@DrMecha The concept of two machines combining was in Mazinger with the Pilder. Regardless of the pilots. The pilots were just the reason as to why they could work at full power. If you see New Getter Robo Musashi was doing all three on his own. Even in Shin Getter Robo Sekai Saigo No Hi (Armaggedon). They were using the mechs without the other pilots.
I have to admit, Getta Robo Gou is the only series I haven't watched in full (though I have read the manga) and so don't have as much love for it as the other series but it still looks pretty cool. :)
@VegetaTheInsanity I've always considered Mazinger Z as the first Super robot but now that you mentioned it you're practically right. So I guess Daimos and Lazerion can be considered as combiners too, thanks for clearing this up.
@VegetaTheInsanity I'm not sure if I would be inclined that way, I would have to point out that the separate Getter Machines can all function and attack separately as jets. Not at full power, but certainly not helpless.. As for the developments in Shin Mazinger I think that it makes a good point that alot of technical details aren't really important in super robot shows. Especially at this point. I would have to say that for ideas sake Mazinger got there first but Getter definitely developed it.
@bdpickett It actually does since even TV tropes lists Mazinger Z as a sub category as a very basic form of combiners. Getter made it famous but even things like Astro Boy did it before Getter. Mazinger was made before Getter not the other way around so therefore it predates Getter in the basic sense of combining. It is two sepreate machines making a giant "functioning" robot.
i can only imagine how awesome this transformation is if the same network that did the live action adaptation of voltes v also do a live action remake of this transformation sequence
Getta Robo was the first combiner. 3 ships can combine to 3 different robots and from then on more versions of it came like Getta Robo G, Shin Getta Robo, Neo Getta Robo and more. Then other bots like Nadesco's Geki Ganger and Aquarion came. We can expect more of these mechas to come.

Getter is just adding an extension cord to it (the third machine to the mix). The Getter machines are not complete until combined. And as to Tetsujin it is a different concept (by a small margin) but similar to Mazinger as in Shin Mazinger Kouji's grandpa moved it with external controls but it doesn't follow on in the sense of combining mecha.
I do like Getter robo go and its alternates so much, i wish they used these designs for the second OVA instead of the more neutered Neo design, though that has grown on me I still prefer its predecessor.

LOL, that looks very safe, to bet all your chances on having to insert a cassette in a cassette-slot. Imagine when the robot is being rocked by, say, a couple of Nukes. Those gadgets would fly everywhere in the cockpit but the actual slot.
Glad they redesigned Getter 2 in the OVAs to make it look like a giant metal swashbuckler rather than an Aphrodite A's rip off. However, I prefer more Sho with Cutey Honey's hairdo from this anime over her other incarnations.

He was the first to make Combining Mecha popular and the first of the new generation of robots at the time (the Super Robots Which started with Mazinger Z as the first and the one who set the standards) to use more than one machine for any combination of mecha/machines.

The Pilder becoming the brain of Z is the same concept of combining mecha as two machines become one. Without the pilder Mazinger is useless as It and kouji himself are the literal brain of Mazinger and any other Mazinger.
@frostbite777 Dude, Getter Predates Voltron by a decade. It was the first combiner Super Robot. The original Getter came out in the 70's. Voltron came out in the 80's

懐かしいなぁ。プラモデルは出来が良かった気が。手首や角の差し替え以外はほぼ設定どおりの変形合体が再現されてましたなぁ。

中学校3年の時によく見てたなあ。一番驚いたのが、翔は女なのに、僕と自分で言ってたのが印象的だったのを覚えてます。ゲッターロボ號、翔、剴は超かっこ良かった。後半ぐらいでたしかパワーアップしてG鉱剣を使うようになってゲッターロボに剣は珍しいと思った。歴代のゲッターロボはトマホークだったのに。

一度エネルギーが無い（剣が生えてない）トマホーク状態で、ゲッター剴でトマホークブーメランやってました

残念だったのは、後半スーパーゲッターロボに成れるのが號だけだった事だよね。ゲッターは相手の能力や戦う場所で、三段階に変形合体するのが売りで、どの形態にも強みと弱点があるのがいい所だったのに、生かせなくなった。
