@@Fignuts35 GM/Coach wanted to draft a qb and Owner wanted Kirk. A report is out today that apparently only the Broncos were in on McCarthy in a trade up to the top 10.
Likewise, the Saints, Rams, Seahawks, and Cowboys were looking to trade in the top 10 for Penix. Maybe the Falcons saw all those teams interest and knew. And decided to stick and pick for him.
This may come to a shock to some people but Penix was rated ahead of McCarthy on a lot of boards to the teams that were in the teens and 20s.
He literally got the same treatment the Vikings were openly telling him he was going to get.

They lose a 3rd at absolute most my guess is a 4th or 5th. Tampering with a coach AND QB both under contract is a 1st. Tampering with a coach Super Bowl week is a 3rd. Tampering with a feee agent QB a few days early is less than that.

1. How epic would a Vikings-Chargers superbowl be in the next couple of years?
2. If both the Vikings picks pan out, could this be one of the best Vikings teams in history, but at the same time the best the NFC North has maybe ever been 1-4. What if they finally have their franchise guy, but miss out on a superbowl run because the Packer, Lions, and Bears are fielding great teams.

I think the Falcons are only planning on having Cousins for two years despite the 4 year contract. With the tanpering punishment coming I think they and are worried they wont be able to draft a qb next year so they panicked.
I can't understand Atlanta taking Michael Penix. They sign The Kirkster to a BIG FA contract so the Falcons should have QB as a low Draft priority, especially in a loaded Draft. The Falcons draft Penix and I'm thinking, "Wtf??" The only explanation I can come up with is The Kirksters injury is likely gonna be an issue in the future. Near future that is. There is NO other way drafting Michael Penix makes sense. Most likely explanation for drafting Michael Penix is that Arthur Blank is an IDIOT. Well Blank signs the checks so he can do as he wants.
Falcons have been 1 game out of the playoffs 2 years in a row with the worst QB situation in the league. Kirks deal is basically 2 years Penix gets to sit and learn and if he pans out they get a decade of QB play.

i think i finally understand why the falcons got a qb.. they didnt want to be stuck in kirk cousins purgatory..they saw what happened to the vikings.. picking towards the 2nd half of the draft.. in the 20's of mediocrity.. this was their chance before kirk puts the team on cruise control to the play offs every year to lose .

People comparing Penix to the Jordan Love situation are clueless. Love went 26th, not top 10. Packers were coming off a 13-win season and Love was a luxury pick with an aging AR. Penix went 8th to a bum roster that just signed a huge QB deal a month ago 😅

It's a terrible pick. No question or debate. However, Gurt Cuzzins has only a 10M guarantee for year Three, then nothing in year 4. So, basically Atlanta is saying "Gurt is our guy, but Penix will be our guy two years from now". But, I agree with Boone, it's f***ing stupid.

I think the hope is Penix will be QB 1 (sooner than later) sometime this season: Think about it... what is the most important position in sports? Backup QB! Cousins has never won anything, 1 playoff game win. Cousins is a GREAT backup (100 MIL guaranteed) , worth it, especially when you have someone you HOPE can be a CJ type player under a rookie contact. I am a Saints fan, but well done ATL..

2nd dumb football question I'd like to see you guys discuss: If you took the most recent CFB champion team (2023 Michigan) to play every SB champion in order, when do the SB teams start winning? Example given for clarification, 2023 Wolverines vs 1966 Packers, then the 1967 Packers, then the 1968 Jets, then the Chiefs, etc all the way up to current year. Where's the first time where the pros can win for the first time, and when is the inflection point when the pros never lose again? The premise of the question basically revolves around the size and athleticism of the players, since obviously 60 odd years ago the professional players didn't have access to the strength training and supplements of modern college kids, and schemes too. For example, the average size of the '66 packers O-line was ~245 pounds while the Michigan O-line this year was close to 340 average weight.
Slightly better question than the typical Best CFB team vs worst NFL team from whatever given year and I'd love to hear former players' takes on this.

For McCarthy, Turner and a 7th round pick, they gave up the 11th, a 2nd, TWO 4th, TWO 5ths, and a 2nd, 3rd and 4th next year.

Penix just made Cousins another 150 million dollars. He will start next year and Cousins is cut looking for his next 100 million dollar contract after giving the Falcons 9 or 10 wins.
Terry Fontenot is a horrible gm. In the first round he drafted Kyle Pitts(who i loved as a player but drafting TE when u have lots of other needs that high) over Jamar Chase, micah parsons, sewell, surtain, rashon slater(less on the o line cuz atl has a good line) but he picked drake london and he drafted Bijan when he had a rookie 1000 yard rusher already. They have some good players and are a competitive team but they have missed on all these high picks. I think it was really stupid of them to take Penix when they cud have drafted Murphy, Quinion Mitchell, Latu, Dallas Turner, or Darius Robinson and cud have traded back to get some of those guys. People try to compare this pick to Jordan Love but love is 1 year older than Penix right now and Aaron Rodgers and Jordan Love were players who fell to a team that already had a good record and it wasnt a top ten pick that they earned by sucking. Also I wonder if this pick had a racial component, the Micheal Vick experience was the most exciting time in Falcons history and the fact that he was black was a big part of that because of the culture of the city and it is possible that they wanted to draft Penix(who was worthy of the pick but not for a team that just signed someone to start because they needed to draft someone to help Kirk win not someone for after Kirk is not the starter) because someone who had a lot of say in the decision to make the pick wanted to try and recreate the feeling of the Vick situation cuz im sure there a lots of people there who miss that time and tbh I understand that if that hadnt just signed Kirk Cousins and spent that money on other players. Tbh It wud really be nice if Penix duz become a star there because I do think it wud be nice for ATL to have another black qb to be excited about but that duznt change how stupid that pick was and how bad Terry has been at drafting.

How soon can Penix holdout or demand a trade? Does he have any options? Or should he just try to beat out Kirk for the starting job?
As much as Kirk is mid he only has a two year guarantee. So Penix will sit for two years, and learn from a pro bowl quarterback. Then have a shot after learning for two years. Also the draft isn’t over, and these same people said the Lions had an awful draft and they owned the division last season.
