Canada is not going to stop selling oil to the US, Doug Ford has no say in oil sales as Ontario doesn't have a drop of oil. Alberta already said that they won't but the tariffs will make it more expensive. The US desperately wants to keep the oil trading in US dollars... the only way they can do that is by buying it from Canada (because the US no longer has the reserves to keep the majority of oil transactions in US dollars). Trudeau recently announced a cap on oil production - hence Trump's animosity towards him and the threat of tariffs. Honestly, western Canada should just open the port in Churchill and sell the oil and all natural resources to Europe - bypass all this BS. Ship to Churchill by electric train. At Manitoba electricity prices - it would only cost $3500 in electricity for a train to travel 1900 km. Diesel and pipelines can't beat that. The US is literally fighting to maintain their title as the world superpower and they need Canada's resources to do it. Canada said no to natural resource raping and now we're witnessing Trump's tantrum. Canada needs to open up the arctic port to attract alternate trade partners and they need to start manufacturing products from their raw materials.

I'm a Canadian, and I actually live in the same province where Doug Ford is premier. I'm not a natural supporter of his. He's a conservative with a bit of a populist streak and it's just not my kind of politics. But on this issue, he's saying exactly what I feel. I've lived in the United States and have three close relatives that live in Florida and California. I like the country and want to have as close a relationship as possible. I don't want to get into a trade war with the Americans. Ultimately, we both pay higher prices on goods and it frames our relationship as an adversarial one. We've both been better off by cooperating.

I'm not a party person. I vote based on the most relevant issues of that time, the recent record of each party, who the leader is, and on who my local candidate is. I preferred Scheer and O'Toole's Conservative parties to Trudeau's Liberals, but would actually vote for Trudeau over Polievre next year (I'd pick Singh's NDP over both of them though).

Doug Ford is the leader of the Conservative government of Ontario so he can't say much about oil because most of the oil exports to the US come from Alberta and the leader of the Conservative government of Alberta, Danielle Smith, has said they have no intention of cutting oil exports to the US. Both Ford and Smith shouldn't really be saying anything about international trade because it is a Federal responsibility. Trudeau and Freeland, Trump's most recent targets sent the governing Liberal party into a spin over federal budget issues that included Freeland's belief that spending on goodies for the electorate to try to boost Trudeau's chances in a Federal election next year is a bad idea. Trump isn't a fan of either of them because both, Freeland in particular, were very tough negotiators during Trump's last term when he tried similar trade tactics. Anyway the point of this, for Americans, confusing little essay is that Canadians are very capable of creating our own turmoil, Trump is just a sideshow.
The US has a big part in that; while some drugs may enter through Canada; ultimately it is the US Border Patrol that is letting them through. We don't get searched on the way out, the US searches us on the way in to their country.

Canada is not going to stop selling oil to the US, Doug Ford has no say in oil sales as Ontario doesn't have a drop of oil. Alberta already said that they won't but the tariffs will make it more expensive. The US desperately wants to keep the oil trading in US dollars... the only way they can do that is by buying it from Canada (because the US no longer has the reserves to keep the majority of oil transactions in US dollars). Trudeau recently announced a cap on oil production - hence Trump's animosity towards him and the threat of tariffs.

I'm a Canadian, and I actually live in the same province where Doug Ford is premier. I'm not a natural supporter of his. He's a conservative with a bit of a populist streak and it's just not my kind of politics.
But on this issue, he's saying exactly what I feel. I've lived in the United States and have three close relatives that live in Florida and California. I like the country and want to have as close a relationship as possible. I don't want to get into a trade war with the Americans. Ultimately, we both pay higher prices on goods and it frames our relationship as an adversarial one. We've both been better off by cooperating.

I'm not a party person. I vote based on the most relevant issues of that time, the recent record of each party, who the leader is, and on who my local candidate is. I preferred Scheer and O'Toole's Conservative parties to Trudeau's Liberals, but would actually vote for Trudeau over Polievre next year (I'd pick Singh's NDP over both of them though).

Doug Ford is the leader of the Conservative government of Ontario so he can't say much about oil because most of the oil exports to the US come from Alberta and the leader of the Conservative government of Alberta, Danielle Smith, has said they have no intention of cutting oil exports to the US. Both Ford and Smith shouldn't really be saying anything about international trade because it is a Federal responsibility. Trudeau and Freeland, Trump's most recent targets sent the governing Liberal party into a spin over federal budget issues that included Freeland's belief that spending on goodies for the electorate to try to boost Trudeau's chances in a Federal election next year is a bad idea. Trump isn't a fan of either of them because both, Freeland in particular, were very tough negotiators during Trump's last term when he tried similar trade tactics.
Anyway the point of this, for Americans, confusing little essay is that Canadians are very capable of creating our own turmoil, Trump is just a sideshow.
