Making Plasma Cutting Machine

- Track makes cutting metal very easy is accurate and fast. The machine is equipped with two strong electromagnets so that the cut piece is stable and does not move during cutting. I used an old screwdriver 12v I found on the scrap metal. To power the screwdriver and electromagnets I used a 12v 16A dual channel power supply, and a speed controller to control the screwdriver's rotation. Thanks to the adjustable length, we can adjust the machine's distance to the size of the piece to be cut.

"Anyone can make something with GOOD equipment", I recall a machine shop foreman saying in response to complaints about dull end mills and worn out Bridgeports. But, it takes someone truly resourceful to make something like this with drill presses and grinders. Really nicely done! Subscribed.
A lead screw and bar stock, not really that hard to make. But for what it does, it's overly complex, and will just be far more hassle trying to control your level of dross with a potentiometer. The the actual setting it up. You're better off just using a simple guide.
I think everyone else watching figured he was working on an x axis gantry setup, for as much as he put into this.
@@FlipLoLz For 30+ years I've used a pair of vice grips and a heavy piece of angle iron to achieve the exact same result.
And it's quicker to set up and cost free, finding an elaborate expensive way to do a simple task doesn't always pay off.
😅
And once again I have been proven Wrong!! There is professional, intelligent people still living on this earth. Thank you great build! From start to the finish product! Cheers! Jp
I spent the whole video wondering when he was going to start making the y-axis. Then realised... oh.
Very nice build all the same.
I especially liked the electromagnet clamps.
Congrates on putting all that in on under 20 minites! All it needs now is a bungy hung from the ceiling to hold the plasma cord/hose up from work and a cut-off switch on each end to shut down feed when it reaches the ends of travel. Well done.
This is an excellent work from every point of view; Learning, understanding, ideas, what else every corner. You are an excellent planner, designer, developer. Good job my friend
The tools used are amazing, my boss, everything is sophisticated.
Excellent use of an old drill. I really like the final result. It seems better than by hand. But, I do a fairly good job with a foot to hold the correct height and a straight edge to follow.
Micro switches for end of travel would be a nice touch. Nice build!
The limit switches are absolutely required ! Good job !
Thank you 😁 I set the clutch in the screwdriver so that it would stop driving the screw after hitting an obstacle
This level of fabrication is on another level! I wish that I had the know how to create things like this!
Really nice Job Step by Step, good Construction. The only one thing : I would Set two switches . One on Start and one adjustable at the end to save the Cordless screwdriver for overturn.
He did explained that, no need to use those switches since he's using the clutch on the drill, that makes the machine less complicated but still can be added later if he wants.
All the suggestions about limit switches are completely misplaced. The clutch on the drill is fine to use as the limiting mechanism. Amazing how many bookworms completely miss the simplicity of this design. AND, he got the drill from a scrap heap. I built highly complex injection molds for most of my life, and I know when precision is required, and I know when it isn't. Nothing wrong or deficient in the design. Plasma cutting is not in any way aerospace precision.
@@Vodichka9 oh man, thats right , I forgot the clutch . So simpel so easy
Great Device !!! The work of the master is excellent. Plus. Thank you. Peace to your home. I'm from Russia.
Excellent build Sir. I love the way your mind works. Thanks for sharing this with us.
That is an amazing project, beautifully done. You ate a master prototyper and fabricater..
"Залип".и смотрел как загипнотизированный!!! МАСТЕР, Вы просто молодец!!!!
Аналогично 😁👍
guys like this make it seem easy but kudos to you well done.
You are certainly a match for Make it Extreme or Donn DIY. I wish you more views and subscribers. Beautiful build, again.
Amazing work, great speed, showing all the steps, many thanks.
I feel like this is going to be one of my favorite channels. Kudos.
Wranglestar has some great videos
Исполнение хорошее.
По названию можно подумать, что автор сейчас сделает плазморез с нуля, но это видео про автоматическую направляющую каретку для ручного плазмореза.
Идея с магнитами заслуживает отдельного уважения.
Extremely well made 👍🏼 just like everything you build
Thank you 😁
I am really fascinated with your real videos. Greetings and big hug from Houston Texas Blessings for you and your family
Wow. That's an impressive piece of kit. !
It is not a handyman 'garage-tuning" level.
It's a professional work!
4:50 - Such a simple but ingenious idea I love it
With how fast you move and the quality of your work, your the best tweaker of all time
It's called time lapse and editing
I was like “that’s pretty cool but it’s only straight cuts” ... then he does a perfect bevel cut 🤯
lol clamp a straight edge and lean your gun to the side hahaha im still confused all this work for a straight edge cut myself.
@@StrapDLBStyle the consumables to cut through material that thick that often is why a plasma cutter is nice I would think
@@StrapDLBStyle I wonder too. I can see it being useful if you have a bunch of stuff to cut but yeah, a straight edge and a steady arm. Mind you, the fact that you can dial in the speeds means you will get a nicer cut. Cool all the same and will hang on the wall out of the way when not in use.
THAT'S alot of work for just a straight edge
Thats what I was thinking, thats alot of work for just a straight edge
Good version of mobile plasma cutting machine! You should equipe it with end switches and a cable support to use it more comfortably. Great work!
Wow that's awesome, great job. You could add limit switches to each end that cut out that directions power feed when it hits the end and only allows going the other direction, just for a little added protection.
I considered this too, but thought of another way of protecting it that would likely be easier: use a cordless drill with a torque setting that just slips when it hits a certain torque. Set it low since this shouldn't actually have to overcome much resistance beyond the stiffness of the Plasma cutter's cable/hose. In my admittedly biased opinion it is an elegant solution.
I think this is a great video.
U have great imagination, skills to even make a CNC plasma cutter. Great video.. thanks for your time to do this and uploading the video for us
That's slick. I'd add some limit switches at the ends. Then you could walk off and let it run when cutting thick steel and not have to sit and watch it. Then either tap into the plasma switch circuit or add a solenoid to activate the torch head.
Or weld like a machine)
@@mabul513 Yep, that too....After seeing this video, I've started thinking about building something like this or along the same lines for my Alaskan Sawmill I use.
@@TheEquineFencer lucky you like my brother. Has enough space to shoot arrows down his hall. While because of him I'm in garage sized room . Strange good die arses get good stuff!

Very Impressive. Great video.
A small tip: When cutting on the band saw, especially flat material, put a wedge under the piece in the vice so the flat material sits at an angle, that way you shorten the amount of material the blade is cutting across. It'll cut through it much faster.
Wouldn't it be cutting through the exact same cross sectional area regardless of orientation?
@@welshdave5263 overall, yes, but with it flat, you are riding the blade on a lot larger surface area at once. Angled, the blade is only engaging a much smaller surface area at any given time. Think of cutting a 2x4 with a hand saw, most cut either at an angle or from the edge, not flat across the width. It's quicker and easier.
@@edwardlance2379 less accurate.
@@Anomaly.Filmworks not in my experience.
@@edwardlance2379 if you cut a flat piece at an angle, you're cutting more than if it was flat.
Total ASMR watching this. Damn great job. Thanks.
That shows very unique and capable skills. Very well done to you.
Cannot get any better than making your own tool. Nice!
then she said; your fired useless.
I love it. Everything about this is great!
This’s a tool that I need! Thanks for taking the time and great video too.
You build such great stuff! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you 😁
Great work, my friend. I wish you success. You can add a switch (Limit Switch Vertical Mechanical End Block ) to automatically disconnect the movement at the end. also you can add (On/Off Push-Button Switch) on control panel as controller (only movement with push the Button switch) and Red Sign Emergency Stop Switch.
Muito bom!!!! Mas vou fazer uma sugestão: instale interruptores de fim-de-curso no carrinho.
Outstanding fabrication and prototyping !
Amazing project I'm sure you will use it well to your advantage. As always a great build . They just start flow and end up as an amazing tool
Thank you 😁
This is a great bit of kit! I saw this being used on one of your other projects first and thought that it was a great use of a plasma cutter. I’ve seen commercial flame cutting versions too.
You need to fit limiter switchers through two DPDT relays so it returns to zero after each cut. A guide wheel to lift the cable at the control box would be good extra.
I was thinking how easy it would be to attach propper stepper motors and arduino board. Place the gantry on two rails for a stable Y axis and turn it into a plasma CNC cutter.
Hahaha that was my thought exactly, where them safety stops! Otherwise this is really nice. I could see it have a HUGE use in a weld school. That's literally perfect for making bar stock to weld on
.
Also adding limiter switch add more safety
A limit switch at each end of travel would prevent the drive motor from stalling out.
Beautifully done.
To add to this awesome idea I would suggest a gaurd for the threads for longevity
Great build! Thanks for sharing. Could you also share some details on the electronics you used. That would be super helpful. Thanks again. Sparky
Very smart invention, useful and practical. Congratulations.
A mechanical genius what a great work thank you!
You sir are truly a gifted Craftsman
Love the project.
For the future, as another two sets of these, to make X and Y and a few steppers or servos and a controller and you'll have one heck of CNC plasma cutter, ohhhh maybe adding a way to swap out the plasma cutter with a CNC rotary tool (a Dremel).
Yeah, I wish I had the tools to do that lol
Super lucrare maestru adevărat.. Felicitări.
Excellent editing and profusely humorous fast motion oh, cool thingy you made there, also😉
Thank you 😁
رائع ومبدع أنت تستحق شهادة تقدير فى تصميم الآلات بإمتياز .
Nice job! Speaking as a robotics engineer, to take your work to the next level you need a sand blasting booth. Removing the mill scale and burrs before and after you manufacture parts, and again before you paint makes the difference in a millimeter or two in length and arch degrees. Your projects produce less undesirable twist and vibration.
That is gobbledygook. You completely miss the point of his design: quick and dirty construction produces straight line plasma cutting. Period. You're a robotics "engineer" and you think sandblasting will take it to the next level?
@@Vodichka9 Be at peace, for God is with you.
Wow. Your skills and shop are impressive!. Wicked cool seeing your idea come to life. Awesome job!!
Thank you 😁
Love this! Great attention to detail and assembly clearances. Still like my angle iron as a guide and 2 welding clamps.

if you look really closely, you can see the plans he's following. If you blinked even once, you probably missed it. Master class craftsman no doubt.
That is so nice.
I have most of the parts In my junk pile.
I'm the same way. BTW, it's not a "junk pile", it's "recyclables parts inventory"...just saying...
brother, that is a work of art!
Great work as always but I think it's missing a couple of automat stop buttons to prevent the machine from screwing itself to death 😂😜😅
Thank you 😁 After reaching the end, the clutch in the screwdriver stops the drive, although the limit switches would be a better solution, but the clutch in the screwdriver also works :)
@@WorkshopFromScratch i Was guessing you would be using the clutch
I enjoyed watching the beautiful video. 👏👏👍👍
Although really cool, it's no so much "Making a Plasma Cutting Machine" it's making a guide table for a plasma cutter or plasma cutter guide track or a plasma cutter slide track. because at no point in this video did you make anything plasma. and the only reason why i came here. To make my own PLASMA Cutting Machine. again, really nice track.

Tend to agree with you but the gentleman or lady has done a great work..
When you buy a plasma cnc it doesn't usually come with the plasma unit unless you purchase a dedicated industrial unit... he did this from scratch applaud his work if you understand fabrication
At first I thought you were going to make a plasma cutter out of two electro magnets. I said " I got to see this "
It's a very nice build, but I wanted to learn about making the cutter.
Next time?
I learned a lot 😀
greetings, I'm from Indonesia ready to be your follower
Brilliant repurposing of those electromagnetic door locks.
I like the bevel cut setting. Awsome job. Watching the video was like watching a craftsman working.
Thank you 😁
true testament to human ingenuity!
You could make it 2 directional by placing one more bar so the head could slide from one side to the other. You'd have to place it underneath current head. Also,. A simple program could be written to cut shapes that you draw instead of manually doing it. It would be a cool upgrade. All on all youre a badass dude. Good job!
Now try to upgrade to CNC with possibility to cut any shape and X&Y movement and some PC controlling speed of 2 motors :) Great Work!
Nicely done. Great hand skills.
Piękna robota . Gratuluje
nice work... add limit switches to each ends so you dont need to stop it manually
Thank you 😁
Straight skills... I am going to assume he's already trying to incorporate automation into nozzle using CAD or similar
Watching this video in 2x speed shows the fabricator didn't even flinch in his process - he knew what to do at all times. 👏
Awesome! I enjoyed watching that build!
Absolutely brilliant! Not sure why you would have any thumbs down, let alone 2.5K, thanks for sharing!
Just amazingly something what I am thinking about to make. I am really under huge impression. Please could you a BOM with sizing, I would really love to copy your project for myself. Thanks in advance.
Damn nice job! My only observation would be to use a surplus automotive power window motor instead of cutting up a dewalt power tool. These can be found, among other places, at an outfit called "surplus center" for under $20. They call them DC wiper motors. You could wire up a simple PWM (pulse width modulation) circuit to give you full torque and infinite speed control. Once again, DAMN NICE WORK!
