I'm glad you're enjoying The Orville. It's great to have a show like that today, they tackle tough subjects and yet they still have that optimistic view of the future.
I've been enjoying both SNW and Orville a lot this year. And I have to agree that Orville, once again is still outperforming a lot of the Nutrek by a long shot. I do miss some of the comedy, however, from Season 3. Some of the jokes from the first two seasons was pretty good.
Love your review, you missed the part about "Charlie" aka Chuckles the Clown being the worse character introduction of any character in decades. Narcissistic, mentally unbalanced, unprofessional danger to the mission and crew.
I'm not going to watch any of these shows, but I'm happy you're enjoying Orville. I love the interior shots especially. Just like the real thing. Keep up the great work Dave. I'm looking forward to your next review.
A significant plot problem with this episode is that Isaac should have been moved off-ship and into a research facility where he can help with Kalon defense solutions. Even his own suicide was "because the crew's performance would be more efficient". If that's the case, why not just resign his position and take on a research job? Why kill himself? Basically Isaac weighed his own existence AND decades or centuries of contribution to the Union against the Orville crew's feelings and efficiency level in the immediate. And I thought he was supposed to be smart.
There can be a relatively easy explanation of why Isaac remains on the Orville and not working on a research facility: They do not want him directly involved in any counter-measure developments, the risk would simply be to high as the possibility that he helps design hidden weaknesses or covertly leaks out the defensive measures to the Kaylon. Though this explanation isn't even needed, from his interactions with the crew of the Orville he found out that even those who liked/wanted/needed him most didn't want him active, so the logical conclusion is that no where else in the Union would want him active as well. It could even logically flow that many others outside the Orville itself would view his deactivation favorably. It's an easy conclusion to come to in his situation: He is not wanted or needed. Besides that, due to the alternate timeline we KNOW that Isaac takes the actions he does because of Dr. Finn and her children specifically; and those would be the individuals that will have the most impact on his actions.
@@rahn45 It's especially hammered home how important the Finns are to Isaac in his suicide note. It consists entirely of dry technical recommendations, except for the closing line "I offer my best wishes to the Finn family". They're literally the only thing of personal importance he says anything about with his intended final words.
I don't know so much. I tried the first 3 ep's of The Orville. (From that famous black sails site.) It feels to me like the wokeness is creeping in. They've clearly been given a larger budget because popularity, but with it comes the pointed gun to "push the message". My prediction is that by the end of the series, it'll be as bad a nu-trek.
Glad someone said this, it's only a matter of time. Something comes out that ends up grabbing everyone's attention and gets high praise, then at the moment of glory, in comes the wokeness and other garbage. It's been a common theme with most media.
@@tomcruisenukedmyaccount5388 Hey, RUclips have decided that your comment is a persona non grata. So it isn't being displayed. But I agree, it always was woke, and it's getting worse.
Glad you enjoyed this ep... there has been some discourse over this season as we are 3 eps in, but the discourse already started from this premiere ep. Ironically some people missed the humor and felt this ep was a bit too heavy for having been away for too long... and people continue to miss that humor as 3 eps in, the show is more serious... the jokes are lighter but are still there throughout each ep though.
I first noticed The Orville on Hulu about 2 weeks ago and saw it was a Seth MacFarlane thing. Hesitant to watch, thinking it would be an A Million Way to Die in the West slapstick nonsense. But gave it a shot, ended up binge watching the entire 1st season. Then found out its already 5 years old and baffled me. Surprised I hadn't ever heard of it before. Definitely not the Family Guy/vulgar/Die in the West MacFarlane style I expected. Pretty good show, been looking forward to see the new episodes coming out. Really like the direction I think its going. But don't know how to feel about Teleya. She's a pretty good kind of cliffhanger character, I really don't know what she'll do.
I was desperately looking forwards to The Orville returning, so was nicely surprised that it didn’t disappoint with its first episode (strangely with very similar plot points and use of the faked explosion of the ship tactic used in an episode of Strange New Worlds weeks apart so too close to be copied from each other, but strange coincidence both shows had the same idea?). I was immediately impressed by the higher budgets, but like you even more impressed that the show hadn’t gone brain dead in favour of the bigger effects budget. The fact that it covered such topical subjects as suicide, grief, anger/hatred from the Kaylon attack and not only dealt with them maturely but covered how it affected everyone in the crew differently shows how much the writers are invested in their characters. The second episode does faulter slightly, and heavily references a next generation Geordi centric episode (I won’t say which for spoilers, but any next gen fan will get it) but the 3rd episode of the season does a great job of setting up mystery whilst also building on past episode events and characters. Despite some backsliding mis-steps in recent weeks in Strange New Worlds, it has also been of a similarly good standard of writing well above anything Discovery or Picard. And I have hopes it will recover after seeing the teaser for episode 8 which looks like something we would have gotten in the original series of Star Trek. What’s surprised me most about Orville and SNW is that they’ve both been so consistently more like classic trek than Discovery or Picard ever were. I don’t know about Orville’s writers but I suspect in the case of SNW Alex Kurtzman may have been ‘infected’ with the realisation that great sci-fi is about the exploration of the human condition after his work on his other new show The Man Who Fell To Earth (with Chewitel Ejiofor) which has been some of the most amazing science fiction recently on television - and was created and directed BY. Kurtzman! I recommend you investigate at least the first episode of that to see how much it seems to have influenced him.
I imagine cbs/now paramount is kicking themselves in the butt now, seeing that Seth went to them a while ago and begged to do a star trek tv show. They chose poorly. ☹️
I am glad I don't have sosphicated mind like yours because I can enjoyed all the episodes in Strange New Worlds and replay it all over and over again And thank you for show me what kind of person you are , I don't watch all the show that you comment it so I don't it's truth or not but I watch Strange New Worlds and I loved it , I guess I gonna stop clicking your video then
Star Trek has always been progressive, since inception its been ‘woke’. What’s changed in the last decade is it’s shifted from discussing issues to preaching. Vilifying anyone with an opposing point of view. What Orville retains is the ability to explore both sides. Even when someone is patently wrong their view is respected. You get where they’re coming from. Orville asks us to think about issues, it doesn’t tell us what to think about them.
I haven't watched the latest episode of Strange New Worlds, but I have watched all of The Orville Season 3 episodes so far. They definitely still do a better "Star Trek" show than the actual Star Trek series currently out now. The 3rd episode, released yesterday 6/15, reminded me of TNG's 'Where Silence Has Lease'. I don't want to spoil it too much for those that haven't watched it but it had this mysterious lab-type vibe like Nagilum did. Come to find out it ties back to a Season 1 episode. The Orville is still a great show and I hope that Seth and Co make more seasons.
im a trekkie and i love orville. SNW is totally okay after the last 2 desasters Discovery and Picard. its not perfect, but no Star trek was ever perfect. Thats part of it, its humanity.
I wouldn't give up on Strange New Worlds just yet. Yeah, it's still Kurtzman Trek and largely insults what Star Trek is about, but it's actually the best Star Trek since JJ took over. They've got the formula and format of what made the older series so successful down pretty well. That being said, it still needs a lot of work. They really need to fix the dialog and stop making officers talk to each other like they're in college, but it looks like they're trying to make an effort overall. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'm somewhat enjoying the show despite it's massive flaws. Maybe I've just accepted that the bar has been lowered pretty much to the floor, but I don't walk away from a SNW episode with utter contempt as I have with Discovery and Picard. The Orville is a far superior production and it'll be interesting to compare these two series side-by-side as they progress.
SNW is awesome and pretty conservative friendly so far. New Spock is awesome and true to the original series, and Sybok is back. Chapel also is cool. (Pike needs some work though, and a couple characters disappeared.) The trans character is a well written and entertaining villain (and a real trans) while Orville basically promotes gay marriage and promoted gender altering surgery of infants through very thin metaphor. Also, there were those worm aliens in the Next Gen era (and in Discovery). I'm sick of online political narratives with massive holes (like George Lucas being a hero and Sarah Connor not being a left wing character and the first two Superman movies being respectful). The left wingers are more consistent. (Even the cultural left wingers won't support Picard.)
I decided to watch the Orville after your review. I've really enjoyed it. I hadn't given it much thought before. Thanks. And while Isaac's character has many shades of Data, there are definitely some major differences - mainly in his lack of desire to become human. Isaac is perfectly content to just be Isaac. It's been really fun to catch up to this point. I'd love to have more Orville content.
JP from Talking the Orville does a great job with this show. Check out his channel. The show runners have given him great access. He has cast interviews and was invited to the premier.
I'm glad Seth McFarlane is a true fan of Star Trek. He sees the optimistic future that could happen while still making light of it. If Picard wounded your Star Trek love, the Orville proudly carries the torch. I just hope the woke doesn't seep in and corrupt it.
This season is shaping up to be the best. Episode 3:3 Was the best of all Orville IMO and had it been a TNG episode it would easily be in their top 10.
SNW has likable characters, TOS like humor (which works) and pretty good plots. Unlike STD/Picard I find the woke moments mostly brief and easily ignored. The Orville is great, but watching most recent episodes of both shows coupla days ago, I enjoyed SNW most recent episode more than Orville.
SNW is awesome. (New Spock is metal, and Sybok is back.) It's pretty conservative friendly. Orville literally promotes gay marriage, gender altering surgery of infants, and atheism.
Watched both seasons 1 and 2 and the first episode’s of New Horizons and I’m hooked. As someone who use to be a fan of Dr Who (before the woke BS was injected into the programme), I akin the Orville to shows like Babylon 5, Red Dwarf and Farscape, but the writing highlights how sci-fi programmes should be written today particularly in episode’s like the Identity two parter. Never really been a fan of Star Trek but understand it’s a parody based on the show, and the reactions from others who’d followed the franchise have said more positive feedback for The Orville compared to the actual Trek shows today (because of the woke ideology tripe their all filled with).
SNW wasn't really doing the new Trek thing of being pushy with an ideology. They talked about an issue without talking about it, which is exactly what Trek has always done.
I agree. The character is an entertaining and unhinged villain and possibly the minion of a cult leader lover. Also, the actor obviously was born that way.
@@tomcruisenukedmyaccount5388 I won't pretend to understand gender stuff more than anyone else, I dunno if she was born that way any more than I know if I was born gay. Doesn't matter to me much though, it's a thing that exists and as you say the character worked. The insight into Spock's internal drama was genuinely interesting to me, and Star Trek is at its best when dealing with a real world issue in not so literal terms. Lovely stuff. Some people have made it their living to dunk on anything vaguely woke it seems... who has the agenda now? :p
@@elvishpresley185 No kidding. SNW tends to be kind of conservative anyway, especially for Star Trek. The Una episode is the wokest, but it's alright. I suspect they are trying to reach non-westerners. Not sure how anyone can claim SNW is more "progressive" than Orville.
@@elvishpresley185 And new Spock is awesome now. This is my favorite version of Spock surprisingly. This is the first time we've seen the real Spock character since the OS. (Nimoy is kind of a mystical wise man and friendly uncle in most of the movies.) I like how he is more modernist than other Vulcans like in the OS. (Pike is good, but he needs some work. Chapel also is cool. I like all of the characters a lot except for Una who is a bland 90s character. La'an is another favorite.) And I'm pumped for Sybok. Finally, he's back.
@@tomcruisenukedmyaccount5388 Very excited to explore Sybok a bit more. Love Pike but he is a little bit cookie cutter. Also love Una. Kinda love them all except La'an who seems to only have an aggressive tone but I can deal cos memento mori was so great cos of her. I do love this Spock I'm just a bit confused why when TOS Spock was very chilled and tranquil modern Spocks seem to all be very intense and uptight.
Would have liked it if the kaylon fight had the improvements Isaac suggested be helpful in the fight. It would help the lady change her mind about healing Isaac.
Isaac can neither live nor die. It’s just a robot, and I feel nothing for it, except perhaps antipathy due to the danger it poses. Might be interesting to explore whether it even has consciousness. I wouldn’t think so.
Episode one had one scene that I couldn't swallow, and that *was* the "test fight" scene. I don't care if it the most stunning special effect in the 2020s. I simply will not accept a The Union Fleet to be STUPID enough to do *live fire*, high speed combat tests around an active and populated shipyard! No, I still can not swallow that scene, that is abject secret hideout level idiotic writing, nearly unforgivable.

@@Brismo7 as a fan himself of sci fi he appreciates and understands what the fans want. His approach to difficult topics and how to incorporate them into a story really reminds me of the essence of what i used to love about Star Trek.
Agree!
One thing to be said about ST:SNW Ep7 is how the 'trans' character is portrayed as a selfish psychopath villain...
Thank you dave, God bless ☘
I'm glad you're enjoying The Orville. It's great to have a show like that today, they tackle tough subjects and yet they still have that optimistic view of the future.
Fantastic show. Great writing. Stellar effects.
I just started watching the Orville. Can't wait to get to this episode 👍😁
Star Trek has struggled to make up the ground it lost with Discovery, whereas The Orville seems to have taken up where it left off.
I have to say The test flight scene actually seemed weird , testing a craft in a dense environment with close calls everywhere seemed silly
FINALLY someone's talking about season 3 of the Orville!
I love the Orville, fantastic series.
Absolutely HATE Charly's character and actress (not IRL hate).
I've been enjoying both SNW and Orville a lot this year. And I have to agree that Orville, once again is still outperforming a lot of the Nutrek by a long shot. I do miss some of the comedy, however, from Season 3. Some of the jokes from the first two seasons was pretty good.
I think the reason the Orville is so good is that an ardent Trekkie is creator and producer.
Good to see you keeping to a regular update schedule Dave. Hope the 'real world' isn't getting you down too much. :-)
I hope it is.
Season 3 Episode 1 was an excellent Star Trek episode. Moral and ethical dilemma.
The Orville is a good show.
"I´m gonna focus more on The Orville rathr than NuTrek" --> Good choice. I have given up on my old favorite franchise.
Never watched Star Trek before but Discovery has to be more salvageable than NuWho is
Yep, sadly Star Trek is no more. I will enjoy old Trek pre 2003 and new Trek aka The Orville!
Fantastic that you have finally given up on Star Trek :D The Orville is so much more like pre-2006 Star Trek
Orville literally promotes gay marriage, gender altering surgery of infants, and atheism.
@@tomcruisenukedmyaccount5388
Hey, RUclips have decided that your comment is a persona non grata. So it isn't being displayed. But I agree, it always was woke, and it's getting worse.
@@theoriginaldylangreene I agree. RUclips hates political debating in comments now. I see this happen to many comments I get.
@@tomcruisenukedmyaccount5388 As expected from Seth MacFarlane.
I think it’s clear by now Isaac does feel emotions stuff like understanding are emotions it’s just he processes them through a perception of logic.
I have always felt the Orville was a lot like Voyager but with better effects and more comedy
It's not as funny, but its really well written and I'm enjoying it quite a bit.
Ep 2 had a decent joke, but I also think that the show is doing better without as much comedy as before
I first noticed The Orville on Hulu about 2 weeks ago and saw it was a Seth MacFarlane thing. Hesitant to watch, thinking it would be an A Million Way to Die in the West slapstick nonsense. But gave it a shot, ended up binge watching the entire 1st season. Then found out its already 5 years old and baffled me. Surprised I hadn't ever heard of it before. Definitely not the Family Guy/vulgar/Die in the West
MacFarlane style I expected.
I am glad I don't have sosphicated mind like yours because I can enjoyed all the episodes in Strange New Worlds and replay it all over and over again
And thank you for show me what kind of person you are , I don't watch all the show that you comment it so I don't it's truth or not but I watch Strange New Worlds and I loved it , I guess I gonna stop clicking your video then
The eulogy delivered by Captain Mercer was excellent and provided a poignant insight into the character of Issac and the crew members.
I love The Orville, the real Star Trek in my eyes.
The first three episode were all pretty great so far. Especially episode 1. I was not expecting it to be so heavy at the get go.
"Out Star Trekking Star Trek right now" - you are bang on my friend. Great review, thanks!
(Pike needs some work though, and a couple characters disappeared.)
The trans character is a well written and entertaining villain (and a real trans) while Orville basically promotes gay marriage and promoted gender altering surgery of infants through very thin metaphor.
This isn’t a review. It’s a summery with some comments.
The Orville is great
I decided to watch the Orville after your review.
I vote for more The Orville reviews. If Star Trek produces something noteworthy, I'm sure you'll let us know.
Looking forward to seeing this. The Isaac issue was something they needed to deal with quickly, I'm glad they did.
JP from Talking the Orville does a great job with this show. Check out his channel. The show runners have given him great access. He has cast interviews and was invited to the premier.
Orville is the best!
For me, Isaac will always be 'Mr. Potato-head'.
A scenario that, once seen, can never be unseen.
I don't know for sure but some people that work on The Orville also worked on Cosmos documentary series.
WTF, Seth! If ever there was an episode that needed a little comic relief, it was this one.
Thanks Dave
SNW has likable characters, TOS like humor (which works) and pretty good plots. Unlike STD/Picard I find the woke moments mostly brief and easily ignored. The Orville is great, but watching most recent episodes of both shows coupla days ago, I enjoyed SNW most recent episode more than Orville.
SNW is awesome. (New Spock is metal, and Sybok is back.) It's pretty conservative friendly. Orville literally promotes gay marriage, gender altering surgery of infants, and atheism.
Same for me. Also the difference in acting quality is substantially in favour of SNW
(Nimoy is kind of a mystical wise man and friendly uncle in most of the movies.)
I like how he is more modernist than other Vulcans like in the OS.
Just saw the third episode of Orville (not going to spoil it) I liked it. It reminds me of the pilot of the original series The Cage.
I ran to watch this review! I am at awe at this new season of the Orville, so good!!!
I love the Orville and it's just sad that its out trekking Star Trek.
Would have liked it if the kaylon fight had the improvements Isaac suggested be helpful in the fight.
It would help the lady change her mind about healing Isaac.
McFarlane looks surgically enhanced
Fair point
Just rewatched Orville season 1 and 2 enjoyed it more this time around.
Shits all over anything star trek these days.
Really loving the new episodes. Hulu must've thrown a bunch of money at this show.
I really like strange new worlds.
Notice how Commander Grayson is standing in front of Captain Mercer. Hollywood feminist nonsense as usual but I do like the show.
The Orville is to Star Trek what Indiana Jones was to James Bond.
Totally agree with your decision to not give anything with identity politics any attention, just ignore it and don't give 'them'; the attention they are seeking.
As he just endorses the wokest season of The Orville. Yeah, Dave really ignored the identity politics in this season 3 opener....oh, wait a second. He did the exact opposite. Whoops.
