    Until I sign my hockey checks on the back and not the front, it's straight bar for me!

    Dumb idea, why not add single kevlar high tensile strings across the open areas? You can get 200-300 lb string that would stop sticks and blades, not intended to stop a puck though.

    I would imagine that in the less glamourous levels of hockey they do not change pucks, or inspect them like in the pros . One hard one at the post then a shot to the mask that may fragment the puck into 2 or 3 pieces or 5 parts like outside at the rink ! Cold day even my punney arms [will /have ] shattered pucks with a wrist shot hitting the nets crossbar into 5 pieces . My father always warned me of that as a kid when I wanted one ! He also told me that if I wore those Gretzky Daust skates I wanted that they would somehow go through the bottoms of my skate boot and mame me too , and walked away from that part of the store ! My mother also told me not to get the Speedo swimming goggles for the YMCA swimming , because the water pressure would suck the eye pieces into my skull as well , because they were cheapo or we couldn't afford them at the Bay . Hasek dominated wearing a shit mask...i think our vision obstructed claims are over rated. same goes for our addiction to buying hte latest and shiniest equipment. most of the updates are marketing and wont make us a better goalie

  • @rivefall6845
    @rivefall6845 5 лет назад +3

    Also player blades are shorter so less likely to fit through I guess

      Probably, but all I have are goalie skates. Overall point is that while it’s not very common at all, the cat eye opening does allow for things to get in, either all the way or at least somewhat. The most eye opening (no pun intended) thing to me was the player stick blade and that it could just straight up go completely into the mask. I think if anything that’s the biggest danger more so that anything a puck or skates could do.

    The only goalie I've seen with a skate issue was Malarchuk in Buffalo... that wasn't through the mask, but below it on the neck..... I know I grew up with these masks predecessors... the 70's masks... and Gerry Dejardins ended his career due to a puck to the eye and Bernie Parent due to a stick.... I've always loved the Edwards/Sauve and later Hasek helmet/mask combo... and the mask style is also safer with the small squares...

    I’m 30 and I always played with a straight bars cage and while playing I’ve never paid attention to hit, I don’t see it at all.

  • @lostnumbr

    if you want better vision without a stick blade fitting through, then go with a cheater cage. still not CSA approved but beer league refs don't know or care.
    malarchuk got a blade to the throat so... (fleury too)
    the ban on cateyes in Canada for all hockey below pro came from a couple of goalies being seriously injured from sticks in the eye.

    I have a cat eye right now as I just got a sport mask with one. I am not a huge fan of the visibility out of it. I am living with it as I got other things I rather pay for, also I don't fully know what model of sports mask I have. I know its just an xl that had a fresh foam kit in it lol. It fits my head, what matters to me. My head went out the back really bad in a nme 8.

    Player stakes are rounded at the tip so almost no change for it to go in, well,,,unless the other goalie decides to skate 200 feed and karate kick you in the face!

    I wish I could use a cat eye cage, but at my age level I cannot under USA hockey rules. I wish me and my parents could just sign a slip that said they approve of me wearing a cat eye cage.

    • @L7spider
      @L7spider  5 лет назад +1

      I went through the same thing when I was a kid. It is what it is. Have you tried the certified cat eye cage? I just used the straight bar when I was younger. Never tried the cert cat eye, so I don’t know if it’s a lot better than the straight bar.

    • @JakeT420
      @JakeT420 5 лет назад +1

      L7spider I haven’t used a certified cat eye. But I would like to try it to see the difference between straight bar and cert cat eye. But I don’t think the cert cat eyes look very good so I never really wanted to buy one and put it on my mask. But I might try one next season to see how it compares to a straight bar.

    • @JakeT420
      @JakeT420 5 лет назад +1

      L7spider Update: I bought a Bauer Certified cat eye cage. There is certainly more visibility down low and more and better overall visibility. With the straight bar I found myself looking around bars and with this cert cat eye it is much better visibility. Not as good as the non cert cat eye, but it will suffice until I can use a non cert cat eye.

    In Hockey Canada we aren't allowed to where cat eye cage. I found it odd though that the other 13 individuals on on the ice including the the ref's are allowed to wear 4 inch piece of plastic covering their face and that's it.
