  • In this special edition of The Telegraph’s Ukraine: The Latest podcast, the team appeared on stage at the US Embassy in London for a live recording.
Jane Hartley, America’s ambassador to the UK opened the event, saying: “The United States and our allies continue to have one goal in mind: to see that Ukraine wins this war.”
Telegraph journalists David Knowles, Francis Dearnley and Dominic Nicholls were joined by Orysia Lutsevych, the head of the Ukraine forum at Chatham House and Ambassador William B. Taylor, America’s former ambassador to Ukraine and current vice president, Europe and Russia, at the US Institute of Peace.

I don't agree with that narrative at all... it's based on the idea that Russias goals are to conquer Europe which in itself is a baseless claim. If anybody has paid attention since the 2007 Munich speech they know the real reasons that Putin invaded Ukraine are not ideas of expansions and conquering Europe. Even Putin critics say that when he speaks he is sincere... and by that i mean he is not lying about his reasons for the conflict, there is no hidden motive of conquering Europe, it's about NATO expansion, Russian ethnics and fighting back against the US led NATO containment policies.

An absolutely unprovoked Russian invasion of Ukraine. Absolutely unprovoked!
In 2014, an illegal, unconstitutional coup d'etat took place in Ukraine, with the support of Europe and the United States. It's so democratic.
Several regions of Ukraine do not agree with this coup d'etat; they are beginning to resist the invaders, who for some reason are supported by Europe and the USA. Is this democracy? A civil war begins.
After 8 years, Russia intervenes in this conflict to stop the civil war in Ukraine. Europe and the United States are beginning to overwhelm Ukraine with their weapons.
Who is to blame here? Hint: Russia. What was the invasion? Hint - Absolutely not provoked by either Europe or the USA.

@jozefciszewski2074 I do not believe that Russia intends to occupy the whole of Ukraine and, I do not believe that Russia intends to go into the rest of the European countries.
The reason is very simple. The Russians have no desire to be faced with popular uprisings and fight a permanent guerrilla war like many occupied European countries fought against the German army during World War II.
Moreover it is said that Russia has hundreds of billions of unexploited resources and there is nothing to be found in Europe, no more minerals, no oil or gas, the industry is not productive anymore and even great scientists are no more living in Europe. The title alone is proof positive that the west has lost it's way. Winning a war by proxy is more important than doing what was right for Ukrainians of all allegiances (honoring Minsk2). My wife is Ukrainian, low and behold she wants nothing to do with all that our leaders in the west are selling. She grew up in eastern Ukraine and sees this for what it is, a coup staged by Nuland and friends to weaken Russia only to have it boomerang right back on the west. That the whole commentariat is so morally obtuse and lacks historical context is even more baffling. I hail from Chile where the US pulled another regime change (on 9/11 no less, 1973 however). The western governments care nothing for helping people in need, they wouldn't let Gaza be incinerated if they did, they care only for PR wins and posturing to be holier than thou when in reality we do only that which enriches us at the detriment of other nations. Leaving behind nations in ruin and millions exiled. Iraq, Syria, Libya, Chile, Myanmar/Burma, Vietnam, Japan, so on and so forth. It's sad that people still fall for the tried and true guise of manufactured consent. At some point one would think that folks would circle back, despite the predisposition to get bored and moving on to the next, and contrast and compare what was said from what came to pass to see we're constantly duped. WMDs... oh wait there are none. Assad must go... oh wait, we're still there occupying oil fields illegally. Russiagate... oh wait it was made up in a think tank to demonize Trump whilst spying on your own citizens without a court order. A lot of my wife's family members are on the front line, on the side that is on the right side of history. Not on the Bandera adulating crazies that lost their way. Sooner or later the dust will settle and people will forget to look back to see that it was all a sham to sell more weapons at the expense of all Ukrainians while their leaders enriched themselves. Disgusting behavior that we, citizens of the west, enable by believing at face value all the nonsense our media make up.

"The western governments care nothing for helping people in need". They care about Ukraine - but not enough. If they cared enough they'd give the Ukrainians the tools they need to expel the Russians from their land. Here's hoping their level of care increases going forward.

The point that USA spent 0.25% of GDP fighting in Afghanistan vs. the Taliban vs "only" 0.19% currently supporting Ukraine in the fight against Russia was an interesting one. It speaks to what is the highest priority. There were certainly good arguments for spending $2trillion over the years in Afghanistan to TRY TO (though ultimately it failed on multiple fronts) defeat the Taliban and setup a democratic national government in a peaceful Afghanistan with fair and equal "western standard" treatment for women. However, seems to me from a NATO or EU perspective that preventing Mr. Putin's further territorial ambitions, especially in the "grey zones" like Moldova, Albania, Serbia or even the front line NATO states like Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and maybe even Finland would be a higher priority and therefore worth spending a higher % of GDP. Useful and interesting framing by Orysia Lutsevych.

How ironic that the US spent over $2 Trillion trying to "create" a democratic nation and here is Ukraine who has fought for their freedom and democracy through the Orange Revolution and now fighting like warrior poets for their young democratic nation and the GOP is like......."nah......we don't want to support them." The American border has been a huge issue for over 40 years, even throughout the Afghan and Iraq wars. Yet, the GOP was all in on these wars. The GOP controlled all three houses twice during this period and did nothing. Those of us old enough to remember, the border was a huge issue during the Bush years and made it the primary issue during the mid-term elections during that period. After the election they passed a border wall bill and then mockingly refused to fund it.

Border security is in the bill, but Trump doesn't want it passed so he can campaign on border security and blaming the left for not doing it.

The border issue is a ruse. Trump has an obsessive vendetta against Zelensky, even to the point of letting an evil Russia oppress more people.

Not thought provoking at all. These talking-heads have said nothing that isn't obvious. Before the war, I read that Russia's economy was equivalent to the economy of Italy. Yet, Russia has out produced the combined economic powers of the US and Europe.

When Putin took the Crimea by force, the collective West just stood by saying “naughty boy” and did nothing.
As a Brit (in exile) I’m ashamed of the way we abandoned Ukraine in their time of need, when we promised them by treaty, our protection.
