    Your hiking partner will do in a pinch. Knew friends had a purpose!

    I think I'm gonna back away irrespective of my thumb's coverage :D

    I'm gonna be honest, if I see a black bear while backpacking, my initial reaction will not be giving the bear a thumbs up and a long wink.

    Didn't know Frank Zappa was still hiking the Adirondacks. Hope Dweezil and Moon Unit got away safely !

    Those pink bears are the most dangerous.

    This is more about how to avoid a bear encounter than what to do.
    What about bear spray? When to use? How to back up safely? What if there a few hikers? Better to form a group to look bigger to the bear or separate to increase chances for each individual?

      Grouping up is definitely ideal. While bear spray is recommended in grizzly bear habitat, it's not really necessary for black bears in the Northeast. That said, it doesn't hurt to bring it so long as you know how to use it and have practiced in advance. Our experience is that many folks end up getting themselves with bear spray more often than not.

      And if you use it spray em if they are to close. I had a woman once start spraying as soon as she saw the bear and blinded everyone but the bear

    That pink bear looks like a lot more fun than the one I just ran into.

    You ever see a 2-year-old cub bear [ in their 2nd year ] out hunting for baby fawn deer or see thing that look like cow scat

    I was in a forest area this morning and I did encounter a black bear, my very first time encountering a bear it was meters away from me on the path I was walking on and I just stayed away and waited for it to cross and then I left

    So talking or just purposely making noise while hiking will also scare away any other wildlife in the area. Right?

    Why aren't there bear-proof food lockers at popular wilderness campgrounds?

      The short answer is that they are expensive and require staffing to maintain. The land manager in the Adirondacks is currently devoting resources elsewhere.

    But are you supposed to play dead if the bear becomes confrontational?

    • @dameshamroc
      @dameshamroc 16 дней назад

      Maybe only after getting mauled and it thinks you’re dead… if It’s a black bear… if It’s a grizzly or polar yes play dead or try to die .

    The bear needs to decide what its going to do. I do not go into bear country without my ruger super Blackhawk hunter 44mag. I have already taken a grizzly in Alaska. Dont worry all legal. I had tag and season was in. And talk to my friend Leo. He was mauled by a grizzly on a fishing trip. Buddy saved him by killing bear. Bear spray doest work.

    • @ADKmtnclub
      @ADKmtnclub  Год назад +1

      Biologists equip black bears with collars to collect data on survival, reproduction, habitat, behavior, and movement. And that footage would be from a trail cam. Thanks for watching!
