If the pundits knew half as much about football as they thought they did, they’d be working for the teams they cover. Not the other way around. A lot of hubris in the journalist circles.

Richard Sherman is on the same the same line of thought on why the Falcons picked up Penix. The thought is, the Vikings won't have top draft picks because they will have seasons good enough to keep them from top draft picks. We'll see.

Realistically the grades are meaningless until probably after year 3. It's just a guessing game on who they think will hit.

I agree about Draft Grades being STUPID. First off, who are these guys doing the grading?? I'm not saying the guys from The Bleacher Report or from FF or people like Mel Kiper are ignorant but the NFL guys in the team Draft rooms are (usually) much better informed than the draft 'experts' you see on TV My point is the NFL guys make LOTS of mistakes in the Draft AND they are better informed than the TV experts.
"And we're going to give the Patriots a B- for their draft, generally it was ok, but drafting a QB in the 6th is a reach, hopefully he'll be able to contribute as a backup in the future. I mean, what kind of a name for a QB is Brady? Is he part of the Brady Bunch?" Draft grades are freaking dumb.

Atlanta knows Kirk takes them from 7-10 to 10-7 and first round exit, not a SB. Penix makes sense from that perspective. Mackie is right: it took the Falcons 6 weeks to figure out what took the Vikings 6 years.
I am glad Cousins is GONE.

The falcons operated like a team worried about their draft capital in the future. Could the tampering case, and the ramifications from that have influenced the Falcons decision to pull the trigger on Penix?

For my money, Penix is could have started this year and been better than anything the Falcons fielded last year, and they could have taken the money they gave Kirk and put it in the defense. But I think the tampering stuff definitely played into how they operate, post Kirk signing

Maybe the falcons did it because their first round pick next year will be taken away. Better early than never
How does the rest of the team feel when a QB takes up 15 to 20% of the teams cap. Is it get what you can or save some for the rest of the Team?

The mantae story is so wrong, so cringe and fucking scary on so many levels. My classic old lineman name: Blase Winter for the packers. Funniest interview with a linemen (DLine, Sorry), John Jurkovic. Played for the packers and I think the Bears? He had his own radio show in Chicago after his career was over. Very funny dude! Great show. Can't wait for part 2!

My take on the Falcons situation is this. Owner wanted Kirk. The GM and HC did not, but they work for the owner so the GM signs Kirk, and then the GM and HC said we'll do what WE want to do and draft the QB that they ❤. The GM's comment may be correct about the Falcons not having this high a pick again anytime soon but make no mistake this was an example of owner and front office not in alignment, both getting what they wanted, and living with the scrutiny.
Atlanta could trade for an early 1st round pick -- 12 or 24 months from now -- to get a QB who removes Kirk's agent's leverage, or sign a decent FA.
It's likely that someone loves Penix, probably rating him a Top Three QB prospect.
Atlanta's move getting Penix makes sense if Cousins full contract isn't guaranteed. Now Atlanta can kick The Kirkster out the door after two years. Now drafting Penix makes sense. In 2 years, Atlanta will know IF Penix can be a Starter--or not.
Penix and Cousins age throws a wrench in that theory.

I think the Michael Penix pic was completely organic and in the moment. I think the falcons received a few calls for a trade up to eight and they knew that teams were going to take Penix. They got greedy and said hey why would we give up a potential franchise quarterback to these other teams when we were sitting here and we could just take him. It was FOMO plain and simple.

The one thing about drafting BPA is that you don't rationalize stretching to pick someone because you really need that position filled.
I've in long been a BPA guy. It was what the Vikings used to do when they were one of the 3 or 4 dominant teams of the late 60's and 70's when Bud Grant was coach and Mike Lynn GM.
Although Lynn totally effecthem over when he left for the Saints.
IMO cousins was signing for Arthur Blank drive towards a playoff run now. (Age of owner)

Watched Pat McAfee show coverage of the first round. Bill Belichick was surprisingly good. First time watching the draft in years it was pretty entertaining. But there was no way I could watch more than that, or god forbid, espn and Mel Kiper. Is there a more annoying media personality than Kiper? I feel bad for anyone who watches
more than the first round. Drafts, all-star games, or hall of fame ceremonies are basically unwatchable and very overrated as a tv shows.

Love the show, but I don't get the JJ hate. If you look past the lack of volume, the dude had elite stats for 3rd and long situations, overall QBR, overall completion percentages, etc. Meanwhile, Penix didn't put any fear into me in the national title game. He looked overwhelmed and slow as a processor. The defense around the Pac 12 made a lot of those QBs better than they are.
Back to their shanties. LOL
What I hate is that the day after the draft you have a bunch of talking heads, including those with real knowledge, already trying to predict not only how a rookie will do but they are already trying to project what QBs will be picked in next year's draft.
Unless they provide us with a record of how they are usually correct why should we care. Plenty of commentators who said to suck for Sam Darnold or that Trey Lance was the real deal were wrong but they continue to act like they are always right.

How pissed do you guys think the Falcons are at Kirk for not only spilling the beans about the tampering, but doing it in his introductory press conference. Pissed enough to draft his replacement NOW?

I think Raheem Morris just wants to have a long tenure, like Mike Tomlin. Easiest way to have a short tenure is to have a bad QB. So you weigh the possibility of not being in a position to get a QB in 2,3 years against the benefit of a pass rushing phenom like Latu. They invested in movable pieces on the defensive front on days 2 and 3, and they will hope to manufacture pressures schematically instead. Morris was brilliant at this for the Rams (99 helped of course). The reality is that moving from the 20's up to get a prospect like Penix in 2025-6 will likely cost multiple first round picks and they still might suck. You can hope that a free agent is available and willing to bail you out, but its not guaranteed and its expensive.
The usual logic is that only 1 QB can play on the field at a time. But QB is about 4x as important for winning as the next most important position according to shtatishticsh. Maybe investing heavily in QB succession isn't actually so crazy?
I get the lost opportunity cost of a rookie contract, but if you are in a position to sign a good QB to their first long term deal, that a good place to be.
I get the QB room thing, but competition makes every other position group better. Maybe it can also make QB's better?
So why did they sign Kirk Cousins? Because they want to win now, and there was no guarantee 6 weeks ago that PENIX would be available, and there is no guarantee that he is ready to play this fall. It is a lot to pay, but there were not very many roads that allowed to falcons to contend both now and later.
I had the clear eyeglass frames like Jeremiah is wearing. I like the look but I hated them. Every time I took them off I'd lose them. I don't need my glasses to read and I read all day. So I spent countless minutes of my day looking for my 🤓

I don't think we would have needed to trade to 10 if Atalanta didn't mess the board up. Raiders would have jumped up if we didn't.
there should be two drafts grades...first draft grade is which drafts made the team...the ssecond draft grade is the end of season grade...all this post draft grades is nothing but assumptions and guessing...as if first round draft picks dont go bust..and later rounds picks make the team.
NFL Network is the only draft I can stomach. Greg Olsen deserved a better fate, I thought he was great. Draft grades are a joke and 2 years premature.

Not to beat a dead horse, but it is also possible that Atlanta suspects that they may have no first round pick next year. That pick might be cancelled because of the tampering.
Draft grades are dumb. As far as the Falcons. Maybe they got a heads up on their FA tampering and will loose their first round next year.

Contractual leverage only matters when i comes to resigning them or forcing them to take a pay cut. Doubt He'll be getting another contract like this again.
Always wondered what happened to Josh Rosen. Were the Cards really that bad, or did Rosen have flaws that nobody noticed?

I actually really do like the Penix pick for Atlanta. Feel bad for the situation he’s in though. I hope Kirk and his agent doesn’t bully him or the Coach/GM. My hope is he balls out enough at camp to take the job from Kirk. Overall Penix has a much stronger arm and much better athleticism.
Also, heard Kirk won’t be healthy for camp.
