You've definitely had some excellent fortune to bring balisongs (especially metal ones) thru TSA without even getting pulled aside for questioning! Back when I still had a Squiddy-B, I brought it thru TSA probably ~10 odd times or so, and maybe a third of those times TSA asked me what it was. Thankfully, they always seemed to accept the answer "a fidget toy." But the first time I tried to bring my custom Flip Forge Edit thru security, TSA confiscated it on the basis of being "a replica of a prohibited item." Damn thing cost me about $100 too, so that really stung... The way I usually took my balis thru security was plopping them directly into the bin (so fully in the open) and in closed position instead of open. But after losing my Edit to TSA I decided I'd only ever try it again with a cheapo plastic bali that I don't mind losing. Glad to hear yours all made it through without issue though! And that New Zealand trip sounds amazing :D
I take a squiddy b clone and a glo-mod everywhere. On countless flights even to Japan and I've never been asked to even take them out of my bag. I need a metal one that would be easier to get on a plane. I'm thinking a bottle opener one like the mako or comb one (maybe disassembled) would be easiest to get onto a plane.

you could do more damage with a phone or a book or one of the seat belts or pretty much anything else. with balisongs its pretty much do you get a tsa agent who follows the rules strictly or one who follows logic
