- Haththikuchchi Temple, located in Giribawa near Rajangana in the Anuradhapura District, is an ancient and significant historical site in Sri Lanka. This temple complex, nestled amidst lush greenery and rocky outcrops, is steeped in history, legend, and religious significance. Its name, "Haththikuchchi," translates to "Elephant's Stomach," which is derived from the shape of a prominent rock formation within the temple premises that resembles the stomach of an elephant.
The origins of Haththikuchchi Temple date back to the early Anuradhapura period, making it one of the oldest and most revered religious sites in Sri Lanka. It is believed to have been established during the reign of King Devanampiya Tissa in the 3rd century BCE, a period marked by the introduction of Buddhism to the island by Mahinda Thera, the son of Emperor Ashoka of India. This temple, like many others in Sri Lanka, was a center of Buddhist worship and monastic life.
One of the most significant historical events associated with Haththikuchchi Temple is its connection to King Sirisangabo, who ruled Anuradhapura in the 3rd century CE. According to legend, King Sirisangabo, known for his piety and benevolence, abdicated his throne voluntarily to avoid bloodshed and conflict. He retreated to Haththikuchchi, where he lived as an ascetic. His reign is remembered for its emphasis on Buddhist principles and non-violence. The king’s selfless act of renunciation and his subsequent life at the temple are pivotal stories in Sri Lankan history, highlighting the deep intertwining of the island’s royalty and Buddhism.
The architectural layout of Haththikuchchi Temple is a testament to the advanced engineering and artistic skills of ancient Sri Lankan builders. The most striking feature is the large rock that resembles an elephant's stomach, which houses a cave where monks meditated.
