I'm glad it's like this, because I sometimes skip to Leyndell early and sit at a grace without visiting Roundtree (which results in a softlock). Thankfully, I can close application immediately and end up at a save point just before I make the mistake lmao
How is it possible to lose more than a minutes worth of progress in these games? It literally auto saves every time you pick up an item, rest, defeat boss, traverse long enough, load in new area, and more.
I freaking hate it when games makes you go back through the start screen just to actually quit the game. And more so when it's the full start up like Dark Soul series does. How hard is it to make a separate "Quit to Title Screen" and "Close Game"?
Had it countless times across DS3 and ER and never lost any progress. The "inappropriate activity detected" popup was much more annoying, it sents you back to main menu randomly and disables online features.
This message shows up in every fromsoft game I can remember, at least since Bloodborne. I always just close application or turned off my system when it was on console and I got this. Nothing ever happened. I’m currently playing Elden Ring on PC, have a cache hierarchy error I think might be related to a faulty gpu, get this on crash all the time. Then it just pops me in wherever I left off, minus maybe a few minutes.
You will auto save whenever you rest at a site of grace. The game periodically autosaves. Just lookout for the logo on the top right corner of the screen and you will know whether it autosaves.
I've seen the popup for failing to quit the game correctly probably hundreds of times across every Fromsoft title combined and in not one of them was I even a step out of place, never mind missing any data when I loaded back in.
Sometimes I do my last run on a boss for the play session and don't feel like waiting for the loading screen so I can quit out, so I just turn off my console right there. Normally I wouldn't do this with games because I'm scared I'll lose progress, but I've never experienced that with Elden Ring.
I once farmed the blackflame monk armor for hours only for me to get it, equip it and the game to crash. Loaded back up with the armor gone. I said okay, fine, and I refarmed it and got it much quicker this time. I equip it, another crash. Gone again. Nearly lost it.

I closed the game without saving countless times on purpose and never lost anything, but the one time i really needed the auto-save to save the day it wasnt there.
Yeah, but Elden Ring, in fact... DOES auto-save. Frequently. On every fast-travel loading screen. And moment you die. and 'bonfire'. And NPC kill. And boss kill. And whenever you close the game properly. And every so often as you're playing. It autosaves CONSTANTLY. It's designed that way to prevent save-scumming. Like Soulsborne games always have been. You screw the pooch on a questline and, too bad, you have to wait till NG+ to try again. Your action has permanent consequences you have to live with. I don't understand what went so wrong with your copy you somehow lost 24 hours of progress because it WASN'T autosaving. I've rarely lost more than 24 SECONDS of progress. Souls games have been making this threat at me for years, yet I’ve never lost any progress after seeing it. Beginning to think this is more of Miyazaki’s psychological warfare.
Every time the game has crashed for me it’s been because of the buzzing glitch when doing something related to multiplayer (invading, being invaded, joining a host, being joined by a coop partner). Luckily the game auto saves before every multiplayer scenario so I only lose like three minutes or something. It was like a 10% chance except for when in the snow areas where for some reason it up to like a 60% chance. Fun game but damn it can be annoying.

I love putting my game into sleep mode, returning, having the game boot back to the start menu for the audacity of being disconnected, the get berrated for not quiting properly when it force me to, then having the game fail to connect 3 times while I try to reload my save.
Seriously though... Demon Souls Remake made it work, off and online, what the hell is Fromsoft's problem that I can't disconnect and reconnect ingame?
This happened to me in dark souls 3 because I was tired and forgot to quit out. I hit the playstation button to close the ds3 app and then shut down. It then corrupted all of my saves including the pyromancer I had used to get as far as the ringed city DLC. Very sad.
I've never lost any progress because of this message.
Im pretty good about quitting out but even when I forget I've never lost progress. I don't think my roommate ever quits out, and I don't think he's ever lost progress. I would have heard him bitching
You can close to desktop now at least
I really hate how that works
I was getting a bunch of stuff, game crashes, frickin stuff gone
I die to a boss and force quit out immediately
Game: "Don't worry, pal. I know I saved your butt there no need to thank me."
Today I've learned that Fromsoftware can create a great game, but becomes lazy enough when it comes to a "Quit to Desktop" button. Holy shit, this makes me sad.
Huh, I’ve never lost any progress and I always ctrl+alt+del out. Didn’t know issues were so common. I also never use any online features so that might play into it?
I literally lost over 300 hours of gameplay on my account. I didn’t even get to beat the game. Haven’t played since.
Game constantly auto saves, never had any lost progress with this or any of the previous games even when it crashed or was forcefully closed. Only issue I've ever had was with the cloud save, but that's on Steam's end
Why are there people acting like just because they didn’t lose progress, everyone else is exaggerating?
I for one dread quitting Elden Ring, because even up to Journey 4, I will still randomly get this message and come back to entire hours of progress deleted
How about you don't force us to re log to multiplayer servers to quit your game, From Software?
Frick you Fromsoft! On release I lost 6 hours of progress, since it was on release there were no guides on how the get weapon upgrades I had to reach Altus Plateu and kill that horse knight guarding Leyndell with a +2 weapon instead of my previous +6 (and I’m taking regular, not somber EZ mode).
Oh shit I thought I was the only one coz no1 would have a sister who would turn off the power every time U rage
I thought these games did have an autosave. Like... After everything you do it autosaves. I've only had progress lost once and it was because I rushed it and didn't let the save reach the cloud. These messages were always weird to me and have given me some weird crash anxiety since I crash often. But eh.
This is why you copy the save files after every boss, dungeon clear or every other hour.
Never lost any data in any of the souls games or elden ring.
I mean sometimes the game itself force close or not responding so it's player fault
I like this "problem" i can duplicate runes with my bro
Played over 400 hours on PS4 and never lost progress, so maybe it's a platform thing, I know PC still has issues.
Me disables auto save from cloud
Me thinking the game worn auto save when I made a fuk up
Game: lol you fuk up .. let’s save
Me: wtf!!
I got this, but I gained positive progress. Instead of siofra got to nokron lmao
fr, i literally just beat malenia and i turned off my xbox and lost like 7-8 hours of gameplay (now i have to beat her again)
But it autosaves like every few seconds
Interestingly, Dark Souls 2 let's you alt+f4 in the main menu without this bs.
I dont get this? You don’t have to quit from the pause menu for the game to save. It makes saves after exiting combat and grace sites.
I had to redo everything from Malekith to elden beast.... and radagon was not an easy one to redo
All gods will die
