Around my corner of the world we have a lot of billionaire car collectors that hide their cars away in collections that rarely see the light of day. Never driven on the roads or seen by the public. I have always respected Jays commitment to actually preserving and driving everything he owns with an enfasis on sharing and showing his knowledge and love for the 'humble' car. :)
Part of the "art" in these cars is the actual driving. It'd be like if these billionaires bought a painting, then just put them in a box away somewhere. You put the painting out to look and admire at. A beautiful vintage car is a marvel of engineering. The look of the car is a part of the art, the other part is how it drives. Sad not many people get that.
I guess that would depend a lot on the price of Trakker's car. My car cost $350. Don't know how that compares to the price of a vanos unit, but apparently the exhaust cost over 114 times the cost of my car. :D
i've payed 300€ for a vanos replacement and some valvecoverseal and sparkplugreplacement on my m52b25 engine. it's just a straight 6, with only one vanos unit, but yeah, you see it's not that crazyexpensive.
Bmw used to make some of the best motors in the world! over 600hp from a naturally aspirated engine designed 25 years ago... just amazing. look at the build quality!
+chejlr Not to the level that they used to. The first S motors were completely bespoke, practically race engines, built with incredible quality and durability. The new ones are just modified versions of the same motors that come in the regular cars. The last true S engine was the S65 and now it is gone. To clarify, you can still do this kind of build with turbocharging, they just choose not to because its easier just to tweak it slightly and get an extra 100hp.
+Eddie Mctopkek I would think because McLaren was pretty small at that time and it was probably just easier to have a company make an engine for them, very similar to what Lotus does but this engine was bespoke for the F1 unlike the Lotus engines which are very close to engines used in production Toyota Camry's and Corolla's
+Eddie Mctopkek +matt close For the same reason Pagani uses Mercedes engines. It is easy to get a lot of power out of an engine, see american small blocks that make 700-2000HP for 15 grand. But to make an engine with this powerlevel, this durability and this lightweight takes a lot of engineering work. Which isnt cheap and cant just be done in a year of development. So McLaren who almost throughout their whole history used engines from other manufacturers (cosworth, peugeot, honda, mercedes, honda...) took the "cheap", fast and safe option and purchased the incredibly good engine from BMW.
This is hands down the most impressive car video ive ever seen. This is will probably be the only video ever put up on you tube of a mclaren f1 engine while being serviced. That engine is a work of engineering art!
I know that it's been awhile since this was filmed but I'd like to say "Thanks J!" Viewing that motor outside of the engine bay, is one of those things most gearheads could only dream of!
I've seen and heard almost every supercar. I've seen Jay Leno around town many times. I've been inside a Mclaren SLR, MP4 and up close to the P1. But to this day I have never seen my favorite car of all time the Mclaren F1 in person. :(
Two reasons personally as far as cars go that I would want to visit that garage. Is your Shogun and to see this thing being reassembled after a full maintenance. Favorite car of all time.
lol Don't worry, I've done it three times and it's not so bad. Buy yourself a magnetic 10mm 1/4 inch drive socket for the job. It really helps. Good luck!
+daniel55645 When you've done it long enough it just gets to the point where a car is a car. Whether it's $1000 or $1,000,000 it's still just nuts and bolts.
Nicolas Hoyt That's true, and obviously I would know the guy knew what he was doing, But when it's that expensive, rare, and old I would still be nervous if it was my car.
+daniel55645 Jay doesn't have to worry about hurting the value of his car. He is famous enough that his will be worth extra because it was his. People could say "see that scratch, Jay Leno did that when he was working on the engine himself."
+Plur307 Its not about the resale value of something like a Mclaren its about the car being a piece of art. Do you think Da Vinci's Mona Lisa would be worth more just because some famous person damaged it?
+Josh Haynes james coburn ferrari california sold above market value because of his connection. Chris Evans the Purchaser at the time, then sold it at a huge loss.
Thank you Jay. You are so generous to do these videos. It's been said before, but so many of these precious cars are covered and locked up somewhere never to be seen until some collector passes away and the car goes to auction. You actually DRIVE yours. Awesome.
Love your channel Mr Leno. You are my hero for so many reasons. Would love to see more videos like this. Turning wrenches getting dirty. I feel it brings the connection between car and human so much closer. From the outside someone can look at a car and say wow that's nice. But to see the internal workings of all the special vehicles for many is a once in a lifetime moment! Thank you sir
man that engine is a work of art. you could get away with having that on display in your living room. light too. it seems cheaper in the long run to get your own garage, thats for sure J. thanks for sharing. who else would of thought of sharing such a beast with us. you rock. peace.
+Bo Huggabee All Im saying is you could easily make enough power to surpass the Bugatti Veyron's top speed if you did own one of these cars. Blasphemy is not upping output with a turbo or multiple turbos, blasphemy is allowing a car that weighs 1888 kilograms to outrun your McLaren F1 in a straight line. Thats all Im saying.
Yes BMW is a fantastic car. But lets not forget that your talking about two totally different animals and one has to look pass the quick splash of a car and its achievements and when you do you come come to see what im talking about. The Bugatti is a technical marvel of ingenuity that does what it does and it will no dout do it all day after day on the street without over heating or giving up its place in the front of a line of cars that get into this magical lineup of cars that in there own right has a good reason for being there. Im not saying its better or the best im saying your comparing apples to oranges in a world of diversity and craftsman ship. For myself I like them all. My final word my friend just speaking for me is if I had the money I would have a hard time deciding which super car I would buy.
Awesome. Love it that Jay will sare all the mechanics of my personal favorite and one of the most iconic cars ever built. Hats off to you Jay for saring with everyone. Only true gear heads will appreciate this video.
This all but a surreal experience watching you, Jay, examine the internal components of what had represented a quantum leap in automotive history. Despite being almost 20 years old, the mclaren F1 continues to hold a special place in car lore. An exercise in automotive design and engineering ingenuity, this video only reinforces that the mclaren f1, when new, was a car very much ahead of it's time.
Boredoutofmywits Legal problem McLaren have law changed to make it possible. In many country there is no option to do so. And many small manufactors doesn't want to play at court.
Hercules Rockefeller Matra Bagheera is an option to look at, though not center steer. As for cost, they've always been pretty cheap. I almost bought one but the 1250 engine was a hard sell. Land rover were originally going to be centre steer, but it made everything more difficult for the driver, easy enough to make, but impractical. The idea was simple, put the controls in the middle and not worry about left or right hand drive options and save on tooling costs. The F1 uses it as a gimic, apparently it was for weight distribution ... putting the battery under the passenger seat wasn't an option?
Look at the size of that power plant! What a huge engine. It's no wonder that car is so fast. A monstrosity of an engine with 627 horsepower in a car that weighs less than a Miata. Thanks Jay for posting this. It's very rare for most F1 owners to 'share' their car with the public like you do. Most owners are quite private with their F1's...which is fine. But Jay gives the average guy who loves the F1 a real world chance to have a closer look at it. Good on ya Jay!
Thank you Jay, as always. Best channel on RUclips for sure. Should I ever come to Cali for a longer period, you can feature my Peugeot 205 GTi 1.9. if you like :p
I came for the engine but mostly noticed the 1963 Ford Fairlane in the background! My first car that I still own is a 63' Fairlane Sport Coupe so it was really cool seeing one in Jay's Garage
Thanks for sharing the vid, Jay! I always enjoy seeing what makes different vehicles tick. Your F1 drive train assembly is especially a real piece of art.
Or one of those old style prophylactics that the navy first invented that was reusable and had a harness that went around your waist and clipped on, like the things that hold your socks up.
Rebuilt engine. It is no S70 from M8 prototype. That was 24 valves with 2 valves per cylinder. The engine only have name in common with BMW. Rest is custom job. Lighter and other stuff. At the time BMW doesn't put Vanos on the M3 or regular BMW.
Mietek1937 But he didn`t said it was the same engine from the M8, and the engine used in this video was developed and produced by BMWs Motorsport Division, so it is for all means, a pure BMW engine.
This is a BMW engine designed by BMW engineer Paul Rosche. The Vanos used here was from the E36 M3, and actually the S50B30 was used as a base to build this engine. The technology you see here was seen on following S engines and some of it is still used nowadays in BMW engines.
Wow all is all I can say thanks jay for taking the time and effort to put this video.together to show us little folks what that masterpiece of a engine looks like out of one of the finest automobiles in human history. If you need someone to wash your cars ill volunteer of course totally free of charge!
***** NEVER- 572 is Chevy monster engine and was never even thought of then-Old school really cant compare to VVT, etc. I remember when the 930 was just about the car to beat with top speed around 160-165 now those are about 200 mph
jim dandy - In case you didn't watch the video.. The engine @ 627 hp n/a with transmission weighs less than 500 pounds with the car lighter than a Miata. That is a staggering feat even by F1 standards. I take it you're not a mechanic or an engineer.
Jay, Thanks for the excellent clip on the McLaren F1 engine. It may be the best episode you've ever done! Wish we could see more stuff about engines like that. Thanks, Pete Carbone
I suspect you cant replace that with metal because it is squeezed back into place. It looks like real F1 race car fuel cells. They actually use talcum powder to help coax them in. A lot more goes into the construction of one of those things than you think too. For instance there are internal baffles to keep the the fuel pump from starving from g-forces Another benefit of that rubbery type construction is that it's safer in a crash.
Milesamanjaro No, the M70 is based off the M20 and the S73 in the 850csi is much the same concept with the 2 valves per cylinder and so forth. The F1 engine is based off the Euro S50B30 in the E36 M3 but with double vanos. Unlike the M70/S73 it has 4 valves per cylinder, solid lifters, and individual throttle bodies.
well no, that crank takes the torque and horses to push that car up to 240 mph. no other car or crank shaft could handle that for a road car in those days.
@T Y Truth is the engine is almost completely different to both the M70/S70 and the S50. The F1 has more in common with a VW Corrado (wing mirrors) than an M3.
Jay you're awesome for posting this. "Yeah just working on the McLaren...pain in the back best car ever lol". I had the McLaren F1 book 'Driving Ambition' and have been obsessed with this car since I was a kid. I am getting started in stand-up, I hope I get meet you someday and maybe go for a McLaren ride.
You are correct .. BMW used proven technology as they didnt have enough time to develop new components from scratch. Even the header flange castings are the same as an s50b32 :)
Your lucky brother, although I wouldn't trade my E46 coupe for even a 39 :P. Just playin', that beatiful beast is what I learned to parallel park with :D (and powerslide, drift, heel-toe, apex, scandinavian flick, backseat...activities LMAO etc.)
Alessandro ari zaluski .. ok but is not like McLaren just throw the engine from BMW inn.. after they receive the engine units they dismantle each block and replace many parts with lighter stronger titanium parts pushrods, camshafts, piston heads, rings, special coated cylinders, valves.. everything was tuned, calibrated and modify by McLaren specialists.. so the F1 has the best lightened V12 units.. F1 are epic.
Wow, Again simply awesome, this is most likely the only time I will ever be able to see that, thank you for sharing so much of your amazing cars with us, I always love the videos you make and how much I learn by watching them. Again thank you for your generousness with your time and knowledge.
Maybe he's like me and hates what BMW has become - they no longer make beautiful, durable reliable machines like the one in your profile picture, everything they make now is plastic trash that you can't even service yourself and is only good for the tip after 5 to 8 years.
whether its BMW or not, id of liked to put it into my kit car for the power alone, seeing as its similar in style but ill have to settle for the toyota engine for now....a bonus of that is it should be more reliable at least!
Does Jay not like BMW? He doesn't seem to own any BMW cars or showcase other peoples BMW cars classic or modern and in this video he didn't even mention that the engine was developed by BMW.
how could anyone give this a thumbs down?? to see a mclaren f1 motor out of the car is so cool. all the engineering that went into that engine and powertrain, it is a marvel to see all the individual components! leave it to jay to tear apart his f1! hope bernard can get it back it lol
Not if it was removed by Mclaren Certified Mechanics. I believe every 5 years or so the engine must be removed to be maintenanced. Im 100% that's the case with this video .
+Sam Scholdner Jay's no charlatan, he knows one end of a wrench from the other. He is also a smart guy and knows if you own a Rembrandt, you don't try to clean it yourself.
I have been a McLaren fan since the original McLaren Honda partnership when the F1 was still in a dusty drawing room, (actually there wouldn't have been any dust, Ron wouldn't have allowed it.) So I have to agree with you, the greatest road car ever made. For a company who didn't build road cars to produce the F1 will be looked back on as a landmark in automotive history.
Thank you for the reply. I agree, most of the materials in the F1 are widely used in supercars now, like the carbon fiber body, but man the F1 was SO ahead of it's time and even today it is the fastest naturally asperated car and is still way ahead of most current cars on the road today. I can't believe that a car that is 20 years old is still so competent against newer ones. And I love that the Mclaren F1 is so driver focused, I think that it is the best car ever made.
Jay, I can't believe no one questioned putting that drive train on that tool cart. That would scare me... At one point you hit it and the cart sways a few times. With that said, my favorite car you own! Luv ya Jay...
After you mentioned this i went back and looked and sure enough, at 1:07, when Jay patted the exhaust, it swayed!!. You are quite right, Adrian, why isnt this unit sitting on a factory support cart or at least a purpose-built one? On the other hand, it went back in OK so our concern is pointless. Still...
Thank you Jay for taking the time and showing us all of these things! And respect for doing so much yourself! Not alot of people with alot of wealth do so!
Jay, I don't care what anybody ever says about you, you are a straight up guy. The fact that you own one of these and would take the time to have it pulled apart in your own shop, want to look at it all up close and personal, and, better yet, want to share the experience with everyone else, makes you the Godfather of car guys! Thanks for the view. Made my day.
Around my corner of the world we have a lot of billionaire car collectors that hide their cars away in collections that rarely see the light of day.

Your passion for fine automobiles is a pleasure to watch. Plus , what is the deal with Ethanol ruining the tank?
Ethanol degrades the plastics, rubber, seals, etc. Probably dissolves the hydrocarbon molecules in it.
"thought you would enjoy what a McLaren F1 engine looks like"
Correct!
It was cool getting to see one outside the car. Great video!
that engine was the sexiest thing I've seen today
as odd as that sounds? yup....and I just saw jennifer lawrence in a skimpy bathing suit lol......
Well Ferrari V12's look even better to be honest.
If you like that check out the s85 bmw engine or s65 came in the e60 m5 and e46 m3.
Alfred Quijada :- You need to get out more!
i hope your wife doesn't see this comment.
Jay leno can save American top gear
Nothing can save American Top Gear, or America itself come to that
Wow. He's gotta have some of the best mechanics ever to take on a project like that.
is it just me or is jay leno friends with everyone on earth...never met the guy, already know we are friends XD
That vanos unit probably cost more than my entire car.
Probably not. It's probably the same Vanos unit that was used on a lot of BMWs. Vanos rattle is common on older BMWs.
I guess that would depend a lot on the price of Trakker's car.
My car cost $350.
Don't know how that compares to the price of a vanos unit, but apparently the exhaust cost over 114 times the cost of my car.
:D
All to make a V12 be quieter and sound a particular way.
i've payed 300€ for a vanos replacement and some valvecoverseal and sparkplugreplacement on my m52b25 engine. it's just a straight 6, with only one vanos unit, but yeah, you see it's not that crazyexpensive.
I bought my car for 120gbp and after almost 5 years I only changed oil and silencer :D

he was hearing the usual rattle noise from the vanos on a cold start up lmao
thats the single best episode of jay lenos garage. pure art that engine/car
Amazing machine, way ahead of it's time....
That's your best video ever mate. Such a special vision, for us to see. Thank you

I like the whole center drive thing..
.. is there a reason why more sports cars don't accept this design? besides cost?
All I know is that McLaren had to have the British Legislation of the time changed so the car could be street legal in that layout.
Boredoutofmywits Legal problem McLaren have law changed to make it possible. In many country there is no option to do so. And many small manufactors doesn't want to play at court.

Even mclaren f1 has VANOS problems XD. Fuckin vanos solenoids, just replaced mine and it's STILL stuck. If it's the cam ledge im fucked.
If you do throw your car away, let me know. I have some chickens that need a hen house.
that was awesome Jay its not every day you get to see a McLaren's f1 apart. thank you very much for sharing that.

What a privilege to be able to see this. Thanks for sharing!
best ever made car engine... by far
Nothing special just a normaly well produced street sportscar engine
What a magnificent car, the world speed record holder for 12 years. Thanks for sharing jay, keep it up.
620 HP very impressive for non turbo- 12 cylinder?
I think is still one of the most powerful N/A engines in the world.
DirtyDiesel100 Yes, considering the newest big block Chevy 572 ci engine barely makes that HP VERY impressive
+15 Seconds That's right - something like 556 brake horsepower per tonne.
Jay,
Thanks for the excellent clip on the McLaren F1 engine.
It may be the best episode you've ever done!
Wish we could see more stuff about engines like that.
Thanks,
Pete Carbone
Why not recreate that fuel cell in Aluminum or Ti so you don't have to worry about that plastic / rubber degradation?
Weight. Of course Ti would be lighter, but a one off tank? $$$
JWH91969 Not sure if $$$ even matters to Jay here...
Spam Can Safer. YES. Much, much, much safer. Given the speeds this machine can reach.
Thanks for sharing! Probably the only one we'll ever get to see on the net!
Basically it was built from two M3 engines with a common crank.
Regor Stubrewoz Nay, more related to the S70 from the 850CSi.
Milesamanjaro No, the M70 is based off the M20 and the S73 in the 850csi is much the same concept with the 2 valves per cylinder and so forth. The F1 engine is based off the Euro S50B30 in the E36 M3 but with double vanos. Unlike the M70/S73 it has 4 valves per cylinder, solid lifters, and individual throttle bodies.
windnsea03 It is. I agree.
well no, that crank takes the torque and horses to push that car up to 240 mph. no other car or crank shaft could handle that for a road car in those days.
So cool that you did a video on this!
the McLaren V12 is based on two S50B30 engines from E36 M3
it really isn't
alex mills but looks like two S50B30
Christian Salami Except it doesn't
nope
You are correct .. BMW used proven technology as they didnt have enough time to develop new components from scratch. Even the header flange castings are the same as an s50b32 :)
trust Leno to show something as rare as this.. along with a lot of people here, I've never seen that before, amazing.
Fuckin Vanos will fail from a 3 Series all the way up to a Mclaren F1...
Still wouldn`t trade my E39 for any of its competitors.
Wow! Thank you for sharing this. Fans of this car never get to see internal shots, outside of pictures taken on the production line.
BMW should build the same same engine for a m5 or m3
I won't pass emissions
this engine would cost more than the m5 or m3... m5 and m3 already make the same power as this engine but they are heavy and lumpy...
It would be extremely cool to install the S70/2 engine in lets say en E36/E46. However, only in a dream!
20 years ago bmw resigned from M8 with this V12
Alessandro ari zaluski .. ok but is not like McLaren just throw the engine from BMW inn.. after they receive the engine units they dismantle each block and replace many parts with lighter stronger titanium parts pushrods, camshafts, piston heads, rings, special coated cylinders, valves.. everything was tuned, calibrated and modify by McLaren specialists.. so the F1 has the best lightened V12 units.. F1 are epic.
100k views good stuff, people care about these exclusive vids, well done jay!!!!!!
LS swap when?
your swapping an iconic v12 for a v8???????
+Muammarvsgaming - LS swap ALL THE THINGS!
+Based Good one lol
if rather sacrifice my ability to reproduce than LS swap a McLaren F1
+Based God Why.
Wow, Again simply awesome, this is most likely the only time I will ever be able to see that, thank you for sharing so much of your amazing cars with us, I always love the videos you make and how much I learn by watching them. Again thank you for your generousness with your time and knowledge.
Jay must not like BMW. I have never heard him say "BMW" This engine is hand built by BMW M and he didn't even mention it. :-(
Maybe he's like me and hates what BMW has become - they no longer make beautiful, durable reliable machines like the one in your profile picture, everything they make now is plastic trash that you can't even service yourself and is only good for the tip after 5 to 8 years.
Well BMW makes great cars but they used to build planes for the Nazi's.
whether its BMW or not, id of liked to put it into my kit car for the power alone, seeing as its similar in style but ill have to settle for the toyota engine for now....a bonus of that is it should be more reliable at least!
Max Nelson they built engines, not planes
killerferret666 1uz conversion?
A Beautiful piece of aluminum, steel and carbon... So light and soooooooo Powerful ..!! Thanks Again Jay..!
Does Jay not like BMW? He doesn't seem to own any BMW cars or showcase other peoples BMW cars classic or modern and in this video he didn't even mention that the engine was developed by BMW.
Exactly he did not say anything about bmw !
BMW build that awesome engine
HarpreetKang16 even had bmw m3 vanos problems
Awesome video! Never seen an F1 engine like that before! Great stuff, please do keep them coming Jay!
I dont like bmw's. I find them a bit obnoxious and recently, ugly too. But they do make. In my opinion. The finest car engines in the world.
3.2 I6, 5.0 V10, and this glorious masterpiece.
turtlehater2 dont forget their 4 litre V8. But yeah this is the daddy
GAWD that was awesome. Thanks so much for sharing, Jay! Love the F1...
WAW, automotive porn. :)
how could anyone give this a thumbs down?? to see a mclaren f1 motor out of the car is so cool. all the engineering that went into that engine and powertrain, it is a marvel to see all the individual components! leave it to jay to tear apart his f1! hope bernard can get it back it lol
Removal = Out of warranty.
I guess no warranty after 25 years :-D
Not if it was removed by Mclaren Certified Mechanics. I believe every 5 years or so the engine must be removed to be maintenanced. Im 100% that's the case with this video .
I did enjoy that. Definitely well kept up like everything should be. Looks great. Nice job
Jay's trying to front like he took that engine out himself, GTFO
+Sam Scholdner Jay's no charlatan, he knows one end of a wrench from the other. He is also a smart guy and knows if you own a Rembrandt, you don't try to clean it yourself.
I like Jay but he's tryin to front, just callin shenanigans when I see it. But it is a Rembrandt. in my opinion the greatest road car ever made.
One of Jays best videos to date.
Thanks Jay. Always wondered what that motor looked like. Amazing and at 20 yrs old impressive to say the least.
Still...
Absolutely mind blowing! What a beautiful engine.
As always thanks for the great video Jay !
Just added this to my favorites list. So awesome.
Thanks Mr. Leno, don't think I would have gotten to see an F1 power plant without you doing this
Thank you Jay I did enjoy that , love that car and that manufacture pure perfection!
Thank you, Jay and your team! Keep up the awesome work
Thank you Jay for taking the time and showing us all of these things! And respect for doing so much yourself! Not alot of people with alot of wealth do so!
Kay Leno, you and your team are super heroes.
The S70/2 & S70/3 are probably the best BMW engines ever built but the final evolution P75 in the V12 LMR is from another planet.
Jay Leno really is the best.
i just love how he looks after his cars. everything in place, clean and nice. he truly is a definition of a real car guy
Phillip L. Mainly because he pays someone else to do it all for him.
when you got that many cars to maintain, you kinda have to....
J. L. and his garage...just the best ones.
Incredible Jay. Thank you so much for this look. Love your videos.
