Thank you for your video. Because of it my husband was able to install our fist water heater. You save us about $900. It take us about 7 hours for take it off old one and install a new one. Since we don't know how to soldering, we use Shark bite connector for cold and hot water. Thanks for sharing your video and may God bless you:)
I appreciate your video, And i thank you for talking to that guy and showing him some support, That was very nice of you. Thank God for people like you who show some empathy. God bless you.
after watching all these guys talk about earthquake straps and tossing the tank in an empty garage with "corrosion" being a foreign word, where i'm wondering how to wiggle this thing into a finished basement around a furnace (another "foreign word for the above mentioned) it's nice to finally find a relatable video that is actually helpful. Thanks guy.
Plumbing place wanted $1750 for a 40 gallon Richmond gas water heater. I bought a AO Smith from lowes instead for $529. Savings $1200. That $1200 difference is a lot for a couple hours labor. Learning to do more things on my own and saving big $.
Great videos. You've helped me do several now and good stuff man! Love it. And I use shark bites too, but always want to be able to solder if I have to. I love your old school plumbing. Great soldering. AND, I hope the guy is cancer free too! And you handled the test-test-erone with kindness and grace. Very funny
Great message again Steve.. but dissipointing to see that you didn't change the old Stop and waste shut off valve.. myself I will always replace those type, for my customers, even inside of a rental.. still love you Steve and respect your knowledge and experience regardless.. thank you Robert Jr NJ here Asbury Park..
GUYS, get your PSA checked at age 50. If family has prostate cancer history, start testing at age 40. If your test result is more than 4.00, you could have cancer. If your # is in the hundreds, start making plans. The PSA test at age 50 saved me. Im 59 now.
Steve, it'd be my pleasure to send you some Crest flux, no charge! Thanks for all the videos you make. When I get in from work, I always check to see if you made a video..lol. I really enjoy them.
The professional guy on the phone was giving me a discount for the price of $1500 all including recycle and a new unit. I just called my neighbor to help me out and installed it took a while but it got it done. Purchase the unit for $650 saved me $850! From the previous unit one of the release pressure pipes has solder i opted out just installed it with teflon tape. Just need to keep an eye on that pipe if any leak accurs then i can purchase a soldering tools and get it done 100% right. I think any one can do it.
Are the vacuum breakers code? Mine doesn’t have it now but I want to do it right when I replace it. Also can I reuse the pressure relief valve? Mine seems to be in good shape.
Steve, is it preferable to use MAP Gas for copper plumbing? I currently use Oxy/Ace for my main job AC/R. My plumbing project is at home, going to tackle it this weekend and want to use oxetylene for the brazing. Didn't want to have to buy more tools.
mapp gas is fine for general soldering... few hundred degrees hotter than propane so keep that in mind..quick hits with the torch and it will flow good.
It ain't easy being cheesy! agreed. A quick question : whats the advantage to hard piping to the water heater vrs. mip and flex line? I prefer the hoses in case there's a problem easier to remove the water heater or tighten a hose or replace a hose ext. Also big fan of Shark Byte , they get a bum rap like 'NickleBAck' !!!
i'm about to buy an 80 gal hybrid heat pump water heater. which one do you guys recommend? i'm leaning towards the Rheem. I also want to put a hot water recirculating pump on it but some people say not to. thoughts?
i'm staying away from the box store "performance" models, the contractor "prestige" ones are the one to go with. i'm going to take a chance with a hot water recirc system but ONLY on a manually activated switch that will circ the water for 1-2 minutes only. If you keep a HWR pump on constantly, it defeats the purpose of the heat pump system as it will be less efficient .
They have programmable ones that operate between certain hours. Watts makes a great circulator pump fittings. their customer care is also outstanding. they can tell you exactly what you need, and you know it will last a life time. you can try your local plumbing supply store, ours are great. price is more but you know you not getting crap. but your milage can vary I guess. That model looks fantastic! I Wish we went with a high efficiency model, my dad wanted old school so its easy to fix, but he spent so much more time with the flue pipe. direct vent is the way to go ! so much easier to deal with pvc than sheet metal garbage then ensuring your chimney is ok, forget about it. Rheem support was very nice. I think either way you can't go wrong. If you are doing the work yourself. or educated enough to get competitive quote. I would suggest the line size going to your shower is the right size though, we have a crazy 1 inch pipe going and it takes forever for the shower to get hot. Going to run a new pex line directly. That alone should minimize the waste, since there isnt that much water to drain anyway. why didnt you you go with tankless btw?
FYI CO detectors are not supposed to be installed directly beside gas fired appliances. Why? Because they always backdraft for a bit when they'e cold, before the exhaust starts travelling up the vent pipes. Having CO Detectors too close can cause too many false alarms. Read the instruction manuals. They tell you to keep them at least 15 feet away.
The guy wanted to make sure the joint had enough solder it! No big deal! More solder = more betterer, right? LOL. Tinning flux is just that. It's flux with very tiny solder balls suspended in it.
I have watched too many of your videos and have started to pick up some of your sayings. If something is super tight.... it is a "wow" and if something is messed up it is a "not good".
ok lets take it apart. nobody in their mind would use a gate valve. never open a t&p valve it will start leaking. never use pvc for drainline. over heated the pipe and cooked the flux right out. when the solder changes from liquid to solid again it passes through the creamy stsge at that wipe the top of the fitting to fill in any gap. always test the thermostat. always check the down draft diverter for venting. i will give you a D in plumbing skills.
Ralph Riffle .. cpvc is rated for 180 degrees and is perfectly acceptable for a blow off tube.... myself I reuse the original one and clean it up a bit.. also I myself agree to give the customer a updated ball valve and cut off the old Stop and waste shut off valve, always.. but still, Steve is extremely knowledgeable and I feel that he is treating this as a rental typical situation.. . I would have changed it though regardless.. Robert Jr NJ here Asbury Park
+Porta Rocc i made thoes commets so viewers will be aware that safty checks must be made. if a home owner gets killed your looking at 7 years in prison for man slaughter. fyi. i have been a plumber for 40 years and that includes apprentiship and ojt. in addition before anyone playes with gas appliances they better know about controls. my knowledge also includes trainning at the gas company. there are people that do plumbing and then there are plumbers
Ralph who's to say Steve didn't do those checks off camera? He did mention he had to check the fittings with soap bubbles for leaks so maybe he did the other checks. Steve has always seemed to be safety conscious so I would sleep well and not worry.

Nice install Steve. Your sweat soldering looks like art. The previous guy's solder job looked like crap!
You are lucky it is cool there. High 80s to low 90's here in GA. The leaves are falling, that's a plus.
Thanks for yet another educational and entertaining video! Looked to be a beautiful day in MA!
Steve, you always take pride in your work. Nice job. Give it the ole gundy!

I just installed my water heater 2 days ago. Everything went good, i just get nervous when soldering pipes lol.

Nice install H/W tank.. Steve
Nice job Steve glad you changed those poor soldering fitting
" We don't want no Leekahs!... Put some fritz on it! 👍 😂

propane gas or axc is what you need for soft solder oxy / ace is way to hot
steven lavimoniere Thanks Steve!
mapp gas is fine for general soldering... few hundred degrees hotter than propane so keep that in mind..quick hits with the torch and it will flow good.
i agree with steve.. oxy/ace is to break loose rusted front end parts in your truck lol
How long did it take for the water to heat up

what did you use onthat water line an 90 and astreet elbow to make the connection, great video
Do you ever do combustion analysis on water heaters?
i'm about to buy an 80 gal hybrid heat pump water heater. which one do you guys recommend? i'm leaning towards the Rheem. I also want to put a hot water recirculating pump on it but some people say not to. thoughts?
I spoke to the guys at rheem. seems like a solid company, I dont think you can go wrong, see if you can find a rebate or home depot promo.

why didnt you you go with tankless btw?
no gas, propane was an option but $$$.
New...dam you know uo job!
thanks you fore the vidio iapreate it tanks pall
Yo Steve, how much you make off your brass scrap in a year?
FYI
CO detectors are not supposed to be installed directly beside gas fired appliances. Why? Because they always backdraft for a bit when they'e cold, before the exhaust starts travelling up the vent pipes. Having CO Detectors too close can cause too many false alarms. Pressure must be good to use 1/2 copper??
The road dog!!!
Steve, sometime show us what the anode rod looks like on a water heater this old.
Oh man. So hard to get out. I've tried on 4 and was only able to take out one and it took 40 mins
Hey Steve!
Are thermostatic mixing valves code in Mass for new water heater installs?
Thanks! Like watching your videos btw.
no code for valve at the tank.....shower faucet must have one of them.
Just wondering why is the steel coupling on the gas illegal in Massachusetts? They are legal here in Texas.
Probably tapered vs non tapered thread of coupling.
Why don't they bring 3/4" out of the water heater? I have seen you change a few and they are all 1/2". In Iowa we bring 3/4" out of the water heater?
i find 1/2 is just fine for up to 2 baths and kitchen, IMO.
I don't think so. That is too many fixture units for 1/2" pipe?
it all depends. if it's new construction, you do it the right way. if you're the guy coming in after someone else, you work with what you got.
No support straps ?
do not need those in massachusetts
The guy wanted to make sure the joint had enough solder it! No big deal! More solder = more betterer, right? LOL. Tinning flux is just that. It's flux with very tiny solder balls suspended in it.
Steven
How much do you charge for replacing the water heater?
Let's guess up in NE USA 1k to 1200k ?
I have watched too many of your videos and have started to pick up some of your sayings. If something is super tight.... it is a "wow" and if something is messed up it is a "not good".
Fancy car on vacation to Dallas Texas
Mine split on the bottom. I shut off the cold water inlet then called my plumber.. best here so often I tell him he dont need to knock anymore
Why don't you put flex pipe on there easier
"Scrap" makes my mouth wadda
Not bad
gotta admit when i was first learning solder it looked like that....whole roll for a few joints lol
i hope the person who soldered those joints is watching!!! what a disgusting job
three inch flue pipe is not legal to use anymore Steve you should've update the flue pipe.
Henry Lonervo did they changed the law in mass? In Connecticut as far as I know it’s still 3”
I though all of them now had electric igniters?
Custom job here. 😂
The other water heater should be replaced as well since it's so rusted at the top crumbling apart
Should not mix two different metals, we have to use a dielectric union at the tank.
Noman Jones
How long have u been a plumber?
Cause Steve has over 20yrs!!
I'll wait.....
Dielectrics are a joke. They are better than nothing but only separation by 6" of brass or stainless will stop corrosion entirely
Every time I try to drain a water heater no water comes out due to sediment build up.
It's not often you see soldering like that!
Put some fritz on it! I say that at work.
Been told testing PRV on water heaters the fuckers may leak after that ,had it happen to me brand new .
Who's one first what's on second I don't know who's on third woah mamma!
You don't believe in using shark bite hoses, wouldn't that be easier?
Holy shit that foundation looks Janky as all hell. With a flooding issue? Wow is that a water line on yhat btick basemebt wall?
Steve's I was texting me the wrong person
new hw tank wont last half as long...smh
more scrap for Steve..$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
I don't think that was steam. It might have been the check valves melting. But I'm no plumber...
Why do you wear gloves lol
ok lets take it apart. nobody in their mind would use a gate valve. never open a t&p valve it will start leaking. never use pvc for drainline. over heated the pipe and cooked the flux right out. when the solder changes from liquid to solid again it passes through the creamy stsge at that wipe the top of the fitting to fill in any gap. always test the thermostat. always check the down draft diverter for venting. i will give you a D in plumbing skills.

He didn’t use PVC. He used CPVC, which is code complaint in many states for this use, as long as the adapter is metal threaded.
Ralph Riffle
Do you have any idea how long this man has been a plumber!!
U can't be serious.
Just watch the video and don't comment
