    Lovely job, nicely done with an attention to detail and an emphasis on cleanliness. Just one thing. Balance of the drive shaft. It needs setting up so that the CV joints front and rear are matching, otherwise it's out of balance and you will feel vibration. When you remove the final drive you can mark the disc, say at 12 o'clock with tape etc, then mark the drive unit to match the disc, then put it back together that way. Of course that depends on not turning the drive shaft. There are videos( one by Chris Harris I think) covering prop shaft balance. I hope your videos inspire people to have a go at this! Gareth Jones ( I'm on my wife's account here) Regards.....oh, no loctite....don't use it, saves torching the bearings the next time around. I don't think BMW do it any more either.

      Your so right about dealers Allen, I have seen a lot of terrible work from them. Just last summer my mate his Kawa Vulcan 1988, broke down in spain and an official Kawa dealer ripped him off, knowing that when my mate realised it he was already to far gone, on his way home, to go back.. I just couldn,t live with myself knowing to do such a whillingly terrible job..

    Some versions have the coupling of the spline shaft with the engagement key, others don't have the key and I think the bike in the video doesn't have it. It is therefore important to put the entire cardan shaft in the right phase. You don't mention this thing in the video, if you haven't done so I suggest you disassemble the final drive and check the correct alignment of the two yoke joints of the cardan, the one on the gearbox side and the one on the final drive side.
    it is important that the cardan shaft is in phase, otherwise the yoke joint bearings will be damaged in a short time and the bindings may even break completely with high risks for the safety of the driver and others. In addition to this, a shaft that is not in phase continuously stresses the rubber coupling of the cardan in a pulsating way and destroys it
    Ciao ;)

      Yep, this is how its in the service manual: The universal joints for universal shaft and rear
      wheel drive must be installed in the same direction. Thanks for pointing this out !👍👊

    Good job. I dont own a BMW but i am thinking about it. What was the cost of the consumables aporx. and w/e you changed for this problem? I am between the Vstrom and the 1150 Gs but the "cost of maintenance" is a thing for me if i had to take it to a mechanic to do the service. I am handy and backyard mechanic but this seems to need something more.

    Do the bearings need greasing, do they get oiled by the final drive or are they seperated from the oil?

    • @TheOldMechanic
      @TheOldMechanic  7 месяцев назад +1

      The bearings that i renewed are running in the oil, so no need for grease 😉👊🏻👍🏻

    Triumph 24,000 mile service £900. Do you stick these charges in the bank drawing interest learn to do basic servicing yourself. Use the money towards your next bike. I think buying a well looked after Japanese 15 year old bike with one owner under 20,000 is your Goldilocks area £2000-£3000.

  • @allanhughes7859

    Can you just imagine a main dealer doing this ? Well NO you can not because they do not!! They, in my humble opinion ,are a total waste of time and most important MONEY !! After 50 years of riding bikes I have not found one main dealer that does the work as it should be done I would go as far as saying they are idiots and don't give a shit as long as they get your money !! The car world was like this many years ago but due to competition it has now changed a "little" NOT A LOT !!!!!! Even if they do get it right the cost is a joke yes a joke 20K service on a Triumph £950 yes £950 on this you tube thing!! I bought my last bike for £850 and ran it for 4 years and then sold it for £650 without spending a penny /dollar !!! Think bike and double the price its that simple is it not ???? Anyway watch this chap and save a fucking fortune if you have a bema like I do!! OLD MECHANIC WHO IS NOT THAT OLD KEEP GOING FELLA COS YOU ARE SAVING US MERE MORTALS A FORTUNE !! AND IF EVER YOU ARE IN THE UK /WALES GIVE ME A SHOUT BECAUSE YOU WILL GET A FREE ROOM FOR A FEW NIGHTS
    Last comment to prove my point Honda vfr 400 always serviced at main dealers off side front spark plug never changed in 10 years let me say no more ! Just because the rad needs to be removed /moved !!!!!!!!!!
