These "vintage" lenses are a lot simpler to disassemble and clean yourself to remove the fungus and haze, than the (much) later AF lens types. There are many videos showing how to do so--for the exact model of your lenses. I just finished cleaning my Nikkor 50mm f1.2 AiS lens (technically it became an AiP), which also has the dandelion cpu chip with electrical contacts, so that it will communicate with the Nikons that have electronics built in--anything from the late 80's on. It is now fungus/haze free and quite sharp, even wide open.
Yep, I have all the lenses you mention, I shoot on a GH5. My favorite is really the 28 mm AIS. It's sharp right away at 2.8. It's like a 56 with a dumb adaptor or a 42mm with a speedbooster, and frankly I would have to pay so much more to have the same quality.
CLA these old vintage lenses, its pretty simple and straight forward. The internal dust, fungus and off gassing from lubricants seriously impact subject isolation/3D pop and diminish sharpness just as much, esp wide open. I use Series E lenses as well, very unique look to them that cant be duplicated. Incredible footage btw!
@@SpencerWhiteman No I don't have the rokkors but definitely going to be picking some up but since I use m4/3, it is hard to find a 35 or 50 in full frame.
Spencer Whiteman, I am into Filmmaking and have some budget limitations choosing professional cine glass, so thought of going to vintage primes. Currently in a dilemma which one to pick (Contax Zeiss or Nikon AIS)
They are both amazing! When i bought mine some years ago, the Nikons were much cheaper than the Contax. Is this still true? If the Nikons are cheaper, I'd definitely go that route!
Nice video! Can anyone help? I have the Nikon 24mm 2.8 ais.. I was looking to attach the Viltrox speed booster .71x to blackmagic pocket 4k. The speed booster doesn’t attach to the lens.
Hey Spencer, I'm thinking of getting the 28mm F2.8 AIS lens for my BMPCC 6K G2, any others you would recommend to get along with it? I was going to do the 24mm, but a few people said it's really not sharp wide open and you have to stop it down a lot.
I really liked your video. I also want to buy nikon 1.5 ais for my bmpcc. Is there a difference in quality between ais and ai? want a set of nikon lenses
Hey Man! Thank you so much, I shot that on a BMPCC4K and the Sigma 18-35 / Viltrox Speedbooster combo. The soft texture was probably from the Viltrox, usually if I keep my aperture almost all the way opened up, the Viltrox just slightly softens the image, which sometimes works to my advantage haha. I believe I was shooting at 1.4.
Hi, nice video! Is there a difference in adapting the E lenses compared to the other Nikon lenses? All the adapters I find don't include E lenses. Thank you from Germany!
Great question, but actually no! You're right about there not being much clarity on E lenses and adapting them. You can use the Nikon F mount to Canon EF adapter on E series lenses. E is the series of lens, as well as my Nikon AI & AIS lenses. However, they all utilize the Nikon F mount. Hopefully that clears it up for you!
Hello. I bought myself from the ai series. I have 24mm and 50mm. And now I want another one that's 85mm or 135mm. Which one of these do you recommend to buy?
What did you use to grind down the protruding element on the 24mm? This is an issue with my 20mm using a speedbooster and would be nice to be able to use it with it.
Dude, I really REALLY love the look of the footage in this video. I have been hunting for a new lens for ages and been tearing my hear out trying to decide which. After stumbling upon this video i think im gonna get all 3. I have a canon camera, what lens adapter would i need to mount to a EF body. (i am a bit of a noob when it comes to this sort of thing so any feedback is widely welcome) :D thanks dude.
Heck yeah man that is awesome, thank you for the love! You need to buy a Nikon F - Canon EOS or Canon EF mount adapter, it doesn't matter which one, they're the same. Get one of the very slim adapters!
@BRAKEPK similar man, I have a Canon C100 and I am also getting into using Nikon Nikkor lenses ..they are among the easiest of all vintage lenses to adapt to Canon EF cameras and they are in a pretty wide range of focal lengths...I will try to post some footage of my own of the C100 w/ a Nikkor AI 35mm f2.8
I sure am! I'm using the Viltrox, if you're shooting on the GH5 you have to tape the contacts on the Viltrox or it won't detect the lens and it will cause an error.
Thanks for the video mate! What do you think about a combo of some Nikon AIS lenses paired with Metabones 0.64x XL Speedboster (Nikon to M43) attached to the BMPCC4k?
Oh yeah that would be a beauty combo my friend! You're getting pretty close to a full frame equivalent, that in combo with the Nikons would look super good! Thanks for the love brotha!
Great footage. Based on few videos i watched, i understood that if we have a Nikon AI or AIS lens mounted via a speedbooster (like Viltrox NF-M43X) to the Panasonic GH5, we will be able to read the aperture change in the viewfinder. Can you confirm this? Thanks for your help!!!
Hey there! You actually won't be able to since the Nikon glass you're talking about are manual lenses, you can only see the aperture changes on the lens itself, not through the viewfinder, since the lens and camera don't communicate to each other. I wonder if you're thinking about ai or ais lenses on the older Nikon 35mm SLR's? I have a Nikon FM and through the viewfinder on that camera I can read the aperture settings on my AIS lenses when mounted to it!
The Ai and Ais lenses have slightly better coatings than the E series lenses but only slightly but still very good lenses and are going up in price. Another Nikon Nikkor alternative is the pre Ai which some have a, Ai conversion on them but this doesn't really matter if you've adapting them. The ones with the letter C ( 50mm f2 auto HC for example) are multi coated without the C they are single coated.

Hey Spencer I am having the same problem you had with the Nikon 24mm hitting the back of the viltrox Speedbooster. Question what did you use to grind down the metal ?
I am interested to know, since these lenses might contain fungus sometimes can such lens in any way contaminate your other lenses? I will most probably go for one of these lenses as in photography you always have to experiment a bit :). Thanks.
That's a good question! I would think no just because the fungus is in the internals between the glass elements, so the fungus on one lens wouldn't physically touch another lens, but I have no idea how fungus contamination works haha!
Hey man! I actually debated between the Contax Zeiss and Nikon AIS lenses. I ultimately chose the Nikons because they were a bit cheaper at the time, I'm not sure what the prices are as of now. I hear great things about both brands!

What an underrated channel! Love this video and the information you put out, as a fellow Pocket 4k + Viltrox user, I have some questions. Which brand of Nikon F - EF adapter did you use? Stacking it to the Viltrox Speedbooster, does your infinity focus land perfectly on the infinity mark on the lens? Have you found any other issues using it with a Viltrox + Pocket ? Thank you
Hey brother thank you so much for the kind words! I use Fotodiox F - EF mount adapters on my lenses. I've found that infinity focus works completely fine except there was a certain time when my Viltrox mount was missing a screw and was pulling away from the body of the speedbooster when it was mounted to a camera and when a lens was mounted to the viltrox, therefore it was being pulled from both ends and I wasn't able to hit infinity focus because the speedbooster real element was being pulled further away from the camera sensor. Nothing a little super glue fixed when I glued down the mount of the viltrox to the body to keep it from pulling away from each other! Sometimes on the Pocket the IRIS control doesn't work, it doesn't happen often but it's a simple lens reattachment to get it back in working order.
