have I. My, how time flies.
First I thought that Amtrak and 4449 are going to crash 2 I noticed is not crash
There is actually a sidetrack which allows one train to pass another. The Daylight train had to wait on a siding to let the Amtrak train pass before the 4449 can proceed.
0:49 i spotted an amtrak car
Was that you on the cam?
@@atlantis0v-104 No, he said that he saw an Amtrak car in the consist. He didn’t say he was on board on it. I don’t think any of us were born back in 81.

Do you have to do that for every single 4449 video you watch? Is this the only thing you ever say? You don’t even appreciate how much effort was put in this video, from 1981! They didn’t have smartphones, nor did they have Bluetooth or anything like that back in the 80s!
